8651  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Jan & Dean on: September 18, 2009, 02:30:57 PM
Jan & Dean should be in the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame.

They're Not???!!!!

No, although they had more hits than many others who are in there. And their influence especially on the californian music scene can't be denied. But oh well, record business and J&D have a long and hard relationship.....  police

Quote
Forgive me for stating the obvious, but.....I think Jan & Dean (especially Jan) suffer(ed) from the same problem that plagued Brian Wilson and The Beach Boys, which is the subject matter of the majority of their best songs. It's hard for the casual listener, or actually most listeners, to look past the lyrics - because they're so visual and entertaining - and to focus on the brilliant arrangements and production. Therefore, Jan & Dean and their music never got the credit they deserved. Yeah, they sold their share of records, but in particularly Jan, never got the credit or recognition he should've.

Right on. And the fact that Jan didn't get some of his writing credits didn't help neither (the credits were restored in the 90s I believe). Plus because of Jan's accident and the trouble surroundig "Save for a rainy day" "Carnival of sound" and all the contractual stuff closed the dorr for Jan&Dean to step ito the psychedelic or "serious" rock music.

I also think that the last decades of being a nostalgia act, trying too hard to cover the Beach Boys doing the same, were destroying too, to their legacy. But it kept Jan going and that was a good thing

8654  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Does anyone of you know the Beach Boys Manager? on: September 18, 2009, 12:12:12 PM

Of course since the WOTS-podcast, if not earlier, I have some doubts about what Bruce says when it comes to Mike. Anyway, I wasn't there....

Care to elaborate?

Well, nothing special. It's just that Bruce kinda seems to praise everything Mike's doing to the sky, no matter how unimportant it might be. For the "It's ok"-podcast he mentions how great Mike's voice is, because he can sing nasal and soft. You know that kind of things. Just pointless stuff like that. Check it out at 6:49 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i6g_zC1gU5Y&feature=PlayList&p=35A937B098381DEF&index=10
Don't get me wrong. Mike has a great voice but it's got nothing to do with singing nasal or soft; everyone can do that.
And of course the famous "all around Mr. cool"-quote from EH. There's a lot of those things when Bruce talks about Mike and to me it doesn't sound very honest at all. But again, that's just me and it's no try at a Mike-bashing, just my feelings
8655  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Jan & Dean on: September 18, 2009, 11:53:57 AM
The only reservation I have about Carnival of Sound is that it includes the song "Only A Boy"...unless that song was meant to be taken ironically.

I don't think it was meant to be taken ironically at all. To me it always seemed like Jan thought he could outdo Staff Sergeant Barry Sadler.

Well, wtf, you can take it ironically or not. The production is very good and the music isn't that bad either.
8656  Smiley Smile Stuff / The Beach Boys Media / Re: Brian, Carnie & Wendy newspaper article on: September 18, 2009, 04:50:15 AM
Two questions about Bells of Madness: Who wrote it? Is it Carnie that sings?

I believe it was written by Brian, Wasserman and Sam Phillips (the singer, not the legend). And yes, it is Carnie singing

What is the tracklist of the US Rubber soul?
8658  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Does anyone of you know the Beach Boys Manager? on: September 18, 2009, 04:46:38 AM

Oh, and Brian being the bands manager in the 64-66 period is interesting. I don't suppose he did any actual managerial stuff during the time, but still.

Bruce mentions that Mike did a lot of managing for the BBs in the early 70s in this interview: http://smileysmile.net/board/index.php/topic,7804.0.html

Of course since the WOTS-podcast, if not earlier, I have some doubts about what Bruce says when it comes to Mike. Anyway, I wasn't there....
8659  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Jan & Dean on: September 17, 2009, 05:20:39 AM
Awesome news !!

J&D were great. Many people don't take them serious, but listening to Jan's songs and arrangements you'll find a lot of complex, fantastic stuff. Brian was very inspired and influenced by Berry's productions. Say what you want, but Jand & Dean were a great musical act. Unfortunately for far too short a time.
"Batman" has got to be one of the best albums of '66 imo and "Carnival of sound" would've been even one step higher.
8660  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Last known pictures of Dennis and Carl on: September 16, 2009, 05:17:57 PM
I believe I already posted it in this thread but for those who haven't seen it, you should check out: http://www.igotaround.com/  If I understand it correctly these picture-compilations are by former employees of the Beach Boys. So, certainly there's not the last photo of Carl, but nice concert shots from the 90s

IŽd say - Mr. Rocker you are a dreamer  Grin..

Just for information, I'm serious. That would be a professional way to celebrate the 50th anniversary and make money with stuff that probably wouldn't sell if it was released next year for example
8662  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: 50th anniversary Releases on: September 16, 2009, 04:20:30 PM
OK, we've heard about the Carnegie Hall 72 CD/DVD release, and a possible Dennis 71-73 solo track collection.

With the success of the Beatles stereo and mono box sets, how about a boxed set of all the albums, remastered, in stereo (with the mono albums remixed in stereo where the tapes exist) and in the original mono, for the first time ever on CD for the Surfin' USA through All Summer Long albums?  And include a Rarities/Outtakes CD with the box as well.

Maybe they're saving the Complete Capitol singles Vol 2 for the 11/11/2011?

IMHO the best thing would be if they do a DVD-box with various (unreleased) concerts for the fans in a limited edition and sell the DVDs individual for the non-hardcorefans. Release (at least some of) the concerts on CD too, plus the whole '65 Chicago-conert (to have something that represents the classic Beach Boys as a live act, incl. Brian).

Then of course the PBS-special with Beach Boys reunion (but please (!!!) without any guest stars, except maybe BBs-offspring like Carl B., Wendy, Carnie, Michael, Christian, etc) for either a single song for each act or for the rousing finale, which will probably include "Barbara friggin' Ann".

And then it's time to release the new Beach Boys studio album on Capitol and for once in the Beach Boys' carreere do it right! Make announcements in newspapers, radio, internet. Get some tastefully (!!!) stories, about how work was done in the studio and on the road and how the songs were composed back in the days.
Once just let the music speak and don't try to make some fun-in-the-sun-nostalgia thing out of it and also not a Pet Sounds-thing, because then the same problem will come up that's causing the underappreciation of the post-PS-music.

Let some famous and respected guys write in music-magazines about the greatness of their music (but don't compare them to the Beatles in every sentence or mention how much McCa was influenced by Pet Sounds) and get the BBs on Letterman, Conan o'Brian, etc. etc.

Again, this one time, please do it right. See what kind of potential is liyng there. Get rid of the hawaiian shirts and put the boys into some dark tuxedos or whatever and make music (from the early garage-surfrock to the big stuff) without any waves on a screen or other nautical orientated stageshows. For the surf-part, the band should be just basic and the more complex the music gets, the bigger the band. You could use Mike and Bruce's guys for the early stuff with David Marks on leadguitar of course and then use Brian's band for the Pet Sounds,etc-era music. Make it like a musical that shows the different eras of the band in music. No talking or acting or whatever.
Just do something new and maybe innovative. Don't try to do what did good for other bands and reunions. So no "We'll make a Beach Boys version of the Beatles' "Love" " or whatsoever.

This would be the last chance to make the Beach Boys' name shine again for the public. Knowing the history of the band though, I guess it won't turn out very good and tasteful....

It shouldn't be so hard if you do it with some love....... (well, and Wil-son of course)

It's credited to Jardine/B. Wilson/Love.

Thanks ! My booklet just says Wilson/Jardine/Love, that's why I wondered
8666  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Where does \ on: September 15, 2009, 10:26:34 AM
So was HCD written by Brian, Mike and Al or Carl, etc? Always wondered about that.
And I think that HCD is a great production and cool song, no matter who did it. I remember being blown away by it when I first heard it. The singing and arrangement are superb.

Why was the title changed to Roll Plymouth Rock on BWPS ?

DYLW probably was always nothing more than a working title, so if Smile was released in '67 it would've had a different name too. I guess there's nothing more to it....
8669  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Darlin' by Redwood on: September 14, 2009, 04:29:18 PM
This is the eeriest thing ever. I was JUST coming on here to ask who was singing that, because I couldn't recognize the voices. It's just so random, I can't believe someone made a post about it just as I was about to.

So thanks for posting it! It's like you read my mind or something.

I learned alot from Spector....  3D

Thanks AGD for the answer, but I can't find "Darlin" on it  http://www.amazon.com/Celebrate-Three-Night-Story-1965-1975/dp/B000002OQV/ref=sr_1_7?ie=UTF8&s=music&qid=1252971308&sr=1-7
8670  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: BWPS: which of the new lyrics were actually old lyrics? on: September 14, 2009, 04:28:19 PM
Wha...? So, DYLW is a *different* song none of us heard?

No, he might've connected that title with another song, but that doesn't meant we haven't heard it. Maybe "Look" was DYLW (just for an example)
8671  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Darlin' by Redwood on: September 14, 2009, 12:22:18 PM
Dont know if this has been officially released or not but I saw this a couple weeks ago....

Yeah thanks, that was an official release on a boxset (as I was told) or something. But what about "Darlin" ?
8672  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Darlin' by Redwood on: September 14, 2009, 12:07:19 PM
Was Redwood's recording of "Darlin'" ever released? I know about "Time to get alone"....

Am I the first to, um, notice a wicked (possibly Freudian) slip o'the pen in the actual threat title?

Cheesy Cheesy
8674  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: The KTSA album on: September 14, 2009, 04:42:20 AM
I was in a rehearsal for a gig with Nelson and Probyn yesterday and I deliberately tortured Probyn by playing "Oh Darlin'" on the piano between songs (and Probyn didn't recognize it, dammit!)

I've been playing it myself lately on piano quite a bit. Like I said, I think the song is really good, but everything on the released version is wrong, everything !
8675  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: BWPS: which of the new lyrics were actually old lyrics? on: September 13, 2009, 01:52:12 PM
Page 27 of LLVS, As follows:

I got a sneak preview of one of the tracks the previous night when Dennis played me a piano version of one track, 'Child Of The Man', a cowboy song, and then gave me the throwaway line of the year-'And this is a prayer I'm working on for it!!'

So either Dennis was wrong, or the reporter got things messed up, or both. Or, CIFOTM was a cowboy song early on and changed later, which I don't believe, IMO.

Sorry, but I don't understand the line "...this is a prayer I'm working on for it". What's that about? Dennis writing stuff for Smile?
