I guess we'll find out when the October date is announced in September. Ugh. I don't look forward to that wait.

Dave Curtis' October 4 date is consistent with the October 3 date shown by the European retailers cited above, so that's where we stand. Not too bad, in the scheme of things, as it's less than three months away. The date is also consistent with Brian being back in the U.S. the last week in September... and presumably able to participate in release festivities and promotion.
It's unfortunate if the September 30th Grammy cutoff is just barely missed, but I suppose that such considerations aren't terribly important to the powers that be.
Anyway, I'm glad to hear that things seem to be moving along. It's interesting that so much work is still being done on the art/packaging/photos. One might have thought that most of the artwork would have been finished months ago, but apparently that's not the case.

OK, anybody ready for some actual NEWS? This is not a joke...
Last week I emailed Dave Curtis, the guy who runs
www.directcurrentmusic.com
-- the website that first listed the July 12th release, and then changed it to August 9th. I got a response tonight, with a new release date and some (slight) information about the different configurations. Here it is, in full:
Quote
Hi Sean --
Here's the latest, fresh from the Capitol/EMI release schedule:
OLD DATE NEW DATE
08/23/11 10/04/11 BEACH BOYS, THE SMILE SESSIONS, THE (2 CD)
08/23/11 10/04/11 BEACH BOYS, THE SMILE SESSIONS, THE (BOX SET)
08/23/11 10/04/11 BEACH BOYS, THE SMILE SESSIONS, THE (VINYL)
Thanks for the note -- and reminding me that the old date was, well, old.
Dave
Hey, it's SOMETHING .....
Yeah... it's the fourth different quasi-official date in four months.
7/12... 8/9... 8/23... 10/4...

The difference between that and the Grammy cut-off is just a week, which can easily be absorbed over the course of three months. Late September is still my bet, as it has been since February. I'd be very surprised if a Grammy nomination wasn't always part of the gameplan.

Is there anything known about the number of copies of the box that will form the limited edition? I mean: s'pose there will be 1750 copies available?

So that leaves 793 for all the rest of the world, then. I predict it will be collectible from day 1 on.

Yeah but if they release a stop-gap-bunt-instead-of-a-grandslam product with a few Smile songs on it in the meantrime, then decide afterwards to release the Smile Sessions minus those few songs that appeared on the interim material, then I'd say there would be a limited run of 9002.

Hey Manning -
I used the number of SSnet members as a guiding line, and went from there on. AGD, however, used not 2458, but 2580. Geddit?

All I'm thinking is that Al must have literally confirmed it, then walked out of the Capitol boardroom and told that interviewer it's happening. It was barely off the starting block in March, wasn't it?

Your "if" referred to the October 3rd date, implying that the "known" date was the US date -- which you put at one week before the speculated European date -- thereby confirming September 27th! So there!

That was my reading of it to … ah, where would we be without ambiguity.
And now David wades in with a solid fact. But what about the UK/European date David? I'm still hanging out for Sept 26!
