Exactly, it's already been almost 40 years! what's a few months?

Actually, it's been almost 45 years since the album was supposed to come out...and I've been consciously waiting for about 35 of those years!

And Guns N Roses fans think they have it bad  Roll Eyes

I don't know much about assembling boxsets, I'm sure it takes a lot of hardwork, but I don't subscribe to this idea that just infinite time equals an infinitely good boxset. In the time Mark and Alan have been working on this the people of Libya fought and won a civil war....earthquakes destroyed Japan, the space shuttle completed it's final mission, democrats and republicans reached a debt agreement, Duke Nukem Forever was released. I hope that Mark and Alan are done with their share of the work by now.

Let's hope the boxset is a little better than Duke Nukem

Yeah, I hear Duke sucks, I didn't try it out yet, but the telegraph tells me so. Oh, let's also hope that the Smile Sessions are better than Chinese Democracy Wink

I actually love Chinese Democracy..  Grin

Most underrated album of the decade, in my humble opinion

I, myself, am hoping that Surf's Up part 2 is more interesting then the demo and 71' versions...

But how will we ever know, seeing as it doesn't exist ?

Maybe he's praying that Darian, savior of Smile, will come through with something.  Roll Eyes

Hey, Darian did what Brian needed help with, ASSEMBLING SMILE.
so... Technically...

And in the same amount of time you've posted the same dumbsh*t message in dozens of variations, all of them without any substance.  So yeah, you're proving that more time does not necessarily equate to better product.

Surf's Up, Part 2, is one of the Smile 'grails.'  Over the years, there have been third-hand reports from Domenic Priore, Alan Boyd et al. that  SU pt 2 might exist.  Considering all of the research and detective work that Alan, Mark and company have undoubtedly done over the past year, however, if the track doesn't surface in the Smile box, it likely never will, and, indeed, might not exist.   However, unless someone has already received word of exactly what never-before-heard material has or has not been found by Alan and Mark, I'm not sure it can be stated with any degree of confidence that SU pt 2 does not exist.

As much as I hate to say it, I also agree that it doesn't exist. If it is was found and put on the sessions, it alone would alone make the collectors box set worth buying for me. Of course there are a ton of other things that i am hoping (wishing) will be found and included but I try not to get my hopes up. Can we take a vote? Who thinks part 2 exists and will be included in the box set?

There's documentation that two tracking sessions were held for Surf's Up.  Brian did complete most (if not all) of the backing tracks for SMiLE and it would be pretty strange that he would leave an important song like Surf's Up instrumentally incomplete while going through numerous variations of H&V during the winter of '67.  I personally think the tracking session for part 2 took place but I don't expect it to be on the box.  I would love to be surprised.

The biggest question...if the session did take place how and why did the tape for it disappear between 1967 and 1971?  Was it taped over/destroyed by Brian?

I hope I'm not blowing up your silence, but I noticed that you did the web design for Van Dyke Parks's Bananastan site, and thought I'd mention in case anyone feels like doubting you. Which isn't to say that that's who told you ... just that it's a possibility.

No AFM sheet... no Capitol popular session sheet... no known tape log... CK has never mentioned it... not used for the 1971 cut'n'paste job... not surfaced in decades of archive trawling when a LOT of other stuff has. The sole assumption it exists at all is that there's an AFM sheet with "Surf's Up (pt.1)" on it.

From this board in 2007...

Here's something I copied from one of these message boards some time back:

Here's a post from Alan Boyd in response to a question about if
they ever found a tape of Surf's Up Pt. 2 in the vaults...

*******

I wish I could offer something a bit more concrete here...

I've heard about the existence of a tape of a full arrangement on that
second section of SURF'S UP. It's been described to me, third-hand.
Supposedly it's pretty weird, lots of strange horn and string parts.
But I haven't heard it.
http://smileysmile.net/board/index.php/topic,4165.25.html

And Domenic Priore mentioned similar rumors in his Smile book from a few years ago.

Thus, it seems that at least one unknown, unidentified figure out there in the universe of BB employees/collectors/fans has claimed that (1) the tape exists; (2) that he or she has heard it; and (3) it's pretty weird with lots of strange horn and string parts.  Granted, that's extremely flimsy evidence, as the source(s) could be lying or confused or both.   Nonetheless, the existence of such rumors (and the fact that they've have been heard and repeated by the likes of AB and DP) can't be totally ignored.

"Third hand" - someone told someone told someone who told Alan.

Alan I'd trust implicitly to relay exactly what he was told, which leaves two links in the chain that have to be regarded as at best, questionable. If it's in the box, I'm thrilled to be proven wrong. But, I doubt I will be.

I heard that in Surf's Up Pt. 2 there was a lot of super weird avantgarde stuff that caused those who listened to it to go insane, so the tapes had to be sent back in time to before insanity was invented.

Given that Mr. Priore claimed in his 2005 THE MAKING OF SMiLE that a complete never-before-released final mix of "Surf's Up" from Jan. '67 is sitting in the vaults, I'm sure we'll hear the whole recording as Brian originally envisioned it...unless Mr. Priore might be mistaken, right?

Actually I wouldn't call THAT "evidence" at all. And though it is very unlikely it ever existed and I don't believe it did, I still hope it will be on the TSS box.
