Thank you Justin, lovely stuff...
Up close, and Rockin' !  Looking forward to the rest.  Big Stones fan 'eh?  I'll go back and watch some more later, I'm on the hunt for more BAD right now.  I did take a moment to read your touching tribute to Mike.  Do you have that posted on the We Love Mike thread?  You should do...  You have a very good camera, and a steady hand.
1327  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Brian with Jeff Beck Fall Tour Dates on: October 20, 2013, 12:13:10 PM
ontor, have a good time!  Will you be sending in reports live from the show?  If not, try to get to it soon as you get home.
1328  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Brian with Jeff Beck Fall Tour Dates on: October 16, 2013, 03:31:55 PM
God bless Rolling Stone. I think I last said that...never.

Well, the C50 article was pretty good  Grin
Doo Dah,  Don't forget the Brian cover back in 1976, before the internet, that passed for cutting edge news.  And thanks for starting this thread, it is soon to go to page 31.
1329  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Brian with Jeff Beck Fall Tour Dates on: October 16, 2013, 03:28:08 PM
If memory serves...

Hearts
California Girls
Sail On, Sailor (w/ Blondie)
Wild Honey (w/ Blondie)
Full Pet Sounds album
Good Vibrations
Help Me, Rhonda (w/ Blondie)
I Get Around (w/ Blondie)
Fun, Fun, Fun (w/ Blondie)

Brian was in great voice and an even better mood. Also, Blondie was introduced as a Beach Boy. I fully expect a headlining tour w/ these four next year.

Damn.  You serious?  The day they play in Oakland next week is my wedding anniversary, so I was going to pass on going.

Now I think I gotta make this.  Somehow.......
Mikie, didn't the $25 ticket deal come through?  If not cancel going out for dinner, and make her that special dish at home - she loves your cooking.  Pull out that Bear Suit from last Halloween and Do Magic Tricks under the sheets... Something.  Can't take a chance this tour will come back next year.               Jesse - Great review!  The Times is callin' in a job offer right now.             ontor, You remain the Star of this thread.  Don't stop til the Wild Honey's smeared all over that Shortnin' Bread, and the tour is over.  I am sure Brian does have something special for your show.  He's been checking this very thread, looking for ideas.          Nicko,  wait, I've forgot what you said.        If ticket sales have been slow, they won't be any more.

You can have any opinion. The weakest track on 20/20 to me is I Went To Sleep, and lots of people just love it.
Wow,  That's a great Brian track.  I will say, they should have put it on Friends, ...not like they didn't have room.  I do have it on my Friends Comp.

Well, after the B-52's made that sound more popular, Yoko has earned a degree of success.  I would suggest a trial run on YouTube, if it's there, first.  That long-long-player did sell about 50,000 in the USA, not so well in the UK.  As a completest, I own it, but it hasn't been on my turntable for, what, over thirty years.  I found mine sealed in a dump-bin.  And it stayed sealed for many years.  Actually, not that much of a completest on the Yoko stuff, but do have some of it.  That stuff would serve better for sale on E-bay.  There is a great comp. out there where artists re-recorded some of her material.  I'd start there.  Or just stick with The Beach Boys, much better.

Welcome Jon,  And yes, great name you picked.  I see some of the usual welcome folks have already been by.  I try to do as many as I can.  SMiLE Brian, this must be your first stop every day!  Hi.  And Jon, now you have got to find a cool avatar.  See you on the boards.       Will
1333  Smiley Smile Stuff / Welcome to the Smiley Smile board / Re: Hi all! on: October 16, 2013, 08:56:12 AM
RiC,  Welcome.  One long story deserves another.  Sorry, if I get a bit wordy.  All us Beach Boys fans have our "Get that Sh*t out of my ears and off the turntable" stories.  Back in the early 70's, me and my friends had listening parties.  I couldn't understand why nobody liked when I picked a Beach Boys record.  And, this is in America!  One such night, I played Sunflower, the rule was a pick got played all the way thru.  So as the gentle sounds of Cool, Cool Water faded into the night...In came "Cambridge 1969" -you may not know this one... It's from John and Yoko's Life With the Lions.  That track has Yoko wailing while John feed-backs an electric guitar for 26:31.  Side 2: recorded in a hospital room, stand-out tracks include "Baby's Heartbeat" - just that, a heartbeat looped for 5:10, "Radio Play" - as it sounds, John playing around with a radio for 12:35.  And, wait for it..."Two Minutes of Silence" - two minutes of the needle running through the grooves... Even the guy that put it on went to the kitchen for drinks.  Calls for "Revolution #9" and John and Yoko's Two Virgins filtered in from around the house, where many looked for relief and chatted while this was going on.  True story.             Moving on... There is indeed a lot of knowledge around this place.  What I did for years before becoming a poster (a few weeks ago), was find a poster who looked smart, then go into their posting log - some of them have hundreds of pages, there you will find the beginnings of this site from 2005.  Most of what is argued about now, is in that history.  Some of the old posters are still here.  Also, check "ask the honored guests" section.  Some heavy hitters there.  By all means take part in the current threads, you can even bring an old thread back up to the top, to add a comment.  Enjoy this place.  It can be fun.     Will

Welcome         Nice getting this early fall 'eh, I'm over in upstate New York.   Left a reply on one of your posts today, and thought I would stop by and add my late hello.  Hello!  And goodnight.  Need to get to bed.  See you on the boards,  Will
1335  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: All I Want To Do on: October 15, 2013, 06:17:56 PM
It's a nice rocker but it's one of the weaker tracks on the album.
Some people consider it a 'weaker' part of the album. I disagree. The song has balls, like most of Dennis' songs do. The Beach Boys needed some nasty rock songs like All I Want To Do. I wish they would've done more harder rock stuff like that. Maybe less people would've thought of them as surfing Doris Days, or whatever it was Bruce said.
Yeah. If only more people were aware of Beach Boys songs like this instead of pathetic crap like Catch A Wave.
Whenever I try and get friends into the Beach Boys, This is one of the first songs I go for to get them into it
What are you all callin' "weaker"?  All the tracks on 20/20 are strong.  Only weak track for me was Cotton Fields, and Al soon took care of that.  And bluesno1fann,  Catch A wave?  Crap?  Them's fightin' words!

I think that's it.... Not including solo of course!
Hi Freddie,  Question on the Smile Brother Label boot.  By first issue, do you mean that was the first Smile boot ever released?  Never really thought about it, neat if it's so.  Back in the 70's/80's boots were sold openly in trader record shops, but without the internet, it was all rather "no other information known"...  The date on that insert is 4 July 1983, yours too?  There were three on offer that day I bought mine in Berkeley, CA, Smile, Landlocked (which I also bought), and one called USA(which I passed on).  The only other Brother label release that I know of was Adult/Child, the real thrill of a find of all of them, that IIRC I bought about 1984.  The back cover notes reference "In the tradition of the acclaimed Landlocked LP..." So it must have come out sometime after the first three.  Yours is the first time I have seen one in the possession of anyone else. To my knowledge, I don't think they were ever pressed again.  Just the once.  You got yours in the UK?  Quite the find, as I guess you got this recently.   By the time cd boots came on the scene, I passed on most, because they cost more than I thought they were worth.  Now I regret not buying the Get The Boot ones, after hearing them on YouTube.  The Adult/Child cd boot is different than mine (which has 17 tracks).  My Landlocked has 17 tracks as well.  'Fraid I don't live in the I-Phone world, or I'd include some pics of some of my stuff.  I have collected since I was a kid.  Some of my 1st pressings include Smiley Smile (still in it's original shrink wrap), in fact a whole set of 1st pressings of most of (didn't get started until 1964) their records -Stack-o-Tracks (Gate-fold with booklet, with my pencil notes Roll Eyes), one of the UK pressings (for mintness' sake).  If you have not seen the S-o-T UK vinyl, it is a single sleeve with no booklet. I have some of my favorites on Japan Vinyl - 45's (mostly UK stuff, but some USA...note: kids didn't take care of there 45's in the 60's...so they are dust.)  In memory of childhood, I had all the Vee-Jay, assorted 63/64 Beatles records too, nah - dust too.  I have thousands of just vinyl records.  My hands would get tired listing all the stuff around here.  I have not listed even one cd, dvd yet. Most all of it, though, I must be one of the few here who did not get into last years re-union of a band that has not existed, could not exist since 6 February 1998. (let me sneak that in here quietly, so as  not too many of you will notice Thud )  Have all of the box sets I could get my hands on...including one that listed one Andrew Doe (in Peter Reum's booklet/title page note by Roy Gudge), The Capitol Years, World Records Box, 1980.  I bought that in 1980.  Looking back, as I certainly didn't know who he was then, might be the first time he was listed in a sleeve note.  But, you would have to check with Andrew on that, as I am most surely not an expert on The Beach Boys.  And no, I'm not including my address so one of you can come by with a truck!           Oh, and I'll check later, and get back to you...I don't remember for sure, but I don't think the Holland EP came with a lyric insert.  It's getting Late here, and my records are down the hall.                                     EDIT:  Freddie,  My original Holland USA, bought January 1973 has a lyric sheet that includes all tracks except SOS and the EP.  If Smile Holland has a special lyric sheet for the EP it is unique to his UK or Netherlands release.  Mine did of course have the pic sleeve.  Later/early 80's, I did get a UK copy, mostly to check if it sounded better.  I got it from a trader shop, and was mint, but as many UK releases, was not sealed.  It must be a second/later pressing, and does not have the lyric sheet, and the EP is in a plain white sleeve.  While rummaging through the vinyl, I did find something to play... Wait, I think I see it in there,   the BB/Brian Wilson Rarities 1981 Australia (Purple Capitol label) - the one with What'd I Say (live in Sydney), and the Dennis & Rumbo Lady and Sound of Free 45 mixes.  This thing is so neat.  The notes are by Glenn A Baker (winner of BBC Rock Brain of the Universe/compiler extraordinaire). Another name I was surprised to find was Warren Barnett, one of my favorite mastering cats, who helped found Raven Records in 1979.  He did the Best mastering ever of Bobbie Gentry's whole catalogue.  Baker raided Capitols vaults, finding lots of tracks recorded in Europe, on singles, and such, that this long time fan, had never even heard.  If you like Bobbie, these are the ones to get.  He made Captain Beyond sound better than the original vinyl (if you buy that one, be careful to get the second printing, as the first had a mastering mistake they did fix and send to the fans - unlike the mess I am having getting my MIC disc 3 replaced).  And has done the first five Al Kooper records.  Raven Rocks. I'll try to take the time later to add some of my CDs and DVDs.   It's lunch.

Hey Will, somebody really harassed you?  Who was it?  I'll go over there and beat 'em up for ya.  Unbelievable that somebody would give you a bad time here - you're a good contributor.
yup,   but Lips Sealed  Hi Mikie,  Thanks.   I'll have to deal with it as best I can, and move on.  I have been a Beach Boys fan for near the same 50 years they have been around.  I deserve to be on this board, even if I make a mistake now and then.  I could PM you to explain, but it is so obvious, as some of it has already been made public in posts.  Wish the whole thing had not gone even that far.  Is what it is as they say, can't get love from everybody in this world.  Just their personal opinion.  Thank You Jason for answering my inquiry so quickly.  Mikie, See you on the boards.  And, be careful in these woods... snarks, baiters and biters are everywhere you look.
1339  Smiley Smile Stuff / Welcome to the Smiley Smile board / Re: Ask the Moderators on: October 14, 2013, 12:41:12 PM
For the record, the mods and I have come to an agreement with regards to the rules on here. We're going to be watching the board a bit more carefully and we have a new policy in effect on bans. Each mod, at his own discretion, has the power to ban those who are clearly in violation of the rules.

First offense - Banned for 7 days
Second offense - Banned for 30 days (a month)
Third offense - Permanent ban and account deletion

In extreme cases, a first or second offense may be grounds for a permanent ban...again, at the discretion of the mod involved.
Hello to all the Mods,  You are doing a great job, which I mentioned in my welcome page, but will add here as well.  Now the serious stuff:  I have stopped posting for now, due to harassment.  Most, but not all, welcome new posters.  So - three questions that I need to have clear understanding of...
1.  Is it okay to say anything in a PM, no matter how nasty and vicious?
2.  Is there some button that I am not seeing, to save a post that you have put a lot of time and energy into, without posting it out-right?  I did that the other day, and when I came back from my fact finding mission, I had to start over.
3.  Another "tech" question.  I think I now need to remove my e-mail addy.  How do I do that?
Maybe one more.  Jason, Would it be okay to add that quote, by Noam Chomsky, to my signature, so all reading my posts know that at least I have the right to free speech?  Of course within "clean" limits.         Thanks for your time,    Will

Here, I'll balance it out for you by a snippy review:

"Towards the end of Beck’s graceful set, Wilson’s gang made their way back to stage, lending voices to the mix — a “Surf’s Up” chorale for Fender and falsetto. The wordless parts were wondrous, floating, ethereal.

“Barbara Ann” was more Beach Boys bullshit, but at least Beck impaled it. Seven guitars? Really? With Jeff Beck onstage? Please.

Classic rock is a dead dog, its tongue stuck to the sidewalk. Brian Wilson is a joke. Sue me. But Beck, even at his loungiest, moves forward. The thumb."

Brian Wilson and Jeff Beck deliver a virtuoso night of music

http://www.bostonglobe.com/arts/music/2013/10/10/brian-wilson-and-jeff-beck-deliver-virtuoso-night-music/c3yafmK6D74szfKz7UhsmN/story.html

"The Love is gone, as in Mike, playing state fair tents with his Beach Boys jukebox. But Brian Wilson’s family is growing. He already has the better band and now he’s got Al Jardine, the only Beach Boy whose vocal powers remain undiminished. And at the Wang Theatre Wednesday night, Wilson’s group threw us a curve ball Clayton Kershaw couldn’t snap off on six days rest.

A few songs into his set, Wilson called onto stage Blondie Chaplin, who left the Beach Boys during the Nixon administration, and the singer performed the best version of “Sail On, Sailor” you’ve heard since, well, the Nixon administration.

That’s not all. Original Beach Boys member David Marks, another special guest and castoff from Love’s traveling show, took on the baroque pop of the late Dennis Wilson’s 1968 song, “Little Bird.” Anytime the dude in the back corner (multi-instrumentalist Probyn Gregory) is desperately switching from trumpet to banjo, you know good things are happening."
The show was awesome, but there is no reason for the writer to dump on the Touring Band. And, why is there such a hostile and intolerant attitude about the agrarian venues, that actually feed us? Food doesn't come from a store - it comes from the people who grow it.  You don't see that bigoted attitude outside the US, I don't think where there is respect for farmers and farms.

I've been reading that paper for decades, and they have not always been so generous to the Boys, especially back to Pet Sounds and Smiley eras.  True, the tide may have turned.  Seeing music in a big city glam venue doesn't change the fan base.  It is just intolerant to diss a "country fair" or even a casino.  It's not the venue, it's the music. JMHO

And, for the author's info, Carl Wilson did a fine job both on SOS (as did Billy Hinsche) and Wild Honey on the single, and live.  Cowsill knocks them both out of the park as well.
I don't get the criticism of county fairs as venues, either. There are fewer of them around due to budget cuts and less agriculture in the US, and those that remain have often been turned into legit concert venues. In fact, you sometimes pay extra to attend the musical portion. The Orange County Fair and the California State Fair are a couple of examples of that, where you pay up to $40 extra for a seat. They often feature contemporary acts as well as oldies acts. I've seen a variety of excellent bands at county fairs over the years, including the Four Tops (with Levi Stubbs), B.B. King, Del Shannon, the Turtles/Flo & Eddie, Johnny Rivers, the Everly Brothers, the Fabulous Thunderbirds, Dwight Yoakum, Tower of Power, and others. All excellent shows, as good as any you'd see in a concert hall or night club. I've never had a great desire to see Mike Love with the Beach Boys, but I won't put them down for playing country fairs or casinos. Both of which Brian himself has played, at least a few times.

As for the reviewer who hated Brian and love Beck, I disagree that classic rock is a "tongue stuck to the sidewalk." It makes people really happy because it's GOOD music. People who go to Mike's shows and say they enjoy them are enjoying Brian's songs. It's not just nostalgia, because people too young to remember when they were hits get into it, too. I know the people who go to Brian's shows,at least, are often college age, and they like it when he does "the oldies" as well as the more obscure tunes.

EDIT:  I have removed this post.  I have no issues with filledeplage or KittyKat.  The posts were confusing to me, and I let it spark a feeling I shouldn't have gone to.  I want more harmony on the board.  I like what ontor has been doing with this thread.  But some of these reviews are so out in left field.  He brings real humor around here, and on his Youtube channel.  Some Folks keep giving him sh*t for it.  Look back in the thread, others, not just me, have been defending him and pushing him on all week.  I think an occasional rant is funny.  I'm a long time fan of Keith Olbermann.  Not everyone will agree.

Brian singing "I'm A Little Teapot".

What the heck is it from? Shocked
Hear, hear!  Great again!  How did you find that.  Key in Brian, and look through many pages.  Or did Rodney send it out as a brag/goof to all his friends.  "Hey, look what I got!"  Brian does do some of those kiddie's cd releases.  What are they...yes, For the Children. Neat find Pretty Funky.

1346  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Lest we forget - 47 years ago today... on: October 10, 2013, 06:29:41 PM
Nice, Good find Andrew, our historical watcher.  I can't recall the last time I saw this.  Has it ever been put on an official video/dvd?  PBS13 is a New York station.   aside:  When I read this back, it reminded me of the first time I met John Martyn, that's what he signed -Watcher, - now I've used it in a sentence. Cool

It's on the "Doin' It Again" DVD.
Thanks Rocky,  When that was listed last year I passed on it.  Is there anything else historical worth having?  So like the suits to bleed us, why didn't they put it on Endless Harmony?  Any more Videos, like on Sights and Sounds? Did they even make any videos for TWGMTR, I don't go close to MTV LOL.    I put it on my wish list and will look into it more.  They were putting out so much stuff during the reunion, I just thought it was more hype.  Bet those 'zine-packs are still around.  Yikes!  Unless there is more than the one track, I'll wait til it's a fiver.
1347  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: How much of American Spring was Brian responsible for? on: October 10, 2013, 04:47:26 PM
Been listening to Spring since release, July 1972. Every track Brian sings on is granted an extra edge.  Not included in the "rank the tracks" section, I'll put it here.
1.  Sweet Mountain - Diane and Marilyn.  Could The Boys have done this better, maybe not. Keep up hope they will someday find it at the end of a reel.
2.  Awake - Marilyn with Diane. This would have fit right in on Friends.  Marilyn is a great singer.  Have this on my Friends era comp., after Wake the World natch.  Need to research when it was written.  Brian's demo is one I've only discovered recently.  The sequencing, with my #1, on the record is a one-two-punch. Killed by Superstar, which is just too sad to follow.  That's not Brian.
3.  Everybody - Diane's showcase.  Tough to put it before those King numbers, but it belongs at #3.  I had the Tommy Roe 45 when I was a kid, big Hit - #3 in the USA/#9 UK, need I say, Spring brings so much more. A thrill.
4.  Down Home - Marilyn is the lead, but Diane helps make this the definitive version of this song. Carole wrote this for Little Eva in 1962, they took it away ten years later.
5.  Now That Everything's Been Said - Marilyn with Diane and David.  Don't think for a moment that Carole King was not a big influence on this record. I'm sure they knew her.  I still have my City long-player from 1968, and was lucky enough to have seen her back in 1970 when she was in Taylor's band.  He persuaded her to sing one lead - Up On The Roof.  I've seen Marilyn and Diane live too.  They played this.
6.  Mama Said - Marilyn is credited with the lead, but Diane and Brian add a lot.  This is a group vocal, Marilyn is pushing it claiming a lead.  This song is Southern through and through.  Right up there with Back Home and Brian's gospel leanings.  It's got to be him on piano.  Don't need to tell anyone here, he was rockin' from 1968-'72.  I like to say, "Rockin' from the Bedroom."
7.  Thinkin' Bout You Baby - Marilyn with Diane and Brian.  Subjective of course.  I like this version best.
8.  Forever - Marilyn with Diane and Carl.  This gets my top pick of the Beach Boy numbers.  For one, they got Carl to step in to help, and Rick's arrangement is inspired.  I hardly remember the Sunrays when living through the mid-sixties, and don't understand why he couldn't make it bigger.  I'll go off-thread and say the track he did on Murry's Moods record, Island In The Sky, was the best track on it.  And who knows why Won't You Tell Me wasn't developed (the one true best thing Mr. Wilson ever wrote).  Give it to The Lettermen, The Vogues, yes, The Association - they were still around and the demo does sound right for them, sh*t give it to the Bragati brothers - yes, that would be my first choice if I had the producers hat on.
9.  Good Time - Marilyn with Diane and the Beach Boys.  I have loved this from the first time I heard it.  All versions are great.  It's the same fun they are having on Everybody.
10. Tennessee Waltz -Marilyn with Diane and Brian.  Wilson plays Foster.  Sure that's what he was thinking.  He did a beautiful job on this, but here it's just another diamond amongst all the other riches on this project.  Have you heard his version of Goodnight Irene?  Reminds me of this.
11. This Whole World - Marilyn with Diane and David.  Not so much a mistake, as just one they couldn't have really thought through.
12. Superstar - Marilyn with Diane.  Diane should have been given another showcase.  The only song that drags.  Should not have been put after Sweet Mountain.  If this was a message to Brian, it didn't fit. Bonnie Bramlett wrote this for and with Leon Russell, and she sings it best.

Cool

Is there a way to watch the show online as it's happening?

Not sure about a stream, but they do put episodes online:

Better grab it on a dvr quick.  NBC won't leave them up for long, and they don't play long on you-tub either.

Just back from youtube, still nothing...but did stop by Til I Die @The Sands again.  Great, great, great! 3D  And, And... a plug for our on ontor.  On the Chuck/Freshman mash-up, did I catch Mike taking credit for the idea?...Mike Love is Crazy...(removed by who?)...must be the Kokomo Syndrome...could Carl look more embarrassed sliding out on that surfboard?  That's all the Mike that fits -"I'm the Surf Word man."  If it makes you laugh out loud - it's a terminal - "gimme some due!" The morning will go on...with help. Lips Sealed
