oh I love you smile-boxset dreamers.

But certainly, they're becoming less lovable every day.
Less loveable as you try to kill the dream, Phil. Wink

Then, dream on guys, if that's what brings you happiness.
The really sad thing is Phil that since rumours began of the new box coming out you have been saying it wont come out! I have my own theories about your stance on this. Over at LMS there was a link posted to some of your bootleg work http://bigozine2.com/roio/?p=702. I am sure you have put heaps of work into it and are very proud of it but the truth is as Capitol records and the living members of the band have said it's coming out this year. You are wrong and have been wrong since you said it will never happen! It is happening and when it does all the money you spent on bootleg tapes will be worth very little.

As it turns out, Al Jardine started a hoax, which he has now retracted. “Smile” is not going to be released officially. The “Smile” that you get on Big O is the best “Smile” you’ll ever get.

By Philip Cohen on Feb 15, 2011

Yes, but when does that quote date to? It is from a time, when it truly DID appear that Al had started a hoax, then retracted it.
And...if there ever is an official "Smile" box, I hope that it IS better than my fan mix, any "Sea of Tunes" or "Vigotone" CD or anyone's fan mix, and that it includes some stuff that we haven't heard before.

I bet you're a pain when you order pizza.

Actually not. I order pizza online, and have the exact same ingredients every time(Green Peppers, Onions, Portabella Mushrooms, Black Olives & Tomatoes)

Sounds a lot like the pizza eaten by the Mrs. and me last night!  Amy's organic brand, popped it in the oven and it was ready in about 14 minutes.  Life is full of simple pleasures, and pizza is certainly one of them!  As for the SMiLE box set...it will indeed be a pleasure, but one of a decidedly more complex nature...and it will be around a lot longer than the average pizza!

You"re not a vegetarian are you Phil?

Nah. I ate at Burger King tonight!

It's not really Phil's comments that make this thread annoying, it's mostly the people who drag them out and insist on arguing about it. This thing is probably going to be released, though I wouldn't be surprised if things changed. In any event shouldn't we be hearing something soon? Like soon soon? I really am expecting an announcement any day now, it doesn't seem like they can put it off much longer if this thing is really happening.

Seriously, you guys should just let Phil post what he wants and just go with it. Yes he's repeating himself, but so are you everytime you argue with him. Hell, this thread is little more than repeats, it's not like we've had the same arguments a million times about all the standard topics.

I think that I've been spending too much time in front of my computer's LCD screen, getting fuzzy-eyed(and a headache) debating with you guys. I need to go back to the part of my home where I have my Hifi and video equipment, and focus my effort on LISTENING to music(though, for the time-being, someone else's music.....not Beach Boys).

Enjoy all your dreams. May your "Smile" Dreams become reality.

I've read Mr.Doe's most recent post on the Hoffman forum. Forget about your plan to strangle my kittens(my most recent[very old] cat disappeared into the night on an especially cold January night in 2010, and never returned), and I don't have any kids either.

Sorry about your cat. Female cats are reincarnated human girls who died in youth. Whenever I play with a girl-cat, I dream of it, and the dream-cat turns into a dream-girl. And we make sweet lovin' when the sun goes down.

I think what Mark Linett and the others are doing in the studio is heroic.
The tedium of looking at sound wave graphs, and listening to one beat for an hour
concerning oneself about all the sonic issues.

There are tedious things that go in recording studios for tracking or mixing or editing
I get hives just thinking about it. Don't ever say to me, "come on by, we're getting drum sounds
at 11 AM" I'll hurl right on the spot.  There is a reason why John Lennon liked making a whole
album in a week. And it had to do with the tedium of all that.

Mark Linnet is a hero, sure it's a dream once in a lifetime project to compile SMiLE wow
but it's not a cakewalk, its tedious.

You have some good points in your post, but the above is utterly BS IMO. Some people, me included, LOVE to do everything you mentioned above - there's nothing more rewarding than getting that perfect drum sound! Mark is doing an amazing job, and I give him all respect for taking on the project. But a hero? Dude, he is LUCKY! I'll tell you what's heroic; heroic is when you have to go into the studio and do the aformentioned - only to crap music. Now, that's heroic. And sadly, that's pretty standard today. So, Mark getting to work with the music he loves, not to mention something as epic as SMiLE, that's just a dream job.

Yeah well to a certain point I have to backtrack, and accept your point.
Things that are tedious to me, are less tedious or even fun for the professional
sound engineer. That's why you are sound engineers (in part) because things
that drive anyone else nuts, are just part of the job to sound guys.

I also don't know exactly what he is spending his time doing, or how much support
staff he has for the grunt work. Or if he using a combinatin of analog and digital gear
or what.

Even so I can think of a lot of things even most engineers don't enjoy
finding the bad wire in the patch bay. Aligning tape machines, going over
and over the same bit six thousand times. Reconing speakers. Soldering guns,
malfunctions, ghosts in the machine, losing focus at four am after a 17 hour session

But yes getting to work on SMILE instead of some hip hop group
or Giles Martin getting to remix the Beatles, instead of working with
a bad  metal band at some hole in the wall

You make a good point. It's still heroic, Capitol breathing down your neck
making sure Brian likes it, long hours , glitches, deciding what is the right thing
to do in such an unusual circumstance.

Maybe your'e right maybe it's not heroic and he is just lucky getting paid
to mess around with all the SMiLE material instead of taking a job with some hiphop
group that don't even play an instrument and bring guns int the studio, and you aren't
sure if they are gonna pay you or shoot you.

Of course I unhappily once had to do a gig with Arthur Lee, so I know all about
bums with guns and morons.

Yeah, I think that's the point, if you are a sound engineer by profession, you will enjoy these things more, especially when you get such awesome source material. I'm sure he is using a combination of analogue and digital gear, you know, editing in PT, then running stuff through outboard gear, perhaps some tape saturation, I don't know, probably.
I am both (writer and engineer), and while I prefer writing over engineering, I still love the latter!
And don't get me wrong, editing, tuning vocals, beatmapping, etc can be tedious (and yes alligning tape machines is an evil necessity Wink - especially after no sleep for x amount of hours, no doubt there, but my point was, like I (we) said, it's at least not some 'music' from some crappy hip-hop hooligans from Birmingham (of all places), but amazing, legendary, beautiful music from Brian Wilson anno 1967. And he gets paid doing it! You get my point Smiley

The term "Mr." is used since I don't know you personally. Would you deny that the most important information concerning the "Smile" box is known only to Mark Linett, Alan Boyd, Capitol Records executives & The Beach Boys? You still didn't answer the question: is Mr.Reum involved in the "Smile" box? His post on the Hoffman forum didn't say that he is involved in the "Smile" box. He only stated that he had been involved in the "Pet Sounds Sessions" project, that he had been asked to sign a confidentiality agreement for THAT project, and that participants in the "Smile" box had been asked to sign similar documents.

There are many questions I've posed you gone unanswered: as for "the most important information concerning the "Smile" box [being] known only to Mark Linett, Alan Boyd, Capitol Records executives & The Beach Boys", well, you keep on thinking that if it makes you happy.

I've read Mr.Doe's most recent post on the Hoffman forum. Forget about your plan to strangle my kittens(my most recent[very old] cat disappeared into the night on an especially cold January night in 2010, and never returned), and I don't have any kids either.

Humour not your strong suit, huh ?

It's not really Phil's comments that make this thread annoying, it's mostly the people who drag them out and insist on arguing about it.

Check back a few days and you'll see exactly the reverse is true - Phil vanishes, fuss dies down, we get back to rational - if at times silly - discourse then flop !, the wet blanket of "won't be released, what's the problem" descends again. I offered not to respond if he refrained from posting his deadening gloom. His response was to state once more, "not going to happen".

Finally in terms of the Hoffman forum. That could have been a great place, [...]
Here are some people who post on the Hoffman board; do they sound familiar?
Andrew G. Doe
Jon Hunt
Peter Reum

Steve Espinola

Ken Worthing
David Prokopy

Andrew Sandoval

Well certainly some good and decent and sharp knowlegable
people still post and or read posts at Hoffman's forum.

I forgot George Dussault.

edit

All the people I mentioned either post under their real name, or they don't make an effort to hide it. I think it would be appropriate if you sign your post with your real name.
