I emailed the author and this was the response.

The original SMiLE (I see you're a fan) is being released next year; with the Beach Boys and, what were they, Wrecking Crew recordings. Brian Wilson's version came out a few years ago, but this is the one that escaped the fire.

thanks for paying attention!

"That's what Brian told me. But I don't think he knows everything - he had no idea when the Disney album was being released, its October date was announced two days after I talked with him.

If you have other information I'd like to know, too."

Thanks for following up with the interviewer.  Until we hear otherwise from another source, I'm going to assume that November 1 is still the day.   Brian is a musical genius... and a nice guy, I'm sure... but, like the song says, I take his gospel whenever it's possible with a grain of salt.

Well, the board exploded with a mighty SMiLE as we fell into the sun,

Oh well, I'm with you guys, let's get this smile-boxset dreamer circle jerk going fullsteam.

I can't wait to buy this on November 1st! Oh golly gee wiz! We're so lucky!

Is anybody else here not at all concerned with the wait for a release date?  Sure it will be nice when it happens but I'm not in any hurry.  I'm really excited that the set will come out but there's plenty of music for me to listen to until then.  It's only logical that the longer this process takes, the better quality the end result will be.  I know it's coming and whenever it gets here I'm going to dig it.

As for Brian's "Mickey Mouse" album, and forthcoming Beach Boys reunion recordings, let's boycott them, and send Brian & The Beach Boys a message about the power of the consumer. They've milked the myth of "Smile" for too long, and played far too many games with the fans. On all the previous occasions (in the past four decades) when "Smile" was supposed to be released, and wasn't, fans soon forgave The Beach Boys, then it was business as usual for Brian Wilson and The Beach Boys, and their careers suffered little or no damage from Smile's non-release. Let's show this dysfunctional family of musicians that this time, their failure to come through with "Smile" will be absolutely unforgivable, and that we could, overnight, reduce these musicians to the "fallen idol" status of Peter Frampton, Donovan, Twisted Sister.

Y'know, the twerp had something here.

How about we all refuse to buy the box set until its release date (pre-orders aside, of course)?

Let's only buy stuff that they actually release – that will send a clear message to the band and its affiliates that we're fans.

Erm…

That's not necessarily true. I think the marginal improvement per manhour is low. The difference between hour 10,000 and hour 10,001 is probably insignificant. I would like to know what work is still going on. From what very little we've heard it seems Brian has twice now listened to the boxset, perhaps the first time was a preliminary goaround and the second was of the completed release. In any event I really don't think that the longer we have to wait the better it will be, there comes a time when it's just done, and any additional work is just needless fussing.

I'm pretty sure Phil has some serious mental issues. Not kidding - to get so worked up about something Brian said (allegedly) and then post the above, which is a complete 180 from a post in the now-merged thread where he states that Capitol take no notice of us* isn't the sign of a stable mind. I think banning him was a wise move, for his own sake.

* thus: "What any internet forum member posts on this forum(or other similar forums) is going to have absolutely no effect on the end result. I'm sure that EMI/Capitol Records , The Beach Boys & the others involved in this box set project are totally oblivious to public opinion, and the frustrated and disappointed fans. They don't give a damn."

Okie dokes I think its time

I have no doubt the box set is happening and I am with Andrew on the 'more time and money doesn't always mean better' tack but i think the powers that be should put out some hard facts at least about the release date to end all the confusion asap.

The reason for this is because of the speculation and conflicting stories that are appearing - we have 1st November, sometime in October and now (via Brian) talk of 2012. Whilst patience is a virtue, to quote Peter, the lack of hard info is beginning to grate on me.

I don't necessarily want a tracklisting (it would be nice) but something definite from Capitol which announces the release date.

To get so worked up about something Brian said (allegedly)

True, but Peter's response was potentially a little more ominous.

If we have to wait till next year so be it, we have to assume this is so Mark and Alan have as much time as possible to make the set as excellent as possible.

However it does feel like fans are being kept in the dark a little at this stage.

Also, given the many positive hints and evidence about progress being made on the box set in recent months, it does seem a little odd if they need more time than the rest of this year to get it done.

I don't personally think it's right to ban this guy for expressing his views no matter how wrongheaded, exasperating, stupid or contradictory they seem to (most) others. This is a forum, people should be happy to have their views challenged. If Phil Cohen has it all wrong argue with him - if you can't be bothered, ignore him. Making people disappear is not the answer imho and it leaves a bad taste. Just my view...

ps I am not Phil Cohen in disguise nor am I any of his acolytes, supporters or campfollowers. I am not his lapdog or any other familiar, either human or animal

Thing is, Phil's posts were getting a bit like that bloke who boards the bus and asks the driver repeatedly whether the bus stops at the end of the pier. The rest of us were content that the bus would eventually stop and we could all get off (oooh, kinky pun!), but Phil's yammering, telling the driver that the other passengers wanted him to stop at the end of the pier also, was preventing the driver even closing the doors. When he took to turning round and telling the passengers that the bus wasn't going anywhere because of the driver, and that they should all get off the bus now, some of the other passengers revolted and threw him off.  Bad analogy, but that's how it felt.

He's now peddling his crap over at the Imwan board (and no doubt others) if anyone fancies a snap.

Thus excerpt from the article tells me how much credence to place in what the writer says:

"Most recently, the George Gershwin estate approached him to work with some unfinished Gershwin songs, and he took the opportunity to record “Brian Wilson Reimagines Gershwin,” a collection of Gershwin standards and vocal orchestrations of sections of “Rhapsody in Blue.”

That album hit #1 on the Billboard Jazz charts one year ago, and Wilson and his band will play selections during their Napa concerts – and possibly play the entire album set in Europe in September."

That it is a full-on album show was announced back roughly this time last year. Also:

"“[BW]Jimmy Buffett has that kind of thing doesn’t he? We were on his bill once for a tour, and he has all kinds of girls in costumes running around."

"We" - the band - were not: Brian guested on maybe ten JB shows in 1998.

Doesn't mean squat, as has been proven when tickets to several U.S. shows were advertised for quite a long time as being full-album shows, but shortly before that leg of the tour kicked off suddenly they were "hits" shows, even after tickets had already been sold. He might have written that after seeing all the hoopla about that.

It's been listed on the Royal Festival Hall site as a full BWRG show for close on a year, and been sold as such, which in my world means squat².
