No one appreciates that we now have vinyl versions of Cabinessence & Wonderful. Or can at least hear them on YouTube. For me it's pretty exciting just to have those two songs out in such a format.

In the case of Cabinessence, you mean surely out  in such a format once more?

Nope, it's a mono mix.

Perhaps a boycott of Brian's Disney album(or as some have called it, his "Mickey Mouse" album) might help us extract "Smile" from Brian, Capitol & The Beach Boys. It would send a message that holding back the "Smile" box will not enhance the sales of the "Mickey Mouse" album.

Weak, even for you!

In a new interview with Pop Culture Classics.com, Bruce said SMILE is likely to come out in October.  Overall, a good interview...

Does anyone know what type of glasses Brian wore on some of those 1966(?) studio session shots?

This thread is a great example of why the Smile tapes are best left unreleased. Some people just do not deserve them.

Entitlement is a dangerous thing; it is an epidemic comparable to cancer among Beach Boys fans. A goodly amount of the discourse here is based on the fact that anyone who has a positive outlook on the box set's release is committing Orwellian "thoughtcrime". I'd say that's all well and good. When the box set comes out, I'll see all the naysayers in Room 101. I'll have a bunch of my finest rats there, too.

Bruce Johnston just said, "It's likely to come out in October"
and not one person has commented on that. Strange

So with him saying that in an interview, I would guess the official
release date can't be far behind. I wonder if they have the finalized
running order yet. At least for disc one.

But the bottom line is this: we've got (likely) 90% to 95% of this material already, and if you know where to look, and (with only 2 exceptions) with full fidelity. The Beach Boys, in being so (seemingly) uncooperative towards the fans, are not exactly dealing from a position of strength or doing themselves any favors. The cat is out of the bag. The main question here is, are The Beach Boys going to permit themselves to make some money from these old tapes?

He also said that Capitol forced Brian to put "Sloop" on Pet Sounds -- I guess that story hasn't been "debunked" for this particular first-person participant!  Wink

Who knows when the interview was given -- as of a few days ago, Capitol WAS planning to release it in October. Bruce's quote is only "news" if he gave it less than three days ago -- and even then, it's "grain of salt" material...

Do you really think that 90-95% of ALL the SMiLE recordings have been booted? That seems like a stretch, to say the least.

Not sure how the BBs are being "uncooperative" -- in this case, anyway -- since they've been working on this project for a year now, and they've promised its release "this year."

I'm sure that Capitol and the BBs hope to make some money from those old tapes, but I'm guessing that Mark Linett and Alan Boyd are more concerned with the historical importance of this release, and not whether it's sure to move a million units by January...

The byline says, 'By Paul Freeman [July 2011 Interview]'

Thus, the interview wasn't done within the last 12 days.

Isn't Phil overlooking the "dream" aspect of this release? It's not all about the cold figures and release dates. It's about getting this far out Smile Sessions package to drool over like a child at Christmas morning again. You know it & I know it. If any of you get it and look at it critically on first experience, you don't even really deserve to have it despite however much paper left your wallet because of it.

If it's being put together rightly then let them take their time to do it rightly. I read your posts marveling at this huge oversight here. How many people are working on this release? The actual music - what matters? Isn't it only a few... Mark Linett...? It's not a laboratory of scientists, guys. Why should their lives be ruined and put to work 23hrs per day so that you can have something a little faster than you would have and months later forget why that immediacy really mattered anyway. Mark Linett et al, you have my permission to slack off and take your time on this release. Be cool, be yourselves, and check out some of the cool heads here who have the knowledge to set you straight.

I wonder too. Seems kind of obtuse. However it could be nothing, or it could be because they've synced up the humble harv vocals so keep yer hopes in check!

That said, let's not forget adamghost's post from a while back cnfirmi g that something interesting ha been found ..... Could well be the barnyard vocals. What a trip that'd be!!

On the Mojo single, the run out grooves also have quotes from the Surf's Up session. That's more intriguing, imo....

I'd certainly like (wishful thinking here in the extreme) to see the May 1966 H&V track. Surf's Up Part 2 fully orchestrated. Child Brian mix and an explnataion or clarification as to the opening vocals for CWTL (if indeed that's where they belong) which appear solely on the "Japanese" boot from 1989. I hope the booklet contains some of the photos I paid good money for around 10 years ago to a certain Mr Elliot.

Does anyone have any realistic idea how many units of SMiLE Capitol and the boys hope to sell?SMiLE has a certain historical value, and it deserves to be released(Deservin' ain't got nothin to do with it...Clint E."Unforgiven")and Linnett and Co. I'm sure are dedicated to the release of SMiLE ,BUT the entire SMiLE debacle is beginning(for the first time in 40 some years)to get tired,it's losing it's freshness , innovation-ness and that strange artistic aura that has surrounded BW,VDP, and SMiLE from day one.It is a bit troubling when you realize SMiLE,at this point, is about money, and does not have the respect and public clout that would press Capitol to release the sets sooner before later.Maybe Capitol is apprehensive about releasing SMiLE to a limited market, and feels SMiLE should be piggybacked by BW's Disney album(which probably won't amount to much)in order to milk all the sales possible from both albums no matter how bad the Disney album may be...it does not matter,Capitol is trying to what's best for Capitol and SMiLE will be released before long and none of it matters because the heart of the matter remains the same, that SMiLE is one of,if not the best, musical albums ever made.
