The alternate lyrics thread
«

I thought that maybe in this thread we could post any alternate beach boys lyrics that we know of. For example, we know about the "cournocopia" version of Vegtables. There are also some alternate lyrics for "Cabinessence" that I can't recall at the moment. In the GREAT new Brian Wilson book "Catch A Wave"(insert shameless plug here
), there is a verse of "Beatrice From Baltimore". There is also a version of "Surfin' Safari" that has an alternate first verse. Can anybody think of any other songs that we know alternate lyrics of?

Oh Darlin'
It's A Beautiful day has on the album version one verse more. Same with the FFF version with Status Quo.

There is also the version of "Add Some Music(To Your Day)" with a totally different set of lyrics. There is also an alternate verse of "I'm So Lonely" from the "beach boy's '85" album. You can actually see footage of Brian singing it on YouTube.

PRO SHOT BEACH BOYS CONCERTS - LIST
To sum it up, they blew it, they blew it consistently, they continue to blow it, it is tragic and this pathological problem caused The Beach Boys' greatest music to be so underrated by the general public.

I cant remember the lyrics but there is an extra verse on Love And Mercy that wasn't on the record but he performed on a television appearance. AGD would remember the lines

Sail On, Sailor famously underwent revisions from VDP's originals by everybody in the state of California, it seems (quite a long writing credit). But I don't believe those originals are known.

"I was prayin' to a God who just doesn't seen to hear
Oh the blessings that we want most are what we all fear"
Sire reportedly insisted this was cut before releasing it.
"Santa Ana Winds" has totally different lyrics in its original form, as does "California Calling".

This isn't really alternate lyrics but alternate order of lyrics...
On the recorded version of "It's Ok", the chorus goes, "Gotta go to it. Gotta go through it. Gotta get with it."
But on the 1976 NBC TV Special, they sing the chorus, "Gotta get with it. Gotta go to it. Gotta go through it."
I could never figure out why. I think "It's OK" was recorded (and released on the album?) before the TV Special was filmed. Just one of of those Beach Boys' moments that makes me go "Hhmmm"....

In my opinion, the original lyrics to Santa Ana Winds blow the released one away

Ray Kennedy's lyrics:
I am a singer, a gospel singer
I sing for people, I sing for pleasure
Only a dreamer who came from nowhere
Sail on, wail on, sailor
Over the cities I see the rooftops
{I can't really understand what he's saying in this line}
Often frightened, unenlightened
Sail on, wail on, sailor
Sail on, wail on, sailor
Just like my momma said, Ray, there's a way
But you gotta get yourself out of that ghetto today
You might stumble, you could fumble
When you're down low, don't feel under
And the thunder and the lightnin'
Dawn is frightnin' when you're coked out {again, I can't really understand what he's saying, that's probably not right}
Heartbreak city ain't so pretty when you're down and nitty gritty
Sail on, wail on, sailor
Sail on, wail on, sailor
Sail on, wail on, sailor
And the thunder and the lightnin'
Dawn is frightnin' when you're coked out
Heartbreak city, baby, ain't so pretty when you're down and nitty gritty
Sail on, wail on, sailor
Sail on, wail on, sailor
Sail on, wail on, sailor

I did wonder too but the Beach Boys are always singing something different on live versions.

I think the first line that you couldn't understand, was something like, "When I have a sore throat, I pop a cough drop". I think the 2nd line you were having problems with is pretty accurate.

I heard correctly, then, but it was so silly I figured I misheard it.
