I know that this isn't the BW biopic casting thread, but I've heard that the role of Phil Cohen will be assigned to 'Glum' from the old Gulliver's Travels cartoon series.

Just a few thoughts from me...
1) What on earth does Steve Hoffman have to do with this??? Is he even involved in this
Smile
project?
2) That "I want it TUESDAY!" attitude that's been discussed -- that's exactly the logic that resulted in the version of Pac-Man for Atari 2600. Yeah, if any kind of delay means improved quality, I can wait a little longer.
3) I think we can all agree -- once this project is finally released, Phil Cohen is not allowed to hear it, touch it, see it, or read any post-release discussions about it. After all, its existence would contradict everything he apparently knows.

But, obviously, unanticipated problems developed.
Evidence for this sweeping statement, please, and "it's not out yet" is ineligible.
Or to be less polite about it, and frankly, this is the only answer your post deserves - bullshit.

1 - Nope, AFAIK (and I think we'd have heard by now) ... but he wants to be.
2 - 'Xactly.
3 - Sounds like a plan to me.

While we're on the subject of Steve Hoffman, he was one of the first to predict that Capitol wouldn't release The Beach Boys "Smile" recordings, a prediction made before Capitol's box set announcement......a prediction that he still stands by today.
[/quote]
Has Mr. Hoffman made a comment about this recently? I've been following the thread on his board fairly closely (as I'd bet several others here have), and I don't recall him commenting for awhile.
Also, "Obviously, unanticipated problems developed"? What would we expect the timeline to be for a project like this? March 2011 wasn't
that
long ago, was it?
By the way, not trying to pick on anyone....i swear! I'm not shocked that there is still some skepticism, given the overall history (and despite the recent news/promos/reports....which - I must say - are pretty darn compelling).

Phil,
Do you know that c-man is Craig Slowinski, one of the
four
people mentioned in the Capitol press release as officially working on the boxset? How much of a confirmation would you need to stop "Chicken Little"-ing? I'm curious.

Actually not. I order pizza online, and have the exact same ingredients every time(Green Peppers, Onions, Portabella Mushrooms, Black Olives & Tomatoes)
Do you then sit there muttering to yourself "The pizza's not coming, my order's been cancelled, the pizza joint has been shut down, the delivery boy's probably had a crash.....etc .." until it arrives?

Or nothing better than to spend huge amounts of time preparing something they know they aren't going to release. I mean, all for differing opinions, but Phil that doesn't even make sense! It's poor business to spend hundreds of thousands of dollars, at least, paying everybody from Mark Linett to the art department to the engineers as they audition tapes and jst not release the thing because, ooh, the fans are talking about it?!
Well, they spent a hell of a lot of money back in the 60's and then scrapped the project - there have also been plans throughout the years, not without costs, I believe???

What is the deal with Steve Hoffman? It is very odd; the guy is presumably a talented, knowledgeable and experienced chap working in a rather specialised profession...and then he comes out with all that nonsensical poppyc*ck about Smile being cancelled
Oh well.

Small correction - Capitol didn't scrap
Smile
back in 1967: dude called Wilson did. As for the posited - but not officially announced - releases down the years (1967-1997), as none of them got past the "let's have a listen to the tapes and maybe compile a reference cassette" stage, the outlay, if any, was minimal. The forthcoming release of
Smile
has been
officially
announced twice - in 1966 and 2011.

That's pretty good, good jab.
Look Phil I for one, don't really mean to pick on you.
More I am so puzzled by your views, like those people
who construct elaborate fantasy lives and alter ego's.
They were abducted by Aliens and there is a secret underground
of which they are the King.
I am not a big fan of record companies, no sir no way, I found them
to be dishonest, arrogant, lazy, often incompetent. The Beatles sued
Capitol for Fifty million dollars, for selling uncounted records out the back door.
My own experiences with them as an artist I was usually lied to, cheated
and treated badly.
But they aren't lying about this, record companies are on the ropes, and the
days of wine and roses are over, they are fighting for cost effective ways, to just
survive, and this box set is a brilliant example of doing something great. There
are also some great record men, historically. I don't know who the bright lightbulbs
at Capitol are, but I am sure they have some sharp people.
I think what Mark Linett and the others are doing in the studio is heroic.
The tedium of looking at sound wave graphs, and listening to one beat for an hour
concerning oneself about all the sonic issues.
There are tedious things that go in recording studios for tracking or mixing or editing
I get hives just thinking about it. Don't ever say to me, "come on by, we're getting drum sounds
at 11 AM" I'll hurl right on the spot. There is a reason why John Lennon liked making a whole
album in a week. And it had to do with the tedium of all that.
Mark Linnet is a hero, sure it's a dream once in a lifetime project to compile SMiLE wow
but it's not a cakewalk, its tedious.
the idea that all these people are spending what ? a couple million bucks, to search.,.compile
edit, mix. promote, discuss, is crazy, of course the music is coming out
The pressure on MArk Linnet must be tremendous, the cost, the Beach boys fans , Brian Wilson's
opinion, the record company breathing down his neck, expectations,
This is not a drill folks.
You can believe whatever you want Phil, and I don't mean to be rude to you
you seem to know a lot about music history and , have a love for classic pop and rock
but your views on the current SMiLE project make you seem like a nutcase, thats not an insult
it's just an observation.
Finally in terms of the Hoffman forum. That could have been a great place, except for a couple
of things, One Steve Hoffman and his "gorts" (moderators) are very controlling, egotistical and
hypocritical. For example they had Ken Scott the Beatles engineer (and hit producer for David Bowie/Supertramp)
actually discussing white album sessions and who did what, an actual participant! Long story short, he made a blue
remark as a joke, Hoffman had just done the same thing a few posts before, they censored Scotts entire commentary
demeaned him like he was a piece of dirt, Scott felt insulted, complained he had done nothing wrong, never to go back to
that forum again. One of the main Beatle engineers talking about first hand accounts in the studio, and Steve Hoffmans moderators
ran him off, because , it was more important to show how powerful they were. Even though Hoffman had started it with a slightly
blue remark..and was the actual cause. As Andrew Doe pointed out, Hoffman claimed recently, that SMILE was going to be cancelled
because people were contacting the record company begging to know if the SMILE rumors were true...and he (Hoffman) singlehandedly
talked Capitol out of Cancelling the box, because fans had disturbed the record company. Oh give me a break! what crapola...by the way
that thread was deleted shortly after...just as if it had never existed...because they needed to remove proof that Hoffman had made such a stupid claaim.
The other thing about Hoffman,.. is they have a cabal of snotty posters, who attack people and are cruel and rude, and condescending
and they are thick as thieves with the gorts, either because they make financial donations, or they have eyes for each other, or whatever
the reason is..they bash people. ridicule behave cruelly without reason and are protected by Hoffmans henchmen.
It gets to a point where the Hoffman board has zero credibility, and gets minus zero points for behaving in a civil fashion
and the out of control gorts run off the cool people like Ken Scott and countless others...making a sicko club for bullies.

Actually, there were a few times(a few years ago) when Papa John's Pizza took two and a half hours to deliver(despite being a 10 to 12 minute drive away), because they didn't know how to find my neighborhood. I waited a few years before ordering again, and now, they seem to be able to find my town, and they can deliver in 30 to 40 minutes.

Actually, Ken Scott was banished from Hoffman's forums(electronically blocked from posting) and I was too. a few years ago.
As I say, when Capitol made their "Smile" box announcement back in March, they obviously didn't expect there to be any hang-ups. But history has shown , bringing Beach Boys archival product to the market can be a prolonged process.

But back to the subject. For this box set to be in record stores by early October, it would have to be in the manufacturing stage within the next 2 to 3 weeks. That is unlikely. You guys, who so fervently believe that The Beach Boys & Capitol are going to release this box set, have nothing better to do than to keep talking about me, picking on me or demonizing me. If there's no box set at year's end, I envision that some of you will try to blame me for the project's demise, claiming that my impatience caused the compilers to throw in the towel, and abandon the project. In reality, any decision to abandon the project will be forced by one or more of the surviving Beach Boys themselves. I don't think that this box set is really worth all the effort that people on this forum(including, in the past, myself) having been putting into it. The games (that Capitol & The Beach Boys have played with the fans) have drained much of the potential pleasure from the box set, even if it is someday released. While I still do an occasional post here, in the future, my CD collecting efforts will be directed elsewhere.

But, obviously, unanticipated problems developed.
Evidence for this sweeping statement, please, and "it's not out yet" is ineligible.
Or to be less polite about it, and frankly, this is the only answer your post deserves - bullsh*t.
Bump. Seems to have been ignored for some reason.

If the process of creating this box set wasn't beset by some sort of permission problems or hang-ups(and I've mentioned several possibilities, and stated that it could be some, all or none of those reasons), then we'd either be listening to the box set now, or celebrating at the announcement of a release date, and preordering at our favorite record shop or online dealer. But none of those things are happening.

I Like bongos. Perhaps I am long winded and only semi articulate.
Thankfully I don't post that often. from your point of view friend.
based on everything I have been reading, I would expect some sort of
update or tracklist or release date, perhaps within a month or so
give or take..
I am excited by the one fellow saying there is mind blowing
unknown stuff, and how great it's gonna be.
Maybe Andrew Doe will let a tidbit slip pretty soon.

Wow. Your post is full of hard evidence to back up your claim. Sorry I doubted you before.
Ok. Well, now that that's settled, on to more pressing matters.....does anyone here dig worms?

Hey Phil
... if you could invent a
'SMiLE Pizza'
what would you put on it? Now there's a 12" (or 16") box I'd like to see!
Olive to say Da Da
Our Prawns
Vegetables
Pineapple (In Blue Hawaii)
Do You Like Mushrooms
Sunny Down Sausage
Mrs O'Leary's Beef
The Old Mozzarella Painter
He Gives Cheeses
Salami's Up
Dance Margarita
