Remember when we all heard our first Smile music?

That was awesome!

Yup. "Fire" was everything I'd imagined... "Worms" was seriously wierd sh*t... and "Can't Wait Too Long" (I know not Smile but back then, who knew ?) just knocked me flat on my ass.

Wonderful was the first one for me.  Who writes melodies and chord changes like that...in 1966?  1966!  You kiddin' me?

'Wonderful' is the closest thing we have to Beethoven in this day and age, imo. That song blows me away every time I listen to it. Chord-wise, I don't think that anything has been recorded like it since.

of Montreal is the only band who has been close to match that type of chord progression. Or well, actually I gotta give it to them, they did match it!

I agree, of Montreal songwriter Kevin Barnes is very under-rated. Every song has a very unique and experimental chord progression, but I don't think anything beats Wonderful. How many key changes does it have? Three? Four? And the bassline is so smooth most people probably don't hear the key changes.
I remember when I first heard it on BWPS. That was the first Smile song I fell in love with. I was 17 or something, trying to learn it on the piano by ear. Failed miserably, which made me like it even more.

I know what you mean regarding Wonderful, it is pretty much perfect. oM songs that sticks to mind with loads of cool and interesting chord changes, on the level with Wonderful would be: "Isn't it Nice" and "An Ode to the Nocturnal Muse", but of course so many songs on "The Gay Parade" and "Coquelicot", too! Seriously, fans of SMiLE need to open their ears and listen to these albums.

WTF, "Isn't It Nice" and "An Ode To The Nocturnal Muse" are two of the songs I was thinking of! And they have like 300 songs. Do I know you?  Smiley "Frozen Island" is another one (listening to atm).
I think Brian was more sophisticated and used more inverted and complex chords. Kevin Barnes is more into key changes with pretty regular chords (not inverted). Just changing the mood constantly, very unpredictably. He does it extraordinarily well. I'm not sure he could've composed "Wonderful" though.

Haha! Wow, that is pretty amazing, uncanny I would say! Frozen Island is awesome too. You my friend, have excellent taste in music!
I know what you mean, mostly Kevin's chords themselves aren't that complex, but you're right, the amount of changes, and the shifting moods (and also his amazing melody lines at times) - fantastic!

PS! I do think he has 9th in there on Isn't it Nice, though Wink

No, belay that thought - the utterly best pre-CD moment was when, in the mid 80s, I turned up at a friend's house high in the thin, cold air at the exact same time as a shipment of Smile and Smiley Smile sessions on cassette, The stack was easily two feet high, the quality was stellar and there was stuff neither of us had heard before (e.g. first time I heard the "cantina" sequence). We sat there for maybe three hours, mouths open, until we looked at each other and said "can't take any more", so we went out for a drive and a meal, came back and listened to the rest , which included stereo SS stuff ("Fall Breaks..." in stereo is badass !) and more Smile. Amazing day, and had I been there 48 hours earlier, would have missed it.

Andrew, would that house "high in the thin, cold air" have been a "mile high," as they say???   Wink

Lee

Slightly higher, actually.

Does anyone here know, yet, if The Smile Sessions CDs will have the classic Capitol orange and yellow swirl?

I certainly hope so!

... I'll be really disappointed if they don't take the time to track down random acetates ... I would hope that a concerted effort is made on the part of Capital to ensure that anything that can be collected is ... If it was up to me I'd try and track down every single last person who ever had access to the tapes ... there's always the possibility that the second movement of Surf's Up is just sitting in someone's attic. If that was the case it would be really tragic if the compilers of this project didn't do their due diligence and follow up on any and every lead.

What changed with you? You used to want Capitol to be diligent about hunting down every last piece. Now that they're being diligent you seem upset.

That's what happens when you...

1 - change your handle from Fishmonk to Sgt. Smile and...

2 - hang out with Phil Cohen too much.

Actually, I thought that they would go with the Brother Records label, at least for Disc 1. Especially after the way Mojo presented the Cabinessence/Wonderful 45.

Are they even doing that though? It seemed to me like the announcement back in march was made in hopes of scaring up some new material. We did get a post here asking about the tape library picture, and that likely represented the last scrapping of the bottom of the barrel. I would hope at this point that archival work was done. If they're still in that stage of production this is likely never coming out.

Not that you'll believe a word I say, but "that stage of production" ended months ago. Acetates were found and auditioned: if any were used, we'll know when the box comes out. Which it will, later this year.

Sure Phil, destroy over 35 years of researching and building sources, reduce any standing and reputation I may have in the BB fan world to nothing and compromise the position of anyone who may have provided me with any such information just to satisfy your curiosity. I cannot believe you said that. I've had more intelligent requests from a fern. I've had dealings with some complete fools in my time, BB-related and otherwise, but you, sir, are without doubt the most brainless individual I've had the misfortune to encounter.

Andrew can you please create an account for your fern on this board? It may very well have more intelligent things to post than Phil.

Leave me out of this -- you're all crazy.

For the record, some of the things I've requested from Andrew include water and sunlight.

This idea was a lot funnier yesterday, honestly.
