Bruce seemed cool for a brief moment or two, circa 1971-72.

Let me narrow it down, pinpoint. 1969 through much of 1972. Jack R. did what he had to do. Other than that, Alan was much more worthy. In other words 20/20 through Surf's Up. Major influence and contributor. We all have our peaks, that was his.

It just seems like Bruce likes to needle the non-M&B BBs a lot recently.

Bruce's comments at the seaworld show where he said Mike and Bruce are "The real beach boys" didn't receive enough attention.
The lady interviewing them was obviously a fan and when she remarked that it was only Mike and Bruce touring he got pissed and said "we are the real Beach Boys". Nothing more really needs to be said about Bruce, that sums him up.

I believe that what he actually said was "we're the Beach Boys", not "the real Beach Boys", and he was interrupting her when she referred to it as "your Mike and Bruce show".

The jist of it was that Bruce clarified that the band was called "The Beach Boys", not "Mike & Bruce". He seemed irked that the interviewer referred to them as "Mike & Bruce". It was obvious. Right along the lines of the premise for this thread.
The interviewer was right the first time....

I, I love the colorful clothes she wears, and she's already working on my brain. I only looked in her eyes, but I picked up something I just can't explain. I, I bet I know what she’s like, and I can feel how right she’d be for me. It’s weird how she comes in so strong, and I wonder what she’s picking up from me. I hope it’s good, good, good, good vibrations, yeah!!

nothing wrong in playing vegas, imo. have seen the group many times there in different casinos over the years. and as always, the audience ranged from the young to the old...just like today. in fact, one of the best beach boy shows i ever saw was in vegas in feb 1987. out of the blue brian showed up, thin as can be, dancing and spinning and playing and singing. he was having a ball! he made the show. i would see that concert again and again if god would only allow it, that's how good he and the group were that night.
not gonna debate the group then and now...but there is nothing wrong in playing vegas.

Yep. That "we're the real Beach Boys" came from Brian (or whoever writes his press statements)

In her flirty, "I love you guys" way, the reporter actually snuck in some good questions. Referring to them doing their "Mke and Bruce" thing, which made Bruce quickly interject,"we're The Beach Boys," as well as asking about the process of writing new material, which forced Mike to completely change the subject, as he obviously did not want to mention Brian at all. For those who are upset about the reunion not continuing, it was interesting to see this kind of interview, in which Mike and Bruce had to deflect questions about the future--yes, we're The Beach Boys, but we're also not The Beach Boys at the same time.

Some of their explanations are patently absurd. Bruce Johnston talks about a "noncompetition" and how "...the band that's called The Beach Boys is going to win". While I'm not going to say his points aren't arguable some of their comments tell me that they are exactly tickled with the fact that
a) Brian, Al and Dave have decided to go out as an exclusive unit and basically be direct competition to them this summer. It seems that Brian Wilson touring with his band for the past decade while the M&B show went on was one thing but now that he's recruited Al and Dave into the act it's quite another (for obvious reasons).
b) The fact that this other exclusive unit exists now draws attention the the fact that although Mike Love got the license to the name "The Beach Boys", outside of their paying audience they are viewed as somewhat of an inferior act in comparison with this other unit by the media, diehard fans and likely other musicians. For example you'll never see Bruce Springsteen or Paul McCartney turn up to jam with M&B at one of their gigs but both have played with Brian Wilson in the past.
Again anytime Mike or Bruce get into the realm of reasons and explanations it just borders on the absurd. At least to my ears.

In this case it really doesn't matter what either you or I think though does it? It only matters in this case what M&B think and it's obvious (at least to me) for Bruce Johnston to come forth with such a comment that they aren't exactly happy about this other unit of "Beach Boys" existing. I don't want to read more into this than I should but one thing to consider is that when Mike decided not to go forward with the C50, he probably didn't expect that Brian, Al and Dave were going to tour as a unit independent of the M&B show this summer. I can see how that could have ruffled some feathers in the M&B camp because whether or not it's direct competition in terms of drawing crowds, it's still another unit out there that can lay as much claim to being "The Beach Boys" as the M&B show can even if the other unit doesn't have exclusive rights to the name.

I think Bruce is right about winning the "noncompetition" (if it even exists) just by having the name The Beach Boys. Most of the people that go to Beach Boys shows know nothing about the band other than maybe a couple hits and that it is easy music to enjoy a cooked dog and a margarita with. Hence "Bands, Brew, and BBQ."

Bruce Johnston said that quote last year, according to the article. There was no Brian, Al, & Dave band as of last year.

Lets get a grip people.
Brian has toured for over a decade. Without looking back for the numbers some of his tours,(PS, SMiLE, which included the hits) were what 20-30 gigs, yet now with a tiny 6 gigs with Al and Dave there is some kind of competition? Really?
I said after my C50 concert that Brian will never do a solo show again singing the number of leads he has done in the past. Time will tell but the inclusion of Al this year makes me think he and his people know it. Expect Jeff and the band to contribute some leads as they have done the last few years.
Mikes show is a Mike Love solo concert in everything but name. It is what it is and thousands every year are ok with that.
Brians show will attract those who like the lesser known songs he covers. For that decision there may be fewer BW gigs but I don't hear him complaining.
Its different markets at the end of the day. Not a competition.
