Alright, hmm, let me pick a topic out of the hat,

worst smile song. What's your pick. go.

For me either Vegetables or Barnyard!! I like both songs but out of all the tracks I think these two are the least strongest.

We're agreed on vegetables then! It's worth remembering Barnyard was originally intended as a fade to H&V rather than a song in its own right. It may have subsequently been incorporated into the track Great Shape, or Old Master Painter - we just don't know - but always just a small part of a larger song. Personally it's one of my favourite snippets from Smile and I pray that some vocals have been unearthed for it.

Hey, Andreas, nice to see you're still around. That collection of CDs you sent me a decade ago is still one of the top three gifts I ever received in my life. How are you doing?
Hi Micha, how are you doing?

And that collection was only official releases, right!

I am doing fine, saving money for the big release, wishing there would be a LP-less version of the 4 CD box set. And wondering if Brian will ever have another concert in Germany.

Is this real or am I dreaming? No offense chris, but, to me, this might be the most ridiculous turn this thread has taken thus far.

What I tried to say was, that in this topic the negativity has been building up slowly but steadily, with a few sudden outbursts of personal replies and attacks in between. And looking back on it, I personally think I should have made a clear statement on the behaviour of some of the posters here much. But I didn't, and I regret that. I'm not saying I'm doing a perfect job here... just doing my best, and I make mistakes like everyone else does.

Topics like these make moderating necessary, but not easy. And we moderators aren't the same either, we have different points of few on moderating as well. And we never make the right choice, as - like TheRealBeachBoy already mentioned - we either judge too harsh (by banning) or too tolerant. Hence my reply earlier today in which I asked to please change the tone of everyone's replies, because from now on - to me - we've had enough of the negative and sometimes hostile posts.

So all present here please try to behave now (and I don't say that in a patronising way). I'm not threatening with bans here. I'm just making an appeal to everyone to do the most sensible thing, which is to "treat the others here, like you want to be treated".

Mods are human and humans tend to vary a lot (example: I'd sleep with Karen Allen, but not Katy Perry: personal taste... actually, just taste now I think on it), but to have a unified modding hymn-book that all sang from would be a start. Likewise, posters vary - 'cause they're human too (or at least, humanoid) - but to say generally be patient, count to ten or ignore isn't going to work (hence my request for the ignore button, which I now realise might have been so far in the past as to be pointless) as, frankly, some folk just like to lob the textual hand grenades, plus not everyone here has the patience of Job or the ability (or even desire) to turn the other cheek. I know I'm not a candidate for the Diplomatic Corps., but even so to see someone relentless propagating their oft-discredited views (did Phil ever actually read, or comprehend, what c-man was saying over the weekend ?) irks not just me, as the responses have proven. No problem with people's opinions, as long as they either have merit or are at least interesting. Phil's Eeyore impersonations fulfill neither stipulation (oh, btw, if you're wondering exactly why he's so all-fired against Smile being released, here's why - http://bigozine2.com/roio/?p=702 - note the dates and the thanks and before he gets incensed about it, he posted that url himself back in the spring, then later deleted it, as others will confirm). Point being - yes, there is one - this may not be a classroom, but we sure need rules and boundaries, and they need to be enforced on everyone or we might get another EgoBoard scenario, and that would be tragic. People here don't like me (including a mod) - that's not news. Some folk here seem to like me, but the majority don't care that much one way or the other, and the same is true for most posters here: inertia rules, sh*t blows over. But, it will recur, so - rules, boundaries and measures to be taken if these are exceeded should be established. Three strikes and out, unless you're being a complete arse.

One final thing to remember - Big Brother is watching us, and while they find a lot of what goes on here hilarious (fact: they do  Smiley), some of it can, inadvertently, touch a nerve (again, fact) and potentially hinder not only current proceedings but also future prospects. Consider: would you be inclined to give a class of hooligans with attitude an end-of-term treat ? Me neither. Sometimes, stuff said on fan MBs is noted and acted on, for better or worse, so, be careful what you wish for. But always remember - everything posted here is read by interested parties. Daily.

Picking out a few points (I generally agree here)

- but to say generally be patient, count to ten or ignore isn't going to work …

… but this is where it has to start. With yourself.
Now if that doesn’t work (and keep asking for a bit of patience doesn’t help either), then step 2 is the rules.

Point being - yes, there is one - this may not be a classroom, but we sure need rules and boundaries, and they need to be enforced …

Which makes me wonder...  we HAVE rules!
But:
1.   Do we even know we have them?
2.   If yes, do we know where to find them?
3.   If yes, do they cover it all?

I’m afraid that most of us don’t even get passed (1).

(and in case you wonder, the rules can be found here: http://smileysmile.net/board/index.php/topic,122.0.html

As for (3): I’m going to check if the rules can be updated.

Can we retitle this thread 'endless disharmony' or something, and start a new thread where we talk smile. A few of us are trying to get this back on topic, but any smile talk is continually buried under a persistent wash of tedium. I don't think I can face another page where, if we're not arguing, we're endlessly retreading and analysing previous arguments.

Fishmonk's question of weakest smile songs seemed a good and on topic diversion. Mine's vegetables. Anybody else?

Wind Chimes for me - I prefer the chord structure on SMiley, and the spooky vibe. Not to say the SMiLE version lacks charm in a baroque pop way, and it has BW's funkiest basslines he ever commited to tape, but there's something missing.

Then again, the Smile version is one of my favourite things to play on piano, so we're not talking huge levels of hate here.....

Vega-tables is one of my favorites; AlternateBrianWilson's version is killer. And that coda harmony still blows me away Every time I hear it.

My least favorite track would have to be 'Child Is Father To The Man' - once I hear a cleaned up version I may change my mind - but it sounds so muddy to my ears, and that chorus is so repetitious IMO.

I used to hate Wind Chimes with a passion (the super loud coda irritated the heck outa me) then I started playing it more and more and I soon found myself loving that coda. Love the Smiley version too.

OK, here's the rules: comments are purely my own.

Thanks for visiting the Smiley Smile message board. Here are a few guidelines to help everything run smoothly:

- Cool.

1) Joe, smile-holland, Jason, and  Billy C moderate the board.  They share that responsibility across the entire board.  In the few and rare times a member crosses the line, they will be able to remove or edit posts, and ban members if necessary.  Any complaints about a member or a post should be directed to them.  If after contacting them you are not satisfied, you then should contact me.  They, however, should always be your first line of contact concerning this board, and you will find I intend to support them in their roles.

- speaking personally, I was told a while back by one of those named above that they ignored my complaints. Makes you think, what's the point in you being a mod, then ? Say what you like about the Bloo and its mechanics, someone steps out of line, they're history. And who moderates the moderators ?

2) Treat others as you want to be treated. Think about what you are saying before you post a message. Lift each other up, don't tear each other down. Harassment of members is not tolerated. Please behave and not be an embarrassment to the good name of Brian Wilson and the Beach Boys.  But as he which hath called you is holy, so be ye holy in all manner of conversation; because it is written, Be ye holy; for I am holy.  1Peter 1:15-16

- ignoring the final sentence, which is a hangover from when Chuckie was actually in any way interested in Smiley Smile (and to me, objectionable - I don't like being preached at on a BB forum: I want that, there's a church around the corner, full of nice people who I don't see often enough), that's a fine sentiment and should be adhered to at all times. But of course, it isn't, especially the harrassment bit. We need to cultivate our garden.

3) Talking about bootlegs is fine. Posting messages asking for bootlegs or offering bootlegs is not fine. That's what private messages and emails are for. The same of course aplies to official recordings.

- common sense.

4) Yes, most of what would commonly be considered foul language is edited.  Currently, that means it's translated to Portuguese, though the method of filtering may change without notice.   If this bothers you, keep in mind rule #1.

- this is fine, except when one of the mods decides to unilaterally flip the filter to affect non-swear words... and let's be honest, we're all adults here - sometimes, only a good old-fashioned "F*** !" will do.  Grin

5) If you feel the need to discuss a PM you received with a third party, then don't expect your PMs to be very private, either. If you don't want someone sending you a PM, or someone doing anything in particular, tell them. Don't wait for or expect someone to speak up for you. If the party in question doesn't listen, go to a moderator about it.   Private messages will not be read by a moderator unless warranted by the behavior of a board member.  Anyone who becomes a cause for concern due to rude or abusive behavior may have their accounts temporarily frozen and their private and public messages examined to see what final actions should be taken.  Said action may be anything from a warning to a temporary or permanent ban.  The moderators will discuss and announce the action that is taken.  Any unwanted or improper private messages should be immediately reported to one of the moderators.

- again, fine. The P stands for "private": some folk don't seem to realise that, now or back in the day. Mind, given past events, this whole paragraph verges on the ironic.

6) Flirtatious and suggestive discussions are usually misunderstood and thus not welcome here...

- damn... and I was getting the hots for Flash Harry. It's the shades... Undecided

7) Please, no pictures in signatures.

- again, sensible

So, basically, to my mind, no sane person could argue with any of this, but edicts numbers 1 & 5 need addressing and implementing here, and #2 needs rewriting to remove the bible-punching and to include boring the nuts off every other poster by repeated posting of a view that is known to irritate the other posters. The rules need to be even handed, which by and large they are, and applied evenhandedly & consistently.

I may, or may not, be posting more on this topic.

Child is one of my favourites. I hear what you're saying about the repetitive chorus, but it doesn't bother me and more than made up for by the verse - the chords of which are just breathtaking. Everything about Smile that I find bewitching and mysterious is contained in those verse chords. I can't wait to hear a cleaned up version of this (which, as I understand it, is feasible).

As for Vegetables I wonder if they will reconstruct it as per the BWPS version, and is the accapella outro a smiley recording, i.e. might be dubious to include on the box?

Nope. Without the slap she's nothing special and, as you're pointed out, she's been infected by Russell Brand. And she'd probably insist on bloody well 'singing'.

Mind, she probably doesn't fancy me either.

Wind Chimes? Child? I think those two represent the groovy and spooky Smile vibe the most. The funky bassline part at the end of early Wind Chimes is probably my favourite part of the whole album.

The songs I like a little less than the others are probably: Vega-tables, Do You Like Worms and With Me Tonight/You're Welcome (if they're supposed to be on Smile).

OK, here's the rules: comments are purely my own.

So, roughly speaking - apart from a few edits - it's not the content of the current rules itself, but:

- it's nice to have rules, but as long as we don't even know they exist or where to look for them...
- it's the way these are rules are monitored (especially 1) and 5)  )

Looks like we all have some homework to do then...

And it should be mentioned that moderating decisions are often made together (or at least are not made by one person alone). This means that sometimes it can take a bit longer before action is taken.

I think Fire's a lot better than Friday Night for example. Once you hear the pumpin' bass (it's a bit hidden), it's suddenly a really groovy song. Not that chaotic.

Yeah, "I Wanna Be Around / Friday Night" is SMiLE at its dullest. They are an acceptable plug-in to emphasize the album's playful dynamic shifts, but I wish more time was spent developing "I'm In Great Shape" into a more complete song on its own.
