That short flutter horn bit from H&V Sections makes for a nice intro--signals the farmer waking up to the world.

Possible price announcement this week?

Beach Boys 'Smile' super deluxe box-set price announcement this week.

http://twitter.com/#!/spincds

I'll keeps tabs

Could this mean that they're doing a boxset separate from the vinyl boxset? ('super' deluxe boxset as apposed to a boxset)

A few pages back someone posted something from a music site saying that there was a 4 disc set as well as a vinyl set...if so I am really glad because, as much I'd want the vinyl for future use, I can't justify spending that much more money on something I can't use at the moment. Just sayin.

Very possible..

The new U2 box set has a Uber Deluxe Edition,  Super Deluxe Edition, Vinyl Box Set and the regular 2cd. I don't care for U2 but I saw that on amazon today..

Anyway the price difference between the Uber Deluxe and Super Deluxe is pretty significant, 659 bucks and 167 bucks ..

I would hope Capitol go that route, having a pretty lavish box set a decent price, and another really expensive one that has a few extras we don't really need

Admit it Shady, you're a huge U2 fan, you just haven't come out of the closet yet. All this talk about them Wink

I've been wondering if something like this

http://www.sonicworx.com/sonicWORX/About.html

could be used to isolate the vocals for IIGS and Barnyard from the Humble Harv demo?  I know that it was used by someone to isolate very successfully the vocals for Good Vibrations to enable a rough stereo remix.  The Humble Harv demo synchs very well with the existing smile backing tracks for IIGS and Barnyard.  I think this would be acceptable for a bonus track on the set.

All the boots I've heard where the humble harv vocals are synced witb the smile tracks never sound that good. He's really hamming the delivery up for starters, and the timing doesn't fit especially well. I have no problem with it being a bonus track but hope they don't do this for the main Smile-as-might've-been cd.

Reading all this, I am glad I saw U2 when they just had their first LP out. The venue held about 150 people. Admission was 5 Dutch Guilders, which roughly compared with $ 2.00 at the time. They played all of 'Boy', and, for want of any new material, played the whole of 'Boy' again. Nice. Not spectular, but energetic and nice.

I am happy to report that I left my U2 'fandom' at that. And I commiserate with the fans in the present. Well, if I see one of them having gone bankrupt, and lying under the bridge, I'll donate a couple of Euros, that's a promise. Bono wouldn't do that, I am certain.

But wasn't one of Brian's reasons for abandoning SMiLE the fact that he had only recorded "bits" that he didn't know how to string together? Clearly this wasn't the case for many of the songs ("Cabin Essence" and "Surf's Up" for example), but perhaps it was true for enough of them that Brian feels the statement is accurate. For BWPS, he just accepted that certain tracks would be bits strung together instead of properly-structured songs which is how he may have originally envisioned SMiLE.

I was thinking about the structure of the other Smile songs...Worms, Child, Wind Chimes, Cabinessence, Wonderful, etc all have verse/chorus/verse structure. Of course, Brian was often recording in sections during the period but the songs he was writing were the usual verse/chorus/verse format.

Is a good call IMHO. I never could make that much of the oft-quoted 'modular method of writing songs' etc. Not that it didn't apply to some pieces that were probably a bit hard to configure as a whole... but the things you qute are certifiably coherent songs.

I myself find the fact that many, um, partially legal SMiLE-constructions carry endless citations of the Bicycle Rider theme on them., telling. On first listening it's always a bit mystifying and alluring, esp. when appreciated in the dark. But then it can become a bit taxing on the ears.

I have always seen Brian (and esp. whilst working with VDP) as a 'Lieder'-composer in the classical tradition, like Schubert, or Charles Ives. Complex as his best creations were (and that includes God Only Knows, I Just Wasn't Made For These Times, Caroline, No, and Wonderful), they are wholly-formed creations, made by a craftsman at the top of his trade, and according to numerious reports, written in a surprsingly short time.

To summarize: I have a hard time believing that there was endless tinkering with tiny fragments going on, that couldn't really be placed into a proper song context. Isn't this more of a myth, having emerged in a time when fans got hold of so much sessions material?

I think it is a myth especially since he was noting what each bit was for and how it fit into what song as he went along. He wasn't just recording bits hoping he could find a place for them somewhere, he had each bit of each song thought out as part of a whole before he went into the studio. Imo.

Just to alert you, that over at Steve Hoffman's forums a discussion about this box set is going on, and numerous fans are saying that they've been "screwed" by Capitol's apparent release postponements, and unwillingness to give information. Peter Reum & Jon Busey-Hunt are posting in defense of The Beach Boys & the (apparent) postponements.

I'm not giving you any opinion of my own on this subject. You guys know where I stand.

Numerous 'fans' at the Steve Hoffman board are obviously ignorant as to the huge amount of work everyone is doing on this box.

We (and you did this too, Cohen) find compiling our Smile bootlegs, derived from 2nd gen tapes, ropey bootlegs, the occasional boxset release, and album tracks hard enough. These guys have the mastertapes. CUT THEM SOME SLACK.

I'll quote for you.

Quote
Paperwizard

Don't you just love how record companies screw over good fans? Hopefully, this stuff will come out before the end of the year.

Then some dude, one Tristero, said.....

Quote
Well, I don't think anyone's gotten screwed over here. I would describe their attitude as being more like disregard: Eh, they'll take what we give them, let 'em wait.

So your boy Paperwizard replied,

Quote
Maybe that was too harsh, but the changing information always drives me crazy. In this economy, I would make sure good I wouldn't disregard any client base. We all know there are delays, but it would be nice to see better communication on announced products, etc.

Then, people said things like,

Quote
No one is screwing anyone...there are lots of details to attend to....the kind that fans grouse about if they are not dealt with.

Quote
I agree. Plus, they want to time the announcement and release date to maximize holiday sales.
Chill. Please.

Quote
Not to stir the pot but how is Capital the screwing the fans? By all intents and purposes, Capital has been wanting to release this set for years but its been held up by The Beach Boys themselves. Also, the press release indicated it would come out this year - it's August and there's still plenty of time for an announcement and time for both the Beach Boys and Capital to lock in the set and do it right for the fans.

No one is being screwed here.

Quote
Maybe this is wishful thinking, but maybe they're still trying to obtain some of the 'lost' session reels? That would be worth the delay in my opinion.

I'm excited for this like everyone else posting in this thread, but I agree they need to make sure that they get it RIGHT. If that causes a delay then so be it.

Just don't shoot the messenger, okay?

I just don't understand why people would feel "screwed" by the change of a release date that was never announced in the first place.

The rumor mill has pretty consistently reported that work is ongoing. So there you have it.
