Didn't Brian also write a bunch of songs during the recording of That Lucky Old Sun, songs that weren't used on that LP? Wonder if we'll ever hear those?
According to Brian, he wrote about 18 songs during that time. Ten of them are on the album proper, and three more original tunes (Message Man, Oh Mi Amor and Just Like Me and You) were released as bonus tracks. So that leaves five other tracks -- and frankly, Brian might be counting his versions of I'm into Something Good and TLOS in that total.
Point is, there may well be a few songs hanging around from that writing binge, but not an albums' worth. I do believe, however, that Brian kept writing with Scott intermittently afterward and piled up a few other new tunes.
There are more than five song titles from that period mentioned. If you know where to look.
Personally, I would love a map

I like the Beatles a bit more than the Boys of Beach, I think Brian's band is the tops---really amazing. And finally, I'm liberal. That's it.

Brian is a little like Phil in that he always makes dire pronouncements about not being able to write anymore...until suddenly he's able to write several new songs and all is well. This pattern has been going on for well over ten years. I think Brian is disappointed that he can't write at the pace he did in the 60s, not realizing that none of his contemporaries write at that pace anymore.
Brian has actually been singin' the same tune for much longer than 10 years. I believe that there's a very old interview/article in which Brian complains about having lost his creativity, working harder and achieving less, etc. How old? I'm pretty sure it was conducted for Tiger Beat or a similar magazine in 1965 or early 1966... before Pet Sounds, Good Vibrations and Smile. Anyone else remember the interview I'm talking about? Paging Mr. Cameron Mott...
Yeah, I figured I was being overly conservative in estimating how long these kind of quotes have been coming out of Brian. It reminds me of how Pete Townshend continually complained about being too old for rock-and-roll in the 80s and 90s and then I discovered a quote where he said the same thing at age 24!

I think the most exciting news is that Brian is apparently writing songs again! All this recording hasn't been about remaking old tunes (although, given how BW has traditionally worked, I'm sure some are in the mix). He seems to be inspired anew.
You know...I was thinking that it's just about time for Brian to make his annual "I haven't written a song in ____ years, but I'm suddenly writing again" comment...

Just got an email from Dave Curtis of the Direct Current Music website. I had sent him a link to the now-infamous "early next year" article and asked if he had heard anything. Here was his response:

On Aug 23, 2011, at 4:37 PM, Dave Curtis wrote:
Hi Sean --
I just received the latest EMI release schedule and Smile Sessions is still showing up for 11/1.
That may change, of course, but I haven't seen that yet. Am awaiting more details about the package.
Dave
Can't really say that means much at this point, but it's better than TSS disappearing from the 2011 schedule altogether. FWIW

I'm pretty sure Phil has some serious mental issues. Not kidding - to get so worked up about something
Brian
said (allegedly) and then post the above, which is a complete 180 from a post in the now-merged thread where he states that Capitol take no notice of us* isn't the sign of a stable mind. I think banning him was a wise move, for his own sake.
* thus: "What any internet forum member posts on this forum(or other similar forums) is going to have absolutely no effect on the end result. I'm sure that EMI/Capitol Records , The Beach Boys & the others involved in this box set project are totally oblivious to public opinion, and the frustrated and disappointed fans. They don't give a damn."
Let it slide Andrew.

I sent an email yesterday to Dave Curtis of the DirectCurrentMusic website, asking him if he'd heard of any updates concerning the Smile Sessions release. Here's his reply:
Hi Mike -
According to the latest EMI release schedule, Smile Sessions is still on for an 11/1 street date. That may change, but that's where it's at right now. Am still thinking that this will come prior to the holidays -- that's traditionally been the best time to release box sets in particular.

I, I bet I know what she’s like, and I can feel how right she’d be for me. It’s weird how she comes in so strong, and I wonder what she’s picking up from me. I hope it’s good, good, good, good vibrations, yeah!!

So far, we've been getting some great teasers for the boxset - I'd say soon enough we'll hear some official word.

AFAIK, the only person, at this point, who is saying 'next year' is Brian Wilson. He's not necessarily wrong, but he's not the world's most reliable source of information. Just sayin'.

Remember, never fully believe anything from Brian, and that is where the 2012 date came from, not from Capitol officially or unofficially.
