Here She Comes and Hold On Dear Brother sound too similar to each other.
I disagree big time. Funny, I've got a feeling that I'm the only one who thinks that it's not the two Chaplin/Fataar songs, that don't fit with the rest, but the two Dennis-songs and "All this is that". Replace them with stuff like "California ride" and you'd have a very enjoyable rock-album, and nothing would sound too much out of place

I've always wondered just how much of the raw tape(s) was "fixed". Going by AGD's website, it seems like this and the July 4th 1980 show were heavily worked on. On the July 4th video, it's rather obvious that the drums have been overdubbed. That's why they're so loud.
Well, they're so loud because the mix is just terrible. I don't know who did it but it's just bad..... I believe it was Desper. Well, I'm pretty sure that Desper would've done a very good mix. That said, all I can judge from is a DVD-copy of the video. Maybe the sound is better on the "real" product, but on my copy it's just dry, lifeless and in no ways rocking. Love the Knebworth-mix though, that one is very good.

I love "So tough". I'd say it is one of my favorite 70s albums (can't give a number, sorry). But I think that they should've gone on with what side one promised: a very Rock- or R'n'B-album (how about a 70s Wild Honey-album?). Dennis' songs and "All this is that" (which I all love) don't fit in there. There are certainly better albums as a whole (Holland for example) but I like this one very much.
Oh, and I love the title

I'm in favor of them trying it. Even if Carl and/or Dennis were still alive, in 2009, the harmony blend would not be the same anyway. All of their voices have changed over the years.
The blend wasn't already the same when Dennis was still alive. Brian's and Dennis' voices changed dramatically around the mid-70s and also Mike's went through a change, becoming very nasal and losing some deepnes imo. I'd even say that, except for a few lucky occasions, the magic was gone by '76/'77

But I was always wondering why the Beach Boys played "RockīnīRoll woman" during their 1968 tour...
Probably inspired by Buffalo Springfield with whom they toured together. You know, to me it doesn't make too much sense to sell the rights to a song you have written, 'cause in time you'll probably make much more money if you keep the rights for yourself (and the song is any good )

Well... fer one thing the American Band video hails from 1985, and isn't out of print at all... as for the claims that Carl & Denny sold their songs to the Springfield... Thanks. I thought I was going crazy because I'd never hear about that....

At the end of the main set, before the encore Mike says something like "We are going back to California where the surfs up and the suns out!" then one of the Beach Boys (Carl?) yells something like "SURFS OUT!". Am I hearing this right?
The rainy England weather seemed to be a source of consternation with Mike on the Live in London LP as well.
It's Al yelling "Sun's out". I guess, no matter where you are, a Beach Boys concert and rain just doesn't seem to fit very good

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=84HYDHX9QLUThis video should be familiar to most of you, but I was irritated by the description the poster wrote: Rare awesome tour footage including a 2 minute cover of Buffalo Springfield's classic "Rock and Roll Woman". Plus tour clip highlights from the bands 1968 European tour. Clip is taken from the rare out of print 1988 documentary "An American Band". It's just coming to light that this track and several other tracks may actually have been composed by Dennis Wilson & Carl Wilson or Brian WIlson and the track and copyrights sold in order to recoupe losses the band were going through from sluggish sales of "Smiley SMiLE, Friends, Wild Honey & 20/20". It also just was recently discovered that Dennis Wilson actually did co-write "You are so Beautiful" with Billy Preston in 1974. But who knows..Either way it's a great version of this track. Anyone like to comment?

I just thought he added a vocal that wasn't in the studio cut.
Yes, that's what he did. But that's more singing than he did for the rest of the concert, excluding "Surfer girl" and "Sloop John B".

I can't quite say for sure, but I've heard the Good Timin for Knebworth and Brian messes up, slightly but noticeably, on the first chorus and although there is a lot of overdubbing on the album/DVD, I'm pretty sure all of the lead vocals are completely live. In fact I'm damn sure of that, as I remember Boyd or Linnett saying it on this site. So I think they didn't include it because Brian messed up.
What did Brian mess up? I've heard the version, and I don't remember any mistakes in it. Same here. I just listened to "Good timin'" and without paying to much attention, I didn't recognize any big mistake. On the other hand, the quality of course is not great and maybe it would be better to hear on a official release

So, why exactly was GT left off of the Knebworth-DVD? I heard the performance, which is very good imo and you'd have another Brian-vocal in there. And what about the other songs? Although I could live without a live version of "Some of your love", there are other songs that would've been nice to hear/see

All we need to do is...
1. Get a great producer
4. Get somebody to replace Carl's vocals
How about for 1) James Guercio and for 4) Peter Cetera Well, if Al doesn't hurry up, they might have a recording with Carl.... (Don't fight the sea) Christian Love sounds great btw and often very reminiscent of Carl Wouldn't mind him and Matt Jardine filling out the Boys' blend

Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: BW BB Piano sound
|

Simple. Brian had a piano in his house that was out of tune. I believe the story goes that he told the piano tuner exactly how he wanted it tuned, and this was the end result. I believe the brand of the piano is a Chickering (sp?).
What I found particularly fascinating is a boot featuring a reel-to-reel tape recorded by the Wilson brothers as kids... this is the tape with the Surfin' demos and such. The piano featured on this tape is out of tune in nearly the same fashion as Brian's circa 1967 piano. Perhaps this is the sound that Brian grew up with, and he purposely sought to replicate it.
i'm not so sure that it's just an out of tune piano. Listen to the piano on "Let The Wind Blow". It's a real distinct, "thick" sound. It has a big echo, to the point where it almost vibrates through the whole piano. I have never heard any other musician or group that has that certain piano sound. It's one of the reasons why I love the studio work of The Beach Boys. I love the bass-sounds that Brian gets from a piano (and Dennis too for that matter, never heard a pianoperformance by Carl). I always wondered how they sound as thick (like you said). Then I tried to play the bassnotes in two octaves, like a C' and a C and that came pretty near. It's not that easy for me though to hit the right keys everytime when you change to other notes. I'll bet you've heard some Carl piano performances without knowing it...he played piano on lots of stuff (sometimes electric, sometimes acoustic, sometimes both), like Long Promised Road, Feel Flows, Trader, probably Leaving This Town and the live versions of Surf's Up, Wild Honey, and probably Let The Wind Blow. Also apparently Carl played the piano on Keepin ' The Summer Alive (the studio version). Yeah, absolutely, what I meant though was solo-piano performances. Sorry for being unclear
