Dennis had to have met Shawn earlier than that. At the July 5th, 1981 show in Long Beach, Dennis shouted out "I love Shawn!" during "Help Me Rhonda". On a related note, I'm surprised that Mike didn't beat the living merda out of Dennis on that occasion. Hmmm...I've always thought he shouted out "I love this song!"...but maybe not. Watch the dvd, or listen to the recording again. About 10 seconds after Dennis made the comment, he also said "I love you Shawnie".

I've read that he started doing cocaine and drinking when his marriage started top end. I also read that he started "dabbling" in cocaine out of "profound unhappiness" in the group. I also have read that he did heroin from around 1977 to 1979. I'm not sure how much of that is true. How can you get addicted to something that serious, and get clean that fast?

Smiley Smile Stuff / 1970's Beach Boys Albums / Re: The Beach Boys Love You

Ok, here's my track by track runthrough of this album...monkeeknutz, you might want to look away : Let Us Go On- Not all that great of a song. Probably the weakest here. Roller Skating Child- I LOVE this song!!! It just might be my favorite beach boys song of all time. Mona- Another great track! When I listen to the "Love You" album, I can never listen to this song just once. Johnny Carson- Charming in a scratch your head kind of way. Only Brian Wilson could get away with writing a song like this. Good Time- I've never listened to this song all the way through. So, I can't really comment on it. Honkin' Down The Highway- As great as the album version is, this song COOKED in concert. Ding Dang- This is a great song. But it's WAY to short. Solar System- I kind of agree with monkeeknutz(what a great name ). This is probably one of those songs that sounded good on the piano at Brian's house, but lost some of it's charm in the studio. The Night Was So Young- What a BEAUTIFUL song!!! This was probably the very last perfect-from-start-to-finish beach boy's song. I'll Bet He's Nice- I love the "baby-ooooooooooooooh" backing vocals. Very pretty song, but sad to realise that Brian probably wrote and sang his lines with his wife in mind. Let's Put Our Hearts Together- Not that great of a song. I'm not that much of a fan of Marylin's voice. I Wanna Pick You Up- Charming and sweet, and perverted all in one. I love Dennis. Airplane- Another one that worked better in concert. There is a nice underrated falsetto-ish vocal from Brian on the album version, however. Love Is A Woman- I've never liked this song. The band sounds like a worn out "Saturday Night Live!" house band here.

Smiley Smile Stuff / 1970's Beach Boys Albums / Re: Holland

I think Holland is a really good album. The whole California saga is great from start to finish. Although I like the outtake version of "Big Sur" better. Mike "narrating" the Beaks Of Eagles section might be his shining moment. The (what I call) "lonely vacant desert" music underneath the poem works GREAT. I agree totally with donald. This album is about as far away from their surf image that they would ever get. This is also just about their post Brian creative "peak". The Trader is a great overlooked song. I think that Sail On Sailor would have been better with Carl singing lead. I LOVE the entire Mt. Vernon and Fairway EP. I think it should be considered a seperate album. The "main theme" is the most beautiful melody I've ever heard in my life. Magic Transistor Radio is really good. It would have been better extended. Actually, all of the songs would have been better as full three minute songs. It would be great if Brian could re-work it with his band and play it on tour. It amazes me that something as elaborate and complex as the "Pied Piper, bow bow" part would be so short. I think that the whole Mt. Vernon and Fairway "narrative" is a "last gasp" in a way for Brian. But that deserves a discussion all on it's own.

Smiley Smile Stuff / Smiley Smile Reference Threads / Re: The Definitive Vocal Credits Thread...

I know that this is kind of off topic, but I just wanted to say that I LOVE this thread. Hey, is there going to be a "bootleg" lead vocal topic? For instance, the song Sherry, She Needs Me. It's a 1965 track with a 1976 vocal. What I can't figure out is, is it a 1965 falsetto, or was the vocal totally "new" when added in 1976? Ok, back to the topic. I always thought that the "gruff" vocal on You Need A Mess of Help was Blondie.

2) "Smile" doesn't come out in 1967, and in 2004, ...The audience reaction is general bewilderment and confusion at the strange lyrics,
I think the odds of that being the reason for a 2004 audience not liking it were slim-to-none. Remember, the bulk of those lyrics had been in the BW fans' possession for 35+ years. There is nothing strange about them now (if there was then). A more likely scenario for why BW fans would have disliked it in 2004 would've been the sequencing, the sampled harpsichord and tack piano, the Walusko pirate-rap and the suspicion that Brian didn't really do all that much of it in 2004. Oh wait, those are the reasons the people who didn't like it DID give for not liking it. (I liked it. Both old recordings and released BWPS.) Ok, let's say that from 1967 to 2004, NOTHING from Smile had been heard by the public. Nothing from future beach boys albums. Also, not one single bootleg of one single strain of Smile music had been heard by anybody outside of the beach boys. Let's say that the 2004 premeire of Smile had been the first time that the audience had heard the "strange" lyrics, and everybody hated it. What would have happened?

Ok, seeing Mike get his butt kicked would be cool to see. We have established that fact. Now, can we please get back to the original question of the topic? Does anybody know EXACTLY what Dennis said regarding cocaine? Who physically attacked who first? Was this incident ever mentioned at the concert? Was it ever mentioned or downplayed to the media? Did anybody apologise to the public like Carl did during the Australian tour?

I have read from several different sources that Dennis and Mike ended up having a physical fight on stage at the Universal Ampitheater, in 1979. Does anybody know exactly what happened? Apperantly Dennis made some kind of drunken on mic comment about cocaine. Does any recording, film, or picture(s) exist of this?

Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Can Brian still do it?
|
on: September 03, 2007, 09:24:23 PM

I was reading the opinions of people on the GIOMH topic, and a few questions came to me that I thought I'd ask the more knowledgeable people here. My question is, can Brian still produce an album totally on his own, from start to finish? I know that many people don't like the backing vocals on GIOMH, so I'll make this a little easier. Is Brian still capable of leading his touring band through sessions for an album? Can he still be the "boss", like he was in circa 1966? Is he still mentally capable of it ? Is he emotionally capable of it? Has he ever gotten over his post 1960's Smile failure? What I mean is, does he still get the urge to "give up", like most accounts of him from the mid 1970's talk about?

Peter, I am just now reading your book, and I love it. Although I was a little bit saddened to read about the relationship between Brian and Carl never really "healing" in time before Carl passed. Particularly about Carl refusing to tour Pet Sounds in the 1990's with Brian in the group because Brian "lost his voice". Considering these new "revelations", along with the overall process of writing a BB's book, did you ever become jaded with the group? What I mean is, was the status of your "fandom" changed at all?

Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / The alternate lyrics thread
|
on: September 02, 2007, 02:22:21 AM
|
I thought that maybe in this thread we could post any alternate beach boys lyrics that we know of. For example, we know about the "cournocopia" version of Vegtables. There are also some alternate lyrics for "Cabinessence" that I can't recall at the moment. In the GREAT new Brian Wilson book "Catch A Wave"(insert shameless plug here ), there is a verse of "Beatrice From Baltimore". There is also a version of "Surfin' Safari" that has an alternate first verse. Can anybody think of any other songs that we know alternate lyrics of?

I think that it's really sad that the last album to feature Dennis on it turned out to be this mess. The title track, and Goin' On are the best songs on the album, and they were both much better in concert. The version of Oh Darlin' with Brian singing is better than what was used on the album, but that's not saying much. When Girls Get Together is the worst piece of sh*t to ever have been associated with The Beach Boys in any way, shape or form. Words can not describe my hatred of it.

I cannot hear it. The two stories are that either Mike threw the bench or the piano itself. I don't think he actually hit Brian but I think he shoved the object at him because he was staring off blankly.
I was actually listening to this very show a few minutes ago. I can hear a few "thuds" right after Lady Lynda, but the recording is quite "noisy" itself. In Brian's "autobiography", it says that Mike threw a chair at him because "He caught me playing a different song than them". I would take that with a very LARGE gain of salt, however.

Yeah this is a fairly commonly circulated two songs. No video has been seen except the stuff on you tube. Jon Stebbins decribed it in his book, but I think he just went from the audio source as well.
Does anybody know if this particular recording captured the full concert? It's always seemed odd to me that only two songs seem to be circulating. The source I've heard fades in a few seconds before God Only Knows, and Good Vibrations actually fades out before the song ends. If you look at the website www.bootlegzone.com, there is a Beach Boys bootleg that seems to be from this particular show. Could it be the same recording, or is it just mis-labled?
