So... what was this thread about again?

How AGD is the Obama of SS.net

A suggestion: got sit in the corner with your master - on his lap, I'm guessing, as lapdogs do -  and tell each other how horrible and nasty everyone else is, and that no-one really understands. And the rest of us in the real world will get on with whatever it is we want to do, unmolested by the prophets of doom. Everyone's happy. World peace, candy bars and that kind of thing.

You'll note that there's no discussion(or anguish going on) on the internet concerning Neil Young's "Archives Vol.2". It took ten years(and loads of pressure from Neil's fans, many of whom were turning against him) to finally extract "Archives Vol.1" from Neil. I think that most of Neil Young's fans would agree that it's not worth going through that 10 year ordeal to extract "Archives Vol. 2" from him. Will Reprise Records, Compact Discs, DVD's or Blu-Ray discs still exist in 10 years time? Your guess is as good as mine. My view is that Neil Young's fans were lucky that he let go of Vol.1

Yes, I had a role in the online complaining about the endless games that Neil played over "Archives Vol.1", and I was equally vocal in seeking remastered Beatles CD's. My complaints about the elusive "Smile" box are for the same reasons; to keep public pressure on artist & record label, who are not particularly eager to release the product. Contrary to Mr.Doe's view, I will not see the actual release of a "Smile" box set as a defeat. I will see it as a victory. We should all maintain public pressure on The Beach Boys and Capitol Records.

Phil, have you considered changing your screen name to Zelig??

It took me a week to read through this godforsaken thread.

It's kind of like the end of the movie "The Magic Christian".  Anyone know what I'm talking about?

people at this point are really just projecting onto Phil.
If Phil would back up his claims, people would lay off him.  Wink

....and, if Andrew Doe would back up the claim that he has connections to "inside information", by sharing that information with the public.

Sure Phil, destroy over 35 years of researching and building sources, reduce any standing and reputation I may have in the BB fan world to nothing and compromise the position of anyone who may have provided me with any such information just to satisfy your curiosity. I cannot believe you said that. I've had more intelligent responses from a fern. I've had dealings with some complete fools in my time, BB-related and otherwise, but you, sir, are without doubt the most brainless individual I've had the misfortune to encounter.

My curiosity? Actually the curiosity of all of the people who wanted to buy this box set.

Phil -

please subtract me from your 'all of the people'. I never asked AGD to make public any private information, and never will. Your remark is certainly not representative of me.

So, you don't want to know anything about the "Smile" box's contents, or why it hasn't been released? Your request has been granted....by Capitol Records.

When I first heard BWPS I honestly asked myself 'What the hell did I just buy?'....now I think SMiLE music is some of the best that I've heard. It grows on you methinks.

'Wonderful' is the closest thing we have to Beethoven in this day and age, imo. That song blows me away every time I listen to it. Chord-wise, I don't think that anything has been recorded like it since.

Not seen the movie for, oh, 30 years or more - all I recall is a huge vat of sh*t and people diving therein to a soundtrack of "Come And Get It". I'm guessing that's what you're referring to.  Smiley

In 1985 I embarked on a cross-city expedition in LA to track down some 'new' Smile tapes... which turned out to be something I'd traded to someone else entirely a year or so previously ! Still, got some Pepper sessions out of it, so not a complete waste. Otherwise, they just came my way. It was simple - someone gave you a tape and said "don't copy it". If you didn't, more came your way: if you did, the vault door closed. I guess my best pre-CD experience was getting into contact with someone who was then working for BRI and who took advantage of the band being out of town over an Independence Day weekend to copy everything he could lay hands on to high quality cassette - man, when I opened those packages and saw the titles on the labels, I had to sit down.

Man, that sounds like the glory days of beach boys fandom, I wish I could try to find tapes of rare material like that. The hunt for rare material  sounds like half the fun with trying to find tapes and bootleg vinyl like that.

No, belay that thought - the utterly best pre-CD moment was when, in the mid 80s, I turned up at a friend's house high in the thin, cold air at the exact same time as a shipment of Smile and Smiley Smile sessions on cassette, The stack was easily two feet high, the quality was stellar and there was stuff neither of us had heard before (e.g. first time I heard the "cantina" sequence). We sat there for maybe three hours, mouths open, until we looked at each other and said "can't take any more", so we went out for a drive and a meal, came back and listened to the rest , which included stereo SS stuff ("Fall Breaks..." in stereo is badass !) and more Smile. Amazing day, and had I been there 48 hours earlier, would have missed it.

Freaking unbelievable!
"War" has started again... so violent quotes, threats, liars... for what?
It was supposed to be a wonderful news, a giant event for all the 'fans', I don't to think what would happen
if some of you have guns, or about the whole mess behind the music store when it will be release.
Are you gonna start a fight to buy the limited box set?
I hope people who are fighting for human rights and peace all over the word will never read this thread.
Maybe it is time to rename Smile to Dumb Angel, it makes more sense and sounds more appropriate.

Remember when we all heard our first Smile music?

That was awesome!

To be quite honest, I found it less-than-mindblowing at first. My fandom was kind of waning around 1993, but then I heard Steve Dahl and Garry Meier on WLUP playing stuff from the Good Vibrations box, which had just been released...I remember they were cracking up over the titles "I Love To Say Da-Da" and "Do You Like Worms," and they played them, and I was very ho-hum about it...didn't do anything for me, unfinished fragments with a paucity of vocals. What DID blow my mind and permanently reignite my fandom: "God Only Knows" from disc 5. I remember Steve was particularly stunned. I bought the box set just for that.

Overall, there's nothing fascinating to me about the 1966-1967 Smile. Too fragmented, too incomplete, and in some cases, too dark and creepy. But as I heard more and more Smile music, some of dubious legality, it became fun as all hell to finally hear some of the missing pieces.

Having said that, I DID love the FINISHED pieces, or at least what sounded finished -- "Heroes And Villains" with the cantina section (I didn't get the Smiley Smile/Wild Honey twofer until after I got the GV box), "Wonderful," the "Surf's Up" demo, and "Vegetables." (At the time I actually preferred the Smiley Smile version of "Wind Chimes"; not any more though!) And I looooooooooooved the "Heroes And Villains" sections. But the rest of the newly-released Smile music and most of the boots just didn't do much for me....then again, I'm sure I wasn't alone in my screaming at the top of my lungs when, without any warning at all, I was listening to Endless Harmony and heard "look at me jump, I'm in the great shape of the..."

Really, Smile is not my favorite of the archival Beach Boys material; the Sunflower-era outtakes and the Party! sessions are my faves.

Having said all that:

1) I absolutely cannot get enough of BWPS. The finished music, the lyrics, the melodies...make all the difference in the world. The final product in 2004 is pure genius -- and I don't care if Darian did the whole effing thing, it's still nothing short of absolutely freakin' brilliant. And how all the songs connect and tell a story...and even the songs that sounded so dark in '66 and '67 now sound bright, positive, uplifting...sometimes I find myself thinking that it could be even better than Pet Sounds.

2) As soon as TSS is released, you better believe I'm heading straight to Best Buy or whatever indie place has the whole records-plus-CDs and paying whatever it costs!
