We find ourselves at what many believe is the "Toppermost of the Poppermost".

So - Reprise

On a side note, I'm probably one of the few people in the world who thinks Getting Better is the best song on this album.

I don't dislike it. It's just my least favorite. I like the hard rocking of the reprise better than the comb-kazoos.  :lol

Rita is the only song on the album that sounds dated to me (all the little sound effects Paul added in haven't aged well IMO, sounds a bit amateur). It's on OK song, but clearly to me the weakest, with Reprise following closely behind.

Love this song, but... just slightly less than the rest of what's left. And it does feel just a wee bit out of place, like it would have fit better on Rubber Soul.

I'm sad Rita is gone.

Trying It's Getting Better again. I don't usually feel compelled to make a case for/against a certain song, but in this case, since the whole Sgt. Pepper "concept" was for them to go into a different headspace, go out on a limb a bit, do something different, experiment, etc. I feel like It's Getting Better doesn't fit that. It is a great song, but it's purely a great pop song, and not as experimental as the others. Sooooo yeah :)

Hmm, interesting observation. On the other hand, a pure pop song like Getting Better adds variety to the otherwise experimental stuff. In fact, I always liked  WI64 for that same reason - it's a schmaltzy song that seems out of place with much of the rest of the stuff, but its very schmaltzy-ness really adds to the variety on the album. In fact, I can think of few pop/rock albums that have such a great variety of songs (not counting double albums I suppose).

First, I just need to acknowledge my sin of misquoting the song title... Getting Better, not "It's Getting Better", that was a fail on my part, lol  ::)

I think you make a good point SMiLE-Addict, it does add that variety, and I suppose at that time it also served as a message to the fans that the Beatles they know and love haven't totally abandoned them for this new Sgt. Pepper persona. Honestly, I'm just looking for ways to justify voting off songs I love, LOL (aren't we all?).

And I would say that WI64 is quirky enough to fit the Sgt. Pepper "headspace" even if Paul wrote it when he was 16 as pixletwin pointed out (I didn't know that! Today I learned...)

We find ourselves at what many believe is the "Toppermost of the Poppermost".

Quote
Sgt. Pepper is regarded by musicologists as an early concept album that advanced the use of extended form in popular music while continuing the artistic maturation seen on the Beatles' preceding releases. It has been described as one of the first art rock LPs, aiding the development of progressive rock, and credited with marking the beginning of the Album Era. An important work of British psychedelia, the album incorporates a range of stylistic influences, including vaudeville, circus, music hall, avant-garde, and Western and Indian classical music. In 2003, the Library of Congress placed Sgt. Pepper in the National Recording Registry, honouring the work as "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant".[1] That same year, Rolling Stone magazine ranked it number one in its list of the "500 Greatest Albums of All Time". As of 2011, it has sold more than 32 million copies worldwide, making it one of the best-selling albums in history. Professor Kevin J. Wow, this is painful. Though Sgt Pepper has never been a personal favorite of mine, I've always loved it. Listening to the remix is like hearing it for the first time (just ordered the box set!). Anyone else listening to the remix? Good Morning Good Morning is brought to life! Incredible. Sad to see it go. I think it's the "coolest" song on the album. Anyway, I'm forced to vote off Getting Better. Still, it's got one of my favorite moments on the album at 1:35 when George's tambura comes storming in and John and Paul harmonize those dark lyrics. Up to that point it sounded like the song was about to fade out, then BAM! Think about that. I especially like how they sing the word "love" in this section (particularly, John). It kind of reminds me of how John sang "apologize to her" at 1:25 of She Loves You. Now that I think about it, Getting Better is a nice example of how John, Paul, & George complimented each other. In honor of the great, departed Sgt Pepper's Reprise, I must say it contains another one of my favorite Sgt Pepper moments. At 1:06, when they get to the climactic "Hearts Club Band", I love the glissando(?) John sings on "hearts" while Paul and George hold sustained notes. Absolutely LOVE that!

I agree, and while it works as an intro song for this album, as a standalone song it just falls far short of the others here IMO

Dettmar, writing in the Oxford Encyclopedia of British Literature, described it as "the most important and influential rock and roll album ever recorded"

When I was a  kid Lucy would have been my number 1. As I entered my teen years, A Day In The Life rose to prominence. That work still gets my #1 vote. But She's Leaving Home is a special case. It started off as a track that I would always skip over to it's current position as my #2 favorite song on the album.

But sorry, #2 doesn't survive in this game. That is why A Day In The Life gets my vote. It's a microcosm of every song on pepper in one track. It also is a fine showcase of how when Lennon and McCartney put egos aside they could achieve really important things.

I'd love to turn you on.

Was never a fan of She's Leaving Home.... it's not too bad, but it always bored me.... would have put it in the bottom half of the album IMO.

A Day In The Life is unquestionably a classic, and a high water mark for the Beatles. But although it's one of my favourites.....

My vote goes to Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds. Love everything about this song - in fact it might very well be my favourite track by them from their later years. One of the most psychedelic tracks they've ever done, and a real ear-worm. I couldn't pick any other track, not even A Day In The Life.

I'm probably going to be the only one to vote for this, but here it is: She's Leaving Home. It's probably in my top 3-4 on the album anyway.

I've always had an odd "relationship" with Lucy. The opening keyboard (which sounds completely awesome, both the melody/hook and the tone quality) and the vocals through the word "eyes" send shivers down my spine and, if I'm in the right mood, tears down my cheeks and is one of the most awesome vocal-keyboard interactions ever. But then starting with the word "cellophane" it goes downhill. The refrain is good, however, though not a knockout. So basically about 1/8 of the song is "world class" and the rest is "pretty good."

Day In The Life is good but was never one of my top songs on the album, usually in the middle of my personal ranking.

It'll be a losing fight for sure, but my favorite track off of Sgt. Pepper's is definitely "She's Leaving Home". Such a sweet and heartbreaking song, John and Pauls' vocal exchanges during the chorus are certainly a highlight of the track. However, the mono version certainly has the stereo version beaten. The stereo mix is just too slow, so it's a little bit more of a chore to get through. The faster mono version is practically perfect in my eyes though, so it earns my vote!

A Day in the Life

Easy pick here. In fact, I dont recall it getting a single cast off vote

Huh, I think you're right!

My personal rankings are as follows:

1) A Day In The Life
---
2) With A Little Help From My Friends
3) Sgt Peppers/Sgt Peppers Reprise
4) She's Leaving Home
5) Good Morning Good Morning
---
6) Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds
7) Lovely Rita
8] Being For The Benefit Of Mr. Kite
9) Fixing A Hole
10) Getting Better
11) Within You Without You
12) When I'm 64

I had to combine Sgt Peppers/Reprise to make it work and every time I attempted to rank this album the second tier songs (2-5) ended up in a different order. I feel bad about Getting Better being so low, that's a song that was more of a favorite when I was younger but other songs (Fixing A Hole and Good Morning Good Morning, especially) have really been growing on me in recent years.
