We find ourselves at what many believe is the "Toppermost of the Poppermost".
Quote
Sgt. Pepper is regarded by musicologists as an early concept album that advanced the use of extended form in popular music while continuing the artistic maturation seen on the Beatles' preceding releases. It has been described as one of the first art rock LPs, aiding the development of progressive rock, and credited with marking the beginning of the Album Era. An important work of British psychedelia, the album incorporates a range of stylistic influences, including vaudeville, circus, music hall, avant-garde, and Western and Indian classical music. In 2003, the Library of Congress placed Sgt. Pepper in the National Recording Registry, honouring the work as "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant".[1] That same year, Rolling Stone magazine ranked it number one in its list of the "500 Greatest Albums of All Time". As of 2011, it has sold more than 32 million copies worldwide, making it one of the best-selling albums in history. Professor Kevin J. Dettmar, writing in the Oxford Encyclopedia of British Literature, described it as "the most important and influential rock and roll album ever recorded"

I have totally reevaluated this album. This didn't make things easier. It actually made it harder. The next three weakest tracks are, IMO, "Getting Better" "
Fixing A Hole
" and
"Within You and Without You"
. My vote in RED, third week in a row.

Wow, this is painful. Though Sgt Pepper has never been a personal favorite of mine, I've always loved it. Listening to the remix is like hearing it for the first time (just ordered the box set!). Anyone else listening to the remix? Good Morning Good Morning is brought to life! Incredible. Sad to see it go. I think it's the "coolest" song on the album. Anyway, I'm forced to vote off
Getting Better
. Still, it's got one of my favorite moments on the album at 1:35 when George's tambura comes storming in and John and Paul harmonize those dark lyrics. Up to that point it sounded like the song was about to fade out, then BAM! Think about that. I especially like how they sing the word "love" in this section (particularly, John). It kind of reminds me of how John sang "
apologize
to her" at 1:25 of She Loves You. Now that I think about it, Getting Better is a nice example of how John, Paul, & George complimented each other. In honor of the great, departed Sgt Pepper's Reprise, I must say it contains another one of my favorite Sgt Pepper moments. At 1:06, when they get to the climactic "
Hearts
Club Band", I love the glissando(?) John sings on "hearts" while Paul and George hold sustained notes. Absolutely LOVE that!

BTW, I don't understand how people could so easily vote against Reprise so easily to start, but not vote for the first version soon afterwards. They're almost the same song!

The title track is essential! The reprise is redundant

I agree, and while it works as an intro song for this album, as a standalone song it just falls far short of the others here IMO
