I hope the chap lost his job after betraying his employers in such a manner.

Please take note; bolded, italicized, underlined, striked-through, glowed, shadowed, and marquee'd -

I guess my best pre-CD experience was getting into contact with someone who was then working for BRI and who took advantage of the band being out of town over an Independence Day weekend to copy everything he could lay hands on to high quality cassette.

The full tale will be included in my forthcoming autobiography, It Will Be Nice Because I Damn Well Tell You So.

But concisely - not exactly.

Remember when we all heard our first Smile music?

That was awesome!

Yup. "Fire" was everything I'd imagined... "Worms" was seriously wierd sh*t... and "Can't Wait Too Long" (I know not Smile but back then, who knew ?) just knocked me flat on my ass.

Wonderful was the first one for me.  Who writes melodies and chord changes like that...in 1966?  1966!  You kiddin' me?

'Wonderful' is the closest thing we have to Beethoven in this day and age, imo. That song blows me away every time I listen to it. Chord-wise, I don't think that anything has been recorded like it since.

of Montreal is the only band who has been close to match that type of chord progression. Or well, actually I gotta give it to them, they did match it!

The "All I Wanna Do" thread inspired me to listen to Sunflower/Surf's Up upmixed to 5.1 for the first time, and man am I glad. As it ended with "Surf's Up" featuring the Beach Boys voices swirling around, I was reminded of how great this box is going to be.

The clarity that we'll get in sound is just ridiculously exciting. Add to that all the info we're bound to get and the bonus of it being talked about in the press so we don't all sound as crazy to non-fanatics as we probably seem, and it's gonna be one of the highlights of this year (or, to avoid issues, any year in which it's released). And if we're lucky enough to get some pieces we've never hear before?? Well ... I believe I'm getting the vapors ...

I'm only aware of a few 5.1 song mixes for that material.

I wouldn't take it as gospel, not until we see an announcement from Cap itself, rather than a date which reportedly comes from Capitol.

The reporter might have seen something on the web and assumed it's come from Capitol. Wouldn't be surprised.

I found Mike's comments more interesting than the alleged date (which probably came from the website previously cited): his reported idea of a 2012 BB album could be good. Add a couple of Dennis & Carl archive tracks, it gets my vote.

I find this quote by Mike to be interesting also:

"Some of the lyrics weren't my cup of tea. The music is brilliant, the vocals and the tracks. Cousin Brian is at his height singing-wise. There's a lot of good things about it — just some of the lyrics were a little bit obtuse, a little bit oblique. You can't figure out what they're talking about," Love said with a laugh. "That's my point of view and I'm sticking to it!"

All cred to Mike for sticking to his original (well, oft-reported) line and not attempting to re-write history.

Even if it was as bad as some fear, it would still be great; like having a recording of your beloved old grandpas in the full glory of their beloved ol' grandpainess.

Apparently there is not going to be a tracklist on the box set for the whole thing or on the individual CDs, just the words "Play CD for correct sequence" on each disc.

I agree, of Montreal songwriter Kevin Barnes is very under-rated. Every song has a very unique and experimental chord progression, but I don't think anything beats Wonderful. How many key changes does it have? Three? Four? And the bassline is so smooth most people probably don't hear the key changes.
I remember when I first heard it on BWPS. That was the first Smile song I fell in love with. I was 17 or something, trying to learn it on the piano by ear. Failed miserably, which made me like it even more.

No, belay that thought - the utterly best pre-CD moment was when, in the mid 80s, I turned up at a friend's house high in the thin, cold air at the exact same time as a shipment of Smile and Smiley Smile sessions on cassette, The stack was easily two feet high, the quality was stellar and there was stuff neither of us had heard before (e.g. first time I heard the "cantina" sequence). We sat there for maybe three hours, mouths open, until we looked at each other and said "can't take any more", so we went out for a drive and a meal, came back and listened to the rest , which included stereo SS stuff ("Fall Breaks..." in stereo is badass !) and more Smile. Amazing day, and had I been there 48 hours earlier, would have missed it.

Andrew, would that house "high in the thin, cold air" have been a "mile high," as they say???   Wink

I know what you mean regarding Wonderful, it is pretty much perfect. oM songs that sticks to mind with loads of cool and interesting chord changes, on the level with Wonderful would be: "Isn't it Nice" and "An Ode to the Nocturnal Muse", but of course so many songs on "The Gay Parade" and "Coquelicot", too! Seriously, fans of SMiLE need to open their ears and listen to these albums.

WTF, "Isn't It Nice" and "An Ode To The Nocturnal Muse" are two of the songs I was thinking of! And they have like 300 songs. Do I know you?  Smiley "Frozen Island" is another one (listening to atm).
I think Brian was more sophisticated and used more inverted and complex chords. Kevin Barnes is more into key changes with pretty regular chords (not inverted). Just changing the mood constantly, very unpredictably. He does it extraordinarily well. I'm not sure he could've composed "Wonderful" though.
