1226  Smiley Smile Stuff / Polls / Re: Beach Boys Survivor #13 - CHRISTMAS SONGS!!! on: December 03, 2013, 08:16:08 AM
While this may be slightly off-topic, what would be the best way to get these songs?
with so few shopping days left before pixletwin does his first tally...Just go to YOU-tube.  Many, if not all would be there.
My vote:  Bells, or as I just saw it listed on youtube...Balls of Christmas, and Santa's Got An Airplane

Good Vibrations     Cause this "Single" is still here.  You guys voted off one of the better tracks, why?  Just too short?  Whistle In is a Great song.  Please don't vote off Little Pad for being short.

1229  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Brian's decline coinciding with Phil Spector's decline on: November 29, 2013, 01:34:51 PM
The last four posts are all good thinking, boy we like to speculate.  If you research a bit, you'll find "not releasing" singles and stuff was very common for Phil in the early 60's too.  I was surprised to find that as great as Walking In The Rain is, it only reached #23 (Billboard) in summer '64.  clack and Cam Mott - Right On, I agree.  For some of us Friends is their Best long-player.  monicker and Mike's Beard, interesting time-line info.  He had plenty going on other than music too.  The Ronnie thing.  They adopted three kids beginning in 1966, and were married in '68.  Or as Ronnie put it, accepted her fate as a prisoner (her words).
Checkmates Ltd. -very good!  And as others have pointed out, Phil did a great job on Let It Be, and with George (Let it Down - the wall-of-sound lives) and John (his best solo releases to me) - save Rock-N-Roll.  That was a mess, but so was John by then.  And I'll add The Ramones - 1980, and he is still working it out...the guns were just a way of dealing with all the pressure, a by-product of greatness LOL
Brian, gentle Brian...he probably looked on aghast.  But still enjoyed the music.  Wonder if he liked that Ramones record.

Well, yeah, ya know all of these have the mastering error on disc 3....

Cynical as it may seem, that's probably why they put it up for sale - they're hoping to get rid of their problematic stock.

I agree.  This is their best way out.  They have the fixed disc ready to ship, no reason to open up stock to change a disc, and $80 is about what we were all hoping the "fair" price would be.  Don't regret paying what I did though - you get so many new mixes, new tracks, ect., can't wait to get more details from the experts.  Any up-dates on that?  Last I heard was "by Christmas."  Some bitchin' from others, but I am happy with everything.  I do not collect too many boots, many of the tracks I'm hearing for the first time.  So don't have anything much to compare them to.  Every Beach Boys fan should get this.  Mark and Alan, and all involved did such a great, great job.  Their work with fine tuning these tracks, (and fixing stuff on last year's mono/stereo discs) and for what's to come...Well, they just deserve a BIG THANKS from us.  I still want more...my wallet's ready for Adult/Child, Wild Honey (I want all the tracks on one disc - even if it's a mixture of mono/stereo), and Friends and CATP-ST, (I got, and was pleased with what they did with SU and Sunflower last year), and and...
Bonus tracks all around!  Hope the problems don't put them, or the suits, off from giving us more.  Soon.  I'm just getting older.

1234  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Mastering Error on MIC Disc 3 ? on: November 27, 2013, 07:19:04 AM
So HOW will restitution be made?

If they are shipping a replacement disk #3 to everyone that complains, I'm in.
but not RETURNING anything. Period.

If you like your MIC. You can keep your MIC.  Razz
leggo,  They are not asking us to send back the "bad" disc.  They even waved me sending them a proof of purchase e-mail.  Now, don't get any ideas folks... ah, a way to get one of the discs... Grin
Just got e-mail confirmation from @umusic.com that my replacement will ship out today.
1235  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Mastering Error on MIC Disc 3 ? on: November 27, 2013, 07:14:11 AM
Hey Everybody,  I have got through to Universal.  And now have a free number:  1-800-288-5942     This takes you right to customer service in Indiana.  They have the disc # 3 replacement.  John, this is the USA #, but if you key in their service:  FisherCustSvc@umusic.com I saw a UK #, but they could not verify it was right, great 'eh?  Anyway, because of the Thanksgiving holiday, they will be closed Thursday and Friday.  They said I should have mine "in hand" by the end of next week.
Don,  They told me that they had pulled all the boxes at Universal's warehouses off the market to fix the problem.  But, Amazon USA is still selling the stock they have, great 'eh, again!?!  So guess you could call the 800 number to find more info.  I'd be careful, as they have made a right mess of this.  And I mean Universal.  Three months, and leaving it up to the consumer to work-out sucks.  They even told me that "usually" they leave it to the dealer to handle, but are making a "special" except in this case!  Well, if they are waiting for Amazon to help, they are still waiting.  I will say, this is the first time I've ever had a problem that Amazon couldn't fix.  And, they did toss me a twenty for all the trouble.  The box is currently selling for $108, about twenty less than I paid.
This problem is about to be done, but I am soon going to order the John Martyn box, also made by Universal.  This is where monopolies, and not being able to deal with B&M stores directly gets us.  John, any problems with it you've found?  Just getting through the 18 CDs and the DVD will take me awhile.
Guess tomorrow I'll add an extra "to be grateful for" at the dinner table.
Roll Eyes Look UP,  Will

1238  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Mastering Error on MIC Disc 3 ? on: November 24, 2013, 12:43:19 PM
Don, John and to those of us that do care,   I worked on it some this past week.  Amazon US came up with a new twist.  Then insisted to move through, I had to accept replacement.  So I did; got it Friday.  Had the bad disc - so Don, hold on a bit longer.  Amazon has offered to remove/freeze orders, once they hear back from me. -Seems extreme, but Capitol/EMI/Universal will jump quick if they do.  Very quick, if they take it off around the world.
BUT, today I see another option open-up.  Amazon is aware that Mark L. is commenting.  Go to Amazon US reviews for MIC.  First page, review by rdf1206 (Sept. 18, 2013), go to comments:  Mark is #3, "We told EMI and they are repressing the disc.  ...I expect them to announce how to get the replacement soon." (19 Sept.)
Mark then wrote in again on October 17, saying he HAD several corrected discs in hand!  That was over a month ago, so why hasn't he posted here at SS.net?  I'll forgive him. MIC is one of the most amazing sets I've ever heard.  As others have said, it's minor, but still not right.
I got some GOOD news today.  Alan F. Smith posted  on 22 November, that he was able to get a replacement by calling Universal at 310-865-5000 through customer service. He has it in hand!!  Tomorrow I will call, too busy with football today.  Tried some other numbers last week, but got nowhere.
So maybe we are near the end of this road...

Good Vibrations.......until it's gone.  That "SINGLE" (recorded Feb.-Sept. 1966, released 10 October 1966) was a YEAR OLD by the time the Smiley Smile "ALBUM" (released 18 September 1967) got out.  Good thing we are not doing Greatest Hits releases, or how many chances would it have to get to the finals.  Another issue: "You can't do that to a great song like She's Goin' Bald"   The "Too late mama..." section is hip, and too cool to go early.

The clip that ORR linked says the BH version is a demo.  Nice enough, but Al does the better lead.  Also the album version has a lot more power.

Cyncie,  Thanks for the link.  Man, he is so open.  He seems really relaxed talking about this, and with a Dr. asking some of the questions no less.
When I saw this thread this morning, at first I didn't want to comment.  But now I will.  I don't believe Brian had a decline during SMiLE.  Period.  And, certainly nothing to do with Phil - Phil couldn't handle not having a single "not go top ten" every time he put one out.  All he had to do was keep going.  Everybody loved River Deep, Mountain High where I lived, the local bands were playing it at the VFW Hall and the stage in the park.  Just keep going.   Phil was also whacked by The Beatles, just like everybody else trying to get into the Top Ten.  It was done, The Beach Boys did it smack dab in the middle of it all.  Motown had hits all through the 60's.  Brian didn't quit because Pet Sounds wasn't a #1 record.  He was riding the top of the charts while he was working on SMiLE, right?  GV was still in heavy rotation in summer of 1967.  We all have our theories.  Mine is Capitol wanted a new record, and he gave it to them, and moved on.
Brian got better.  Smiley Smile was/is Great!  For me, Friends is a masterpiece.  All the late 60's records are happy, I had no idea he was "hearing voices" while he did them.  Where's the decline?
1249  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Beach Boys Trading Cards !! on: November 15, 2013, 12:07:30 PM
and if some e-bay scammer is watching our site, you'll get it quick...  Just sayin', if it's true they can tell which packs have "special" cards, we'll know.
Note to Mikie,  You are one of the few folks here I know that lives in an area where there are still many retail shops (the Bay area).  Is there any promo stuff around?  Like maybe something for the new Beatles release?  You know, something we might care about.  I'm going to drive over to Rhino next week and look into this a bit more.  If anyone was getting stuff here in upstate NY, that would be the place.  They may even have the BB cards.
1250  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Beach Boys Trading Cards !! on: November 15, 2013, 08:46:50 AM
Wow, that's great! That was part of it! The Record Mart has those things hanging from the ceiling. A bunch of them in the front of the store. But I also remember a floor stand, probably made of cardboard, which held the records and tapes. You know, a stand up display. It incorporated the same rings and album cover. Maybe individual photos of the band, just like on the album cover.

I was 14 years-old in 1976. I guess I'm  part of the second generation of fans that discovered the Beach Boys through the 'Endless Summer' and 'Spirit of America' albums. '15 Big Ones' was my first 'new' Beach Boys album. I guess I heard about the new album being released. I still remember walking in  and seeing those rings and album covers hanging down and walking over to the display. Bought the album. It became one of my favorites.

Thanks for posting the photo. I'll have to watch Ebay for one of those. I guess I like those 1970's albums a lot because they were the 'new' Beach Boys albums for me. I only have a handful of bands that I ALWAYS buy the new albums or new releases from. The Beach Boys were always one of them.
Thanks SloopJohnnyB,  It's nice to hear somebody say 15 Big Ones was a favorite around here.  And I agree, buying the records as they came out in store is something newer fans will never get to experience in today's marketplace.  That kind of promo push is over.  Can't find the records either.  What stores are left won't carry many new releases, or only one copy.  MIC was a good example of that, the new book, these cards too.  How hard was it for you to find last years stereo/mono issues?  My Best Buy and B&N had a few, and Target none.  Even in the 90's they were breaking open boxes, handing them out to first day buyers.  Waiting in line to get "your" copy.  Asking the clerks for the "promo" slicks, stand-ups and whatnot (those Beatle moving heads counter displays from 1964 come to mind) - much more exciting to have in hand, on the day.  When can we get it on Spotify, the "download" deal, or buying on Amazon has exactly zero excitement for me.  Now, if you're just waiting to see if the price will drop...maybe.  Or the UPS truck...   Some "special" extras are offered, but that's rare.  I can still look forward to something coming out, but it's not the same.  In fairness, I will add that my 13 year old nieces get real excited about "artists" like One Direction, but by then they were just hating on "last year's model"/ the Jonas Bros., Beiber, whoever - it's not like waiting for the years it took to get 15 Big Ones into the stores.  And they don't get the kind of hard copy promo stuff that was afforded to records up to the mid-2000's when B&M fell off the face of the earth.  I read somewhere here the other day that there is no Virgin store in London.  Well, we still have the trader shops.
Thanks from me too for the photo of the Big Ones' promo.  I do remember it.  I was not able to get one.  Even back then clerks were selling to the highest bidder.  In 1976 Zeppelin and Wings got top dollar.
Since this is about the cards, I will say, buy only for what YOU think they are worth.  I have a banana box full of cards from the 80's/90's.  Anybody here have the Roger Rabbit or Universal Monster sets?  Those import James Bond?  Very few of them increase in value. I'm glad to have them though.  And all my Beatle cards hold special value, to me.  If the Beach Boys would have got the offer back in the 60's, I would have bought them... now, those would be worth big bucks.  If I see a pack of the new ones,  I'll get some.
