1351  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Brian with Jeff Beck Fall Tour Dates on: October 10, 2013, 05:15:11 AM
According to Brian's forum, Blondie was there for "Sail On Sailor" and "Wild Honey" tonight.
Hi Mayoman,  Welcome to the board. Grin   Boston, my new favorite set so far.  This tour keeps getting better!  Blondie should be at all dates.  Jeff is doing "Even Odds" -one of his better recent rave-ups from 1999.  Was there a dry eye in Boston as the lights went out after Danny Boy?  Bet not, me too - I'm Irish/English.  Hope they do a dvd.  Note from the Albany show:  Jeff made a comment the other day about how folks should turn off the recorders and just enjoy the show.  The up-loader mentioned he was being hassled by security! -"stay in 'yer seat kid, we's got a show going on."
1352  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Brian with Jeff Beck Fall Tour Dates on: October 09, 2013, 05:57:14 PM
ontor,   When do you find time to sleep?   I am following this thread, but not adding much.  I'll soon change that. Grin  Yesterday was my only chance to see the show, but gave up on finding affordable seats at 5pm...The Palace is a nice place too, around 2800 seats, built in the 30's.  They had 75% sold last time I looked.  Most ticket re-sellers were listing as Jeff Beck and Brian Wilson, how about that all you Brian fans?  Oh well,  got up this morning and watched the PA show you found, and glad I did - as that has been removed.  Overall the best set/show I've seen so far.  This is sure a better pairing than the Paul Simon deal.  Got anything yet from Albany?
1353  Smiley Smile Stuff / The Beach Boys Media / Re: Picture Request: Walk of Fame Star on: October 08, 2013, 10:20:14 AM
It'd be awesome if any of you guys have a photo of the Beach Boys Hollywood Walk of Fame star that you'd be willing to share! I'm wanting to add an image of the star to the "legacy" section of the Beach Boys' Wikipedia article, yet all of the photos of the star I've found online don't state the copyright status of the images and as such, I'm not allowed to use them.

Also, if you have any other photos of Beach Boys related stuff you've taken and wouldn't mind seeing on Wikipedia, don't be afraid to post them here!

Cheers!
Hi Quzi,  The Wikipedia page looks pretty good to me.  If that's all your doing, then GOOD JOB!!  I found some info...Not the photo that Lowbacca found, but one just a few more clicks down the same roll of film.  To find the AP Photo/ by Lennox McLendon         Google:  associated press December 30, 1980 beach boys Hollywood walk of fame            ...click:  the first stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame (it's right at the top)      This takes you to The New Haven Register    A very good photo is on page 32.  My newspaper clip is yet another photo (with Bruce chopped off LOL), as you know, Dennis was a no-show (on the beach?).  If you can find a way to access files from The SF Examiner, they ran a story on Wednesday, Dec. 31, 1980.  And, the same photo in Datebook section Thursday Jan. 1, 1981 - where they were kind enough not to clip Bruce...Who was in his customary white shirt/white shorts, ahh, winter in California...  if you don't find it, here are a couple of quotes from Mike:  "I see us as a contemporary folk group"    Really? (I said that).   And:  "I like to think that our music will still be preserved 200 years from now, on holograms or whatever."  "I think we provide an essential service...as long as we have a good time doing it, we're going to continue to provide it."   They made no mention if he was levitating over the star, as he spoke!  I was lucky enough to see them a couple of weeks later at UC Davis (in a gymnasium, natch), good show.  If you come across anything on that show, pm me.  I saw someone post the other day, that they never played gyms, but they did, even back then.  You know Quzi, I'm not that great at all the "tech" stuff, like even posting photos on this board yet, but hope to learn soon.  Then I will post the whole article in the media section.   see you out on the boards,  Will
1354  Smiley Smile Stuff / Welcome to the Smiley Smile board / Re: Hey Everybody on: October 06, 2013, 08:14:21 AM
Hello and welcome!

It's always great to have people around who were actually there when it happened.

I look forward to what you have to say  Smiley
Hey Bubbly,  thanks for the kind words.  And for dropping by my welcome.  You are a very busy poster!  I commented, to bluesno1fann, that we joined at around the same time, and I remember when you were the newest poster listed, because I was checking everyday to see when I would get my okay to start posting...it took me a month to get signed up!  I checked some of your posts this morning, and saw your comment on The Kinks, you really should try more of there stuff, go beyond 65-71, they were great to the end.  And Ray still is, do check his solo releases, on Youtub if nothing else, to see what you might like.  You will not be seeing them back again, Ray, unlike The Who, will not "just use the name to sell tickets.  How can it be the Who, when all you got is the guitarist and the singer, some players can't be just replaced (ask The Stones) - call it something else, the real fans will know.  Oh, who do we know that's doing that? LOL I always respected what Zep did when faced with losing a member.  They Stopped.  mini-rant over...back to the Kinks...  The very next one should be Face to Face Deluxe version.  This is one from the period you speak of, 1966.  And, also one that has Nicky Hopkins on keys!  He was with them for awhile.  One of the very best, and a cat that everybody from the Stones to Jeff Beck wanted at their sessions. He came to work in America in the late 60's - with among others, Steve Miller, Quicksilver and the Airplane.  "Session Man" is about Nicky.  Read that book about him from a couple of years ago, and you will see what I mean.  All the news that will fit this morning.  I'm on my third thank you, and it's taken me two hours...I want to go check the board.  Take care out there,           Will

welcome aboard
hey southbay, Sorry to take so long getting back to you.  I do thank you for coming by my welcome page.  I checked some of your posts, and noticed the old RS cover with Brian.  I still have my copy, having shipped it across the country twice.  I changed coasts a while back.  That passed for "breaking news" back then, now RS is just a suck-rag with no value.  I don't read it.  We got the net now with "The All Powerful" knowledge and scope.  And Youtub and right here at Smiley Smile dot.  Also saw your reply to Stephen Desper, that was ballsy.  But, you have the right I guess, he's now a fan like the rest of us.  But, I don't want to run him away from this board, and I have seen him challenged before on a Monterey Pop Festival thread, and he got mad!  I personally love what he has given music - He was there when Brian was "Rockin' from the Bedroom" - swd helped on one of my (and I bet your) most treasured periods of the Beach Boys, and let's not forget Spring.  He is one of the Greats in Music.  I love the way he starts all his posts by first posting the word, comment: Cool Drum  Okay, let me go, this is my second post this morning, and I've still got to write Bubbly.                               See you on the boards,  Will
1356  Smiley Smile Stuff / Welcome to the Smiley Smile board / Re: Hey Everybody on: October 06, 2013, 06:38:24 AM
Just home from a holiday. A belated welcome from me as well. Smiley

Hi Klaas, Thank you for stopping by my welcome page.  I have been having a good time here since I quit being "just a lurker," and started posting.  Had a couple of "live with the thread" days, which is way fun.  Glad to see you posting a bit more too.  The one thing I have trouble with, is not knowing who I'm addressing - some of these aliases are cool, but it's hard to seem in anyway serious when say someone like Billy, with his changing with the wind monikers, - funny as they are, - if I do get a chance to answer one of his posts (and I have), I call him Billy.  He helped me get on the board, after I had a tough time with the robot filter.  Also, let me say I respect what you, Jason, and Billy are doing for this board, I wouldn't want to do it.  Jason can do it very well, and with humor.  I was lurking "live" the thread when Bergen had his melt down, and Jason tried to cool the situation with - "Is that you, Bruce?" - Hope I'm not stepping on any "rule toes" relating that out here in public.  I have read the Rules.  It's just a little complement to him.  He has some great posts, including very informative lists, he does a lot of research.  The Best thing about reading here is the Knowledge you can pick up.  No other board has the kind of heavy-hitters that visit here.  And I do mean, not "Steve's Place."  I lurk there sometimes, they watch Smiley Smile dot, and re-post it there!  Before I go, let me say...You are living in one of my very favorite places on earth.  I've never been there, but would love to.  Not being rich is a bitch.  Also, noticed that you have not gotten the won-won-wonderful MIC.  Get it quick!  A thing of beauty for us who have not spent years collecting boots.  Even back in the 80's I figured "they will get this stuff out soon."  Still wrong, there is so much more that could get out.  Like Adult/Child, but I did pop for that boot, and the others in that "Brother Records" series from the mid-80's.  Take care buddy, see you out there on the boards.             Will
1357  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Brian with Jeff Beck Fall Tour Dates on: October 05, 2013, 02:36:56 PM
I got my tickets to see the show in Montclair, NJ on Oct. 16. Sadly, there were still plenty of seats available. Probably partly because the tickets aren't cheap-- not that they should be with those two names, but it's very expensive for us regular folks to get a couple of balcony seats. But people can find money to see McCartney at higher prices, so I guess it's just lack of name recognition or publicity or something.

Doors open at 6:30. Does the show start at 7? That seems early.
Hi Amy,   They just want you in as early as possible to check the merch tables, have a drink or four, then you need snacks...they have many good ideas to keep you busy 'til 8:30.   Wink   Have Fun, it's the show that matters, these days fun costs.
1358  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Brian with Jeff Beck Fall Tour Dates on: October 04, 2013, 05:31:37 PM
Thanks Ontor for extracting the notable quotes from each story...very helpful!

Brian seems slightly easier to talk to these days...he seems to be giving a little bit more thoughtful answers than he has in the past.
Yeah Ontor,  you have been doing a great job checking  all this out for us, adding all the links and whatnot.  Thanks for the effort.  I watched some of your Youtube stuff last night. That's all you playing on Catch A Wave (Blonde Hairdo Mix)? And, Mike Love is Our Kind of People from 8 July brought a smile.  Keep it up.
1359  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Rock And Roll To The Rescue on: October 04, 2013, 02:54:35 PM
Love the percadella mix. Funnily enough, that mix and It's a Beautiful Day were the first 2 songs I played (loud ) in the hire car after arriving in L. A after a long flight from Oz 6 months ago. To me, they seem like great  "welcome to L.A" songs. Cheesy, but get you in the spirit
Now, Now! I'm at the REAL BEACH, the Beach Boy beach!! Wait... Did I get here too late, where are they?  It's just like the beaches in Oz...  Driver, let's check Brian's, head up to Bellagio Road.  wait, some foreign chap says it's his now...the other one, the Brother studio!... gone...The Wilson's old house...what, gone again, at least they left a monument. well - do they live anywhere near here...I got a tour map from some fan online, but it must be forty years old...                                                            smile.  You are in the right place now.  Welcome to the Board Moz Grin       I like both tracks, Al is great on It's a Beautiful Day.  One of my favorite Al tracks.  The soundtrack it's from has a lot of good stuff too.  I even liked the movie.  There's a number by some psychotic oriental chick, that's crazy great.  EDIT:  I went and pulled the record, don't think this will ever get a cd release. Noticed the BB track was produced by Bruce - pretty good for him in 1979.  Two by Eddie Money, remember him? Only one , but a great one by the talented Mr. Nick Lowe - Without Love.  Two by Costello, that had not been released in America yet, but we were all buying the imports anyway.  And the one referred to earlier, Don't you Ever Say No! by Zane Busby.  She had her 15 minutes.  I loved the 70's, the whole decade was, I don't want to say cheese, although some of it was.  Music had a hard time getting on my good side again.  The ship righted, but the best way to say it is 1964 through 1978, for me, and I don't say that too often, where the best years for music.  Then again, it's all of your age.  That has something to do with it.  This is getting too long. Stop.  Subjective excuse, for those that disagree!  I can ramble on sometimes...NEXT POSTER PLEASE!   Razz      Football is about to start.

1361  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Ouch!....Al Opens Up Again. on: October 04, 2013, 01:00:13 PM
This is sooooo tiring. Same old, same old. Remember when Al kissed Mike's ass in the 70s? Ah, those were the days. Everything was more harmonious then.

Not for the Wilsons, it wasn't.  There's always been strife in this band, one way or another.  They're just too old now to let it go anymore, for better or worse.

I was being ironic...
yes Ed, caught that.  The 70's and the 80's was a lot like TV, Drama in the studio, and for sure a sit-com live.
1362  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Who taught Brian how to produce music? on: October 01, 2013, 02:54:59 PM
IMHO Brian is a self-taught producer, a real autodidact.

To observe others giving directions, twiddling knobs, whatever, is one thing.

To assimilate all of that and to add very many unique personal touches to the whole is an entirely different thing.

I see him as a three-star chef de cuisine, whose name will forever be tied to a certain style, or a series of classic menus if you will, oft imitated, never equalled, let alone surpassed.

To ask who taught Brian to produce, is a question that never came up with me, to be honest. For yours truly, it's comparable to asking: who taught Herman Melville or Mark Twain to write?
Good one Don.  Maybe nearest to the truth.  Strange no one has ever asked Brian.
1363  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Brian with Jeff Beck Fall Tour Dates on: October 01, 2013, 12:58:02 PM
I enjoy Jeff.  Jeff is good - I loved his first four Jeff Beck Group titles and BB&A, but cooled to him after that.  Clapton is "workman-like", bit too much soloing on "live" Cream for my tastes -loved Jack! and everything they did in studio. I got it all.  His work with Delaney and Bonnie was stunning (got the "On Tour" box, and well everything they did).  Solo stuff is hit-or-miss...and he's already had his chance to show what he could bring to Brian's music.  But, of the ex-Yardbirds, the real show is Jimmy Page.  He was a session cat, and is on lots of English records un-credited, even Lord Sutch and Heavy Friends. LOL  Zep's I-IV are classics.  Those are the best, but I bought it all.  The MLPS set is beyond beautiful.  He's off-tour because he wants to be.  And he's busy re-mastering the old records yet again...wants an immersion box for each and every one, sticks, medallions, favorite breakfast foods, the whole bit.  Don't think he could bring much to Brian's sound though.   Costello and Buckingham would certainly work.  Brian could do this now, it's not too late.  It doesn't have to be just Beck, and hope it isn't...not on every track, anyway.  Lot's of folks want to "do it with Brian," so you never can tell.  My first choice, in a "dream on" world, would be Sam Beam/Iron and Wine.  He "does" Brian pretty well already.

By the way, who's this Feelsflow guy running rampant on the board today?  I know this guy from Boulder Creek who likes to run rampant with a lotta opinions too.  Probably from the same area....
...yeah, yeah         Hi Mikie, I was making my last post yesterday when you shot through that "gem-of-a-post". Grin  Look down, it was supper bell.  You know, ontor did a great job last Saturday and yesterday, and I guess he will be leading the charge on the tour videos again today.  I've only been posting a week (after lurking these corridors for over three years), and hey I'm trying to get my numbers up.  Other posters who joined at the same time I did have near 300.  Today my goal is to go off on a rant about how I can't get Jon and Ian's new book at a B&M store.  Up here in the sticks, no store within 50 miles will stock it.  And ordering through Amazon...10 lbs doesn't travel well in those plastic bags they call safe ship.  MIC was the only thing all year I got from Amazon that wasn't nicked, bent or broke.  And it only cost me $150.  I hate dealing with returns so much, that Amazon charged me again for two titles - and I still haven't got to sending them back.  The 4-disc Stills box, which yes, shipped in a plastic bag, took me three tries.  btw B&N said they would be glad to order it for full retail -$40.  Yeah, they are looking for folks born under rocks.  Well, sure everyone enjoyed that I busted into this thread to do my rant "here and now."  - Rant Over.  Read on gentle posters.  Smile     I see ontor and the gang are here again.          EDIT:  Update.  This is where it's trapped, so I will have to put this here.  Got my new printer hooked up yesterday, which was why I couldn't send back the stuff, yes, buyer is responsible for returns.  But, called first, and they said forget it!!  They are refunding my money.  Now, if I want, I can take my extra copies (with smashed covers), and sell 'em, trade 'em, or...        My new printer, a HP Officejet 8600 Pro Premium, should help me with my online projects.  Now, all I need to do is get more "tech" savey. Roll Eyes

Beach Boys ?

This is when you get super annoying. You're correcting a guy who will probably never post on here. Who cares that he said Beach Boys?

You have a lot to offer to this board, and the little nitpicking sh*t is annoying.
Not really, this is just among us... That guy doesn't know this board exists.

Yeah, it's a shame they couldn't have made slightly more money opening night! Al needs to buy a new suit, he wears that white one like EVERY DAY or something.
And, even that one is a loaner from Van Dyke. Drumroll

SomeGuyOnFacebook:

"Most bizarre combination of performers, yet a magical night of music. I've never heard the Beach Boys sound as good. Last time I saw them sound good was probably on American Bandstand in the 60's! But what a surprise!! Wilson, looking disheveled and lost whenever he walked (he looked , sang clear on most of his songs. Beach Boys performed amazing harmonies...really amazing...I'd never heard them as good and I've seen them a few times in person and was always disappointed. Last night...WOW. They leave the stage and an entirely difference concert experience begins. Beck is brilliant! Someone in the crowd yells out, "We love you!". Beck shoots back, "PROVE IT!!" He's a master. He and his 4 other band members are precise, dynamic, powerful, subtle, nuanced...I'd always wanted to see him live and he and the band were a stunner. Later the boys and Beck got together for an unusual spiritual sounding tune with stained glass church windows projected onstage at one point. That was beautiful. It was slightly awkward as Beck tried taking lead on some of the BB's poppier fun tunes. He doesn't play that way, but when he did play his own works and the one's mentioned above...fantastic. It was one of the finest and most bizarre performances I've ever seen in 35 years of concert going. I thought this must been what it was like when Hendrix was opening for the Monkees! [...] See the show, you won't regret it. For fans of both it's an audio treat!"
wow...He was there to see Beck, ya think?  Must have been a misguided teen in the 60's.  See ontor, more fun thought for words.

Thanks to Howie for giving us this nice plug in his always informative radio feed. Ian and I have been feeling a little bummed that the book seemed to generate no print reviews, and though there have been some nice online reviews and mentions, getting Howie's "official" endorsement was a nice thing to wake up to this morning.
Jon,  It sounds nice.  Written reviews are not the only problem though.  Your publishers are not putting this in B&M stores.  Heavy books don't travel well up to the sticks were I live.  Kingston, NY has a B&N, but they won't stock it.  EDIT: today, 1 October went in person to see what the deal was.  Said all books stocked are "by corporate"!  Great concept, bookstores that won't stock new books.  Also confirmed it was not in at B&N Poughkeepsie.  That means not in a 50-mile radius.  I will say I saw this coming, and didn't renew my membership with them this year (a $25-a-year rip). Violin END EDIT   I'm a bit disappointed you are limiting some of the set-list info you must have found.  Yes, Eric's site has a lot, you may have even turned what you found over to him.  And, there's setlist.com - but trying to get info on old shows is a hard one, even in this internet world.  Me thinks either nobody that was at the shows will take the time to post, or of course there are those memory problems for us oldsters who were there. LOL Anyway, maybe you could help me find just one.  The Beach Boys at UC Davis, 17 January 1981.  This was a very special show.  Only a week before Dennis got beat up, and he was singing.  They had just gotten that star down in Hollywood.  I'm trying to find my stuff from the time, and did run across that old newspaper clip.  But, I changed coasts back in 1998, and most of my stuff like that is in deep storage.  You know, there is a thread here that questions what 1981 was for the boys - mostly remembered as bad news, and some of it was.  Dennis and all...but I saw them three times and two of Carl's shows - which I thought were Great.  Brian, Carl and Dennis were ALL there  Shocked  The solo deal, Nothing like having Carl right up in your face rockin' Long Promised Road or Heaven, just to name two.  Nobody knew what was going on with them at the time.  Word on the floor that night was that they were breaking up, again this was before every move  made showed up on Youtub, or that it was Carl putting his foot down.  Mike came out all smiles (as always Grin) talking up the 20th year and how special the area was to them.  And, this night had The Honeys to open the concert.  Just how much more special could that make it.  Yes, I know Andrew and others say it was Spring, but Ginger was there, and that is what they were calling themselves.  1981, but they said a new record was ready to roll, they even did some of the Ecstasy tracks...Only took two more years to get it out. Nothing in Beach Boys time Drumroll  If you could please post what you did find out on this, or the San Diego show the night before would be wonderful.  Thanks in advance,       Will/feelsflow

Forget the Yardbirds' tunes - Jeff should do his old Stevie Wonder showcase (from the "orange" album) I Got to Have a Song, with Blondie steppin' out on vocals.   Wait, edit... RubberSoul13, Jeff can sing.  Check the mid-'60's track Hi Ho Silver Lining.  Youtube has a recent version and the original -very mod
