What's this "troll" bs?  Does Phil live under a bridge?   Someone speaks their opinion, whether a popular one or not, and they're a "troll"?

Actually, nobody seems to know what a troll is here, let me enlighten you:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Troll

Why this became a term on the message boards, beats me.

Why don't those who don't agree with Phil just ignore his posts? I know I do, and I'm very comfortable with it. All he wants is attention, and when he doesn't get any any more, he'll eventually stop posting. And this thread wouldn't be cluttered with discussions about Phil.

This isn't the "Does Phil suck or not?" message board.

Or is it?

OK, so that's maybe 47% of us here at one time or another, then.  Grin

Wise words, but Phil is an uber-troll - we tried that a few weeks back. True, he vanished for a while then, when everything was pretty much world peace and candy bars, boom, The Return Of Eeyore.  It's like having a very small and yappy dog worrying at your ankles: however much you try to ignore, the time comes when the urge to see how far you can punt it becomes overwhelming.  Grin

That said, he does troll under his own name.

Phil's posts have nothing to do with his Smile mix.  Really, they don't have anything to do with Smile.  If it was a different band and a different release it would all be the same.  That's Phil's gimmick.  He gets online and freaks out about classic rock outtakes.  It's what he does.

Ha ha! Somebody should get Phil into Neil Young, then he can direct all his energies towards the wait for Archives vol 2, set to contain perhaps the second greatest lost album ever ...

Well, I manage to ignore "The Return Of Eeyore" too. It's far less labor to scroll down just his posts to find relevant ones than to scroll down all that discussion about him in search for something worthwile. That's what bugs me.

Well, what I was trying to say was considering the true meaning of the word/creature, it baffles me how the internet definition came to life in the first place. Ya get me? Wink

Micha you are entirely right, and against my better judgement I've now contributed three posts on the subject of Phil Cohen.

Let's get back to Smile. My favourite moments are as follows:

Child verse: You know that moment where you come to the top of a hill and you suddenly encounter the most awesome stretch of landscape? That's what these verse chords do to me, almost every time. I imagine a sun drenched american plain, shimmering in the heat haze - like something from a Sergio Leone western.

Look: Evokes a similar feeling of arrival - passengers on a ship ecstatic at the first sighting of land. I've seen others post similar descriptions which always amazes me as there are obviously no lyrics to steer these associations. I love it that many of BW's greatest compositions, most notably God Only Knows, seems to have this natural, unforced, nautical feel.

Da da bird sounds - A jaunty walk through the forest. Try tacking windchimes on the end right after the ascending final notes. Perfect match!

Of course everybody gets different images to these instrumentals. Look makes me think of nesting birds, while the CIFOTM verses makes me think of some beaded hipsters strolling around the outskirts of LA in 1967.  Smiley

My favorite SMiLE moment? The instrumental version of the BR theme with the ascending bass. Makes me think of a chain gang.  Cheesy

Oh cool. It's just a train to me, but the chain gang has much more potential!

For the vegetables fade I see the Beach Boys in the row boat from earlier in the song (they're singing 'row, row row' over do a lot at some point, if memory serves?) but now they're in one of those dank underwater caverns, maybe crystals sparkling on the walls, like something out of scooby doo. I don't picture the band in any other moment but always see them at this point.

Look is by far my favorite track from SMiLE. It is very nautical in it's feel - also very haunting and baroque. When I try* to show people the genius of Brian Wilson I always put on Look.

I never really heard the term "Troll", until Charlie Sheen uttered it several times during one of his rants. Actually AGD uses the word quite a lot, and even has one of Mr Sheen's quotes as his signature, which is quite amusing.

1. Favourite part of Smile - the first verse of H&V - sums up the whole Smile shooting match for me at just 0:50 long

2. 2nd Favourite part of Smile - this board - in fact this thread and the people on it

3. Least favourite part of Smile - DaDa - just doesn't do it for me and seems out of place

4. Second least favourite part of Smile - those who give Phil a hard time just because he has a different view - as far as I can tell he's never be really rude to anyone - give the guy a break

Yes I know about  those kinds of troll's (I have a 4yo daughter that I read to Grin),

Wikipedia-----In Norse mythology, a troll is a generally negative synonym for jötunn. Later, in Scandinavian folklore, trolls became beings in their own right. In modern times trolls are depicted in a variety of media.

Part 1 of DaDa is my all-time favorite section of SMiLE. It has that same feel as the first couple of bars from Let's Go Away For A While.

It is fantastic. I only realised a couple of years ago that it is very close in melody to the wa-ha-la-lu-lei part of Worms. Raises the question of whether Brian designed it as an echo of that part, or (more likely) that by the time he was recording Dada he'd already ditched Worms (and possibly Smile in its entirety), and was just recycling parts.

There's also a boot with a version of dada where the musicians begin to move into a 3rd part which quickly breaks down. This 3rd section is very similar in feel to one of the child sessions. Dada's quite an intriguing track, all things considered, and really raises questions about Brian's plans for Smile at that point.

I was going to do that in this SMiLE medley I'm trying to put together -- mashup the wahala-lu-lei and wah-wah-hoo-wah with DaDa.

I've never heard that boot of Part 3.

If Bill Tobelman posted here saying that "SMiLE is about zen." - repeated this every two posts without giving evidence he would probably be banned. But he actually gives evidence and his thesis is quite intriguing...thus I really appreciate his posts.

Phil Cohen gets on here and says every three pages that the SMiLE Box Set project is "troubled"...he gives no evidence to back this claim, then when we ask for evidence he ignores our request and people come in droves defending his right for an opinion. yeah, that makes sense.
______

Da Da has become one of my favorites over time. (I really wonder where Brian got the musical inspiration from for Da Da). The drums are the best part of that song for me. I can't wait to hear a cleaned up version of it! Perhaps it will grow on you - it did for me.

I'm not really sure he does have a different view. The evidence against his banal statements is overwhelming but he sticks to it stubbornly. I suspect he's just too proud to admit that he might be wrong, and it's gone on so long now that he doesn't want to look a fool for backing down.  Instead, he opts to look a bigger fool for continuing.

You're right, it's his option and he's welcome to voice whatever daft theories he subscribes to. And it's our right to point out to him that he's making a banana of himself.
