Yeah, I'm not seeing the creepiness. I wouldn't mind that as a poster either.

Yeah, not creepy at all, just very cool

I'm going to echo the creepy sentiment. That photo is unsettling. It freaks me a out a little bit.

That's probably one of my favourite Brian pics I've ever seen. Really hoping it's in the booklet.

that picture rocks. Brian should grow his hair and sideburns out again in honor of the SMiLE sessions.  Smiley

SMiLE, weird? Well I never.
Heroes and Villains (the single version) is weird as hell though, six or seven different sections, totally unconventional structure, no chorus. It has this nervous energy that propels it forward, this sort of restless momentum. I really wonder if it could have been a number 1, though I imagine it wouldn't have been. I've always wished there the cantina section had sound effects, a sultry saloon background, with glasses clinging and poker chips dropping on the tables. I also wish False Barnyard had a Byrds type phasing effect put on it. I think that would have put it over the top, but even still, I don't think it would have matched Good Vibrations. No matter what happened SMiLE would have probably followed the same trajectory, it would have been underappreciated at first but gained a huge reputation. Brian should have just bit the bullet and put it out, it's funny how even shelving it his worst case scenario came true anyway. Within a year the beach boys were yesterday's news, so he really couldn't have done any worse had he released it.

Ok.. help me out here guys. I´ve been a fan for only 4.5 years now.. And ivé often wondered about the different versions of H&V.
What´s the difference between the single version and the one that ended up on Smiley Smile? Other than the single being released in stereo on the Hawthorne compilation.

And did they recorded the song from scratch on the SS sessions? I don´t hear that much differens in sound between the Smile era bootlegs and the SS version.

I guess I´ve never compared the versions side by side though.. maybe I should.

Brian finished a single version earlier in 1967 and sat on it. It's the "alternate version" that's available on the GV box and has the cantina section and false barnyard. It's my understanding that litigation with Capitol delayed it's release, Brian was withholding it until the contract dispute was resolved. He also didn't seem to know what to put on the B-side, whether it should have been "part 2" or something else. By June though he seemed to have totally second guessed himself out of it though, I'm not sure how much rerecording was done for the Smiley/"real" single version, but he did add in his baldwin.

I know right.... I get it on the first, and I just don't know how I'll process it. We've come into the BB's world (fairly late in the game) on the assumption that the original SMiLE would never see the light of day and now it's just over two weeks away. All those bootlegs, with the hiss, tape detritus and missing links that we're used to and taken so long to accumulate will suddenly seem an accessory to a realised and mixed entity.

Okay, judging from a semi-recent post on the SH board, someone's panties are going to be in a bunch over that. Smiley

EDITED because I felt I was too mean. But I still think certain people are real jerks despite them bringing people aboard the SMiLE train.

I'm sure sure Hunt and Lane will get all pissy because they think they own the phrase 'The SMiLE Shop'. I'm sure those two have their panties in a bunch, as well as their little buddy Ian Wagner. Actually, they are probably over at the "Record (Rest)Room" talking about how they are so beyond SMiLE and how it woulda been so much better if the set came out in '89.

Puke.

Well that certainly wasn't representative of the happy happy mission pak sound!  Wink

I don't know, I just am so sick of their ilk trashing this board because they have a problem with the guy that owns it. And therefore seem to imply that this board is *amateur* music discussion.

Well as far as those two go, I don't have a dog in the fight except to say that without them I personally would have not developed an interest in SMiLE as I did.  Once I became aware of SMiLE back in the late nineties, I immediately took to the internet to try to find out more information about it (I was unaware of Dom's book or that would've been my first stop).  I did a search and their site popped up and I basically spent the next two weeks permanently moored at The SMiLE shop taking in as much as I could about the album.

Good times back then

PS: Outside of pro wrestling or politics I have never experienced any other forum (and I mean that in a broad sense not "The Smiley Smile Message Board") where people change roles from Heroes to Villains at such a rapid clip as in the Beach Boys community.  Or so it seems...

Brian has a new site:
http://brianwilson.com/

Check out the name  Shocked

So I guess this would be as good of place to ask as any:

Has it ever been determined what exactly they sold at the SMiLE shop?  I always thought it was smiles, smirks and grins but I could be wrong?  Dentures maybe?  Grin

Btw: I love the flash intro but would you buy anything from those two conspicuous individuals (who have seemed to have aged very well despite the delayed grand opening) behind the counter?  They look like they could have less than honorable intentions.

Lysergic acid diethylamide would've been a popular product in the SMiLE shop IN 67' 3D 3D Cool Guy

Substitute early 2000s for late nineties and I'm in the exact same boat.  I've never been one to care about board politics (whether internal or between two different boards) - whatever the current conflicts may be, all I know is that The SMiLE Shop was life-changing for me.  Finding a community of Beach Boys fanatics who loved talking about the minutia of Smile, as well as the rest of the group's output, really just felt like I'd found my home.  Having started on the Bloo (the memories still make me shudder), I had no idea that such a community could exist.  I'll always be thankful to Hunt and Lane for that.

Not to interrupt the Hunt/Lane bashing (which is kind of out of line IMO), there were some concerns earlier about how certain Brian mixes might have been left off of the box set.

Remember the fifth disc of the Good Vibrations box set with the session bits for Hang On To Your Ego, God Only Knows, and Good Vibrations? Each of those tracks usually ended with a backing track or some kind of alternate vocal mix. There was concern that Brian's backing track edit for Child Is Father of the Man would be left off of the box set; theoretically it could still be there as part of the "Version 2", track 17, disc 3.

Mr Schneider over at the Hoffman board says the Brian edit is not present on the box at all.
