So was HCD written by Brian, Mike and Al or Carl, etc? Always wondered about that. And I think that HCD is a great production and cool song, no matter who did it. I remember being blown away by it when I first heard it. The singing and arrangement are superb.

I was in a rehearsal for a gig with Nelson and Probyn yesterday and I deliberately tortured Probyn by playing "Oh Darlin'" on the piano between songs (and Probyn didn't recognize it, dammit!)
I've been playing it myself lately on piano quite a bit. Like I said, I think the song is really good, but everything on the released version is wrong, everything !

Page 27 of LLVS, As follows:
I got a sneak preview of one of the tracks the previous night when Dennis played me a piano version of one track, 'Child Of The Man', a cowboy song, and then gave me the throwaway line of the year-'And this is a prayer I'm working on for it!!'
So either Dennis was wrong, or the reporter got things messed up, or both. Or, CIFOTM was a cowboy song early on and changed later, which I don't believe, IMO.
Sorry, but I don't understand the line "...this is a prayer I'm working on for it". What's that about? Dennis writing stuff for Smile?

I remember a newspaper article from the early '90s (after the Landy era but before Brian married Melinda) about how Brian and Carl had gotten together at a hotel in the L.A. area after several years of not speaking. The memorable thing about the article was that it said that the two brothers ended up at a piano in the hotel and were singing songs from the Wild Honey album (I remember "Aren't You Glad" being mentioned specifically).
Thanks for writing that. I never heard about it. It's funny, because in some way, "Wild honey" to me sounds like the last "innocent" Beach Boys album. That may sound strange but I can't come up with a better description. It just feels like they all were as excited and happy as in the years before. "Friends", although a very nice album, has that adult-feel imo. But WH is like they all had a ball just being together, making music and having no problems with each other (although that might be wrong). So, although SmileySmile and WH sound very different from the stuff that came before, to me the parting line in the classic Beach Boys-group comes after WH There was still a lot of group feeling on Friends and Sunflower. The real big change didn't happen until after Surf's Up. I know what you mean, but still everything after WH feels differently to me. Maybe it's because of the other guys starting to write their own songs or whatever, but something, that I can't put into words as it seems, definitely changed after Wild Honey. It's not really "group feeling" I'm talking about, maybe just the overall feeling of how the music was made. Maybe they still had enough confidence from the succeses of '66 when they made WH, when they did Friends they were washed up. Sorry that I can't explai better what I mean. It's really just a feeling. I don't know if I could even explain it in german

Regarding the "Rock, rock, roll" vocals, I asked myself a few days ago if the Smile-project was the beginning of Brian's, let me call it "obsession", of putting those words into his rock-songs. I mean you here it everywhere, "Rock and roll music" right through "Proud Mary" and even finding it's way onto "Goin' home". He did it in the hotel-jam from the early 90s and probably other times that I don't remember or don't even know of

I'm reminded of Todd Sucherman's great luck.
I don't need to be reminded of that.... New to me also! Apart from what's on Youtube, I don't know the official setlist. This appearance on Mike Douglas must rank as the most songs the band played live on a "talk" show! Yes, and it really was a decent performanceMaybe there pops up some other stuff on youtube

Helen Schneider sings "Cuddle up". Thanks to Roland from the german message board for the link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hL8iyaM60rEI don't think it's very good, but interesting to hear such a rare song being covered you just know that Denny, had he and his vocal chords survived into the eighties, would have been all over the power ballad thing. I kinda like it, not a patch on the original, but a good find! I love power ballads myself, but Schneider's singing here just doesn't make it for me

According to Brian, his version of "Heaven" was arranged, recorded and mixed in one day, so basically everything is a one-take wonder and not a lot of auto-tuning or sweetening. Take that for what it's worth.
That's new to me. Thanks for the info. But I won't change my opinion very much about it. I want to make it clear though, that I'm not trying to dis this recording or the idea behind it. I always love it, when Brian puts up recordings on his website, no matter if there are faults in there or not. It would be another thing if this was an official release. Still, from a musician's point, and that's all I'm trying to say, it's not that great.

Brian has performed "Heaven" live, although not as many times as "Forever."
Brian also recorded his own version of "Heaven" recently(?) which IMO is his best lead vocal since 1970. Sorry, but I very much disagree with that. That vocal wasn't very good (although there are worse ones for sure). TLOS features alot of good leads by Brian
