The triumph of The Hickey Script !

Just got some info that Dom has been dropped from any further activity to do with the Smile release. Can anyone corroborate this? Is the essay still in the set?

If he's just been dropped, the essay will be in the booklet unless they hold back the release and reprint them all. Unlikely in the extreme.

I'm not surprised. Dom did much, so much to keep the SMiLE flame alive, and also kindled it in so many new listeners (myself included, and I thank him for that, without ever having known the guy)... but from reading his latter-day work, I got a strong feeling that he didn't like some of the creative choices on BWPS, and that can't have endeared him to the BW camp. The new record, of course, is even *further* away from how he 'saw' SMiLE back in the day. I can imagine him being snippy about it, like he was in his 2004 book.

But then, Brian and the Boys *were* and *are* the artists... and Dom was just a guy who wrote about the art. As are we all. My feeling is that it's well not to develop too much of a feeling of entitlement about this stuff, and not starting to get confused that you ARE the artist when you're not... because when the artist does something you don't agree with, especially with THAT material that you've got to know so well, friction often develops and people can fall out with each other, frequently without very much in the way of justification. I've had that feeling from Dom's recent writing on the topic. And from what I'm hearing about it, his essay on the box is flat descriptive over much of its length, rather than firebrand evangelistic throughout, as it was back in the days of LLVS. A man whose ardour has cooled, methinks, and moved on to other enthusiasms, other great music from that period. There's certainly enough of it to move on *to*... and also, SMiLE isn't the mystery it was, whereas there's plenty of other great music from the time that remains obscure. I always felt, possibly unfairly (like I say, never met the guy...), that much of Dom's enthusiasm was because people had utterly forgotten this music back in the 80s, and he got a kick out of listening to, being unofficial keeper of, and evangelist for, this unknown, *forgotten* music. And telling people that yeah, he dug The Beach Boys. But, you know, not the Beach Boys *they* knew, the Boys of 'Getcha Back' and 'Rock and Roll Music', or even 'Kokomo' and 'Wipe Out' later. No, he was into the FORGOTTEN Beach Boys. A magical kingdom of music to which only he and a select few had the key.

And now that *everyone* can get into that world and listen to that music, he'd rather stick something different on his Stack-O-Matic...

Meh, I probably don't know what I'm talking about. That's just how I sees it. Don't wanna malign the guy - I prolly wouldn't be here posting this now if it weren't for him. Cheers Dom...

Well..........his job is done anyway, right? The project has been completed, right? What else would they need him for if his essay is done and will be included in the box's accompanying book?  I could understand it if he were to be let go mid-stream, prior to going to the printing press for the book, but the book (I assume) has already been printed and bound by now with one week to go, correct? What else would they need Dom for now? His work is done here. He can still do interviews if he's asked, too, I guess.

I, I love the colorful clothes she wears, and she's already working on my brain. I only looked in her eyes, but I picked up something I just can't explain. I, I bet I know what she’s like, and I can feel how right she’d be for me. It’s weird how she comes in so strong, and I wonder what she’s picking up from me. I hope it’s good, good, good, good vibrations, yeah!!

Methinks Dom still needs to make reparations for some of the arrogance and rudeness he foisted on goodhearted fans in those latters days of LLVS and the Pet Sounds list. A sincere "I'm sorry" costs no dollars, and goes for miles and miles in repairing good will.

Yeah, yeah, I hear a little ghost over my shoulder, whispering "Be careful what you say!" I think I am being.

But I stand by my opinion of how Dom came off. And my intuitions points towards him having po'd some significant players for this latest (alleged) action to have happened.

My kangaroo has broken down so I will have to ride my wallaby to the store to pick up my SMiLE box set. Hugh Jackman and Rusty Crowe usually can give me lift but they are very busy.

Yeah. Fosters was replaced by Victoria Bitter ages ago and that was the top-seller until Carlton Draught came along as an 'up-market' beer and that is now the top-selling beer.

Wow...this is the first time I heard of Dom allegedly getting the boot, as it were...yeah, I've rolled my eyes over the "facts" he presented in his Fishwrap article and his 2004/2005 Smile book (and I got a headache from so much eye-rolling when reading that book that I eventually liberated it from my library), but one thing I do have to admit is he's always been really nice to me (online, that is; never met him in person) and even sent me a tape of some really cool surf music he compiled...

So, is there any chance of orders going out early?  This is the first time I've dealt with Amazon, so I'm not sure how their shipments generally work.  Do shipments ever go out and arrive before the release date?  I can wait until Nov. 1, but I certainly wouldn't complain if the box arrived earlier!

And now for some news on the other favorite subject of Andrew's: German football (soccer).

It looks like Arnd Zeigler, host of my favorite football show on official German TV, broadcast from his home, is anticipating the upcoming release of TSS too. Smiley

Note the item on the shelf saying "The Beach Boys" in SMiLE font. Anybody here who knows what that might be?

And what's more, yesterday our home team won over the league's current leader who didn't concede a goal in the last 8 matches. I was jogging about one km from the stadium, but despite listening to "Help Me, Rhonda" at full volume with in-ear-plugs I could hear the crowd yell at Hannover's first goal. Cheesy
