Why wasn't the awesome striped down version of california girls put on "Party!" instead of the awful medley?

No idea why California Girls wasn't included, and why I Get Around/Little Deuce Coupe is called a medley is beyond me - it's not a medley!

If we are missing the vocal masters for Cabin Essence (lead and TDM), how were Linnet and Boyd able to single track the vocal and amplify TDM on TSS?
Think about that for a little while and the answer will come.

I'm sure Mr. Doe will pardon me if I spill the beans...
The lead vocal was artificially double-tracked on the 20/20 version with each stereo channel receiving the single vocal track slightly altered to fill out the stereo field. Since the vocals are the only thing in stereo on that version (the backing track is in mono), Mr. Linett and Mr. Boyd simply removed one of the channels for the TSS mix. The result is a mono mix with a single track lead vocal.
As to the "Truck Driving Man" vocal: I think the track is simply EQ'd to bring out this section more (or the vocal was more prominent in one of the stereo channels so that one was used - not sure). I am definitely of the opinion that the tag is newly-remixed (as opposed to simply being the left or right channel of the 20/20 mix) since Mike's vocal is considerably louder in the mix. My understanding is the chorus vocals and the tag vocals were all recorded in '66 and exist on multi-tracks so this was possible.

Thanks for the clarification and sorry, I was letting the Smiley do the talking for me - I should have included some
behind the "fold down" comment to represent my befuddlement - ie, "I'm really struggling, you said it's not a remix, is it a fold down???"
I've gone back to the archives, and "tried" to deconstruct the original question (
If we are missing the vocal masters for Cabin Essence (lead and TDM), how were Linnet and Boyd able to single track the vocal and amplify TDM on TSS?
) and your follow-up -
Remember when the Mojo 45 was out and everyone was swearing black's white that it was a remix ? Wasn't then, isn't now, never will be
A possible theory posted is we're hearing a 1966 Brian mix of the music, with 1 channel of the '69 (vox) stuff pasted in, and jiggery-poke'ryed as per modern audio tech - but that doesn't doesn't deviate from Mr M's post. Occam, where are you?
Anyway, I've got nothin' (suprise); perhaps Mr Manning's incumbent turntable will answer all - hopefully it comes with sonar, x-ray and esp cartridges.
My personal gain out of this exercise is noticing (via repeat headphone listening) the first 10 seconds of Cabin Essence
seems
to have similar "tape spilled on the floor" artifacts as per Good Vibes.

Ok, take 2 at pinning this one down.
If we are missing the vocal masters for Cabin Essence (lead and TDM), how were Linnet and Boyd able to single track the vocal and amplify TDM on TSS?
If the multi's are missing (assumption), L&B only had the 1968 stereo master to use which the remastered (hard pan theory). There was no remixing. EQ'in' and removal of ADT artifacts add clarity to exsiting and 68 vox.
As AGD pointed, the good stuff is discussed in the Mojo 45 thread; (
http://smileysmile.net/board/index.php/topic,10483.0.html
). These theories were not confirmed within that thread, but I have no doubt they were confirmed on somewhere on site (I'm still looking).
Key quotes are below, but check out the whole thread - it's funny what happens when some dude left pans his mate's hi-fi. I've chosen quotes that stayed on topic (all from AGD, strangely), as the thread also dealt with Wonderful and Mojo delivery logistics;
OK, the Mojo 45 - "Cabin Essence" is as per 20/20 but in mono (mix ? fold-down ? no idea)... and "Wonderful" is as per the 1993 box.
Except.
The first set of bvs have an extra layer, the 'yodelling' bvs, at 0.53. otherwise, as per.
So I was 97% right
- June 12, 2011, 10:25:33 AM
Well... good question: given that aside for that maybe five seconds of additional bvs and "CE" being mono (which is something only the likes of us would even notice), they're versions readily available since 1993, I'd doubt it's a Mojo exclusive. But, to be honest, I have no idea
- June 13, 2011, 12:29:03 AM
a pukka mono mix, or even a stereo fold-down, would have a doubled Carl lead, which the 45 doesn't. Not saying the 45 is one channel of the stereo version, just that if you hard pan left, you get something very similar. Try it
- June 13, 2011, 02:35:43 AM
Well, it's obviously not a fold-down... and I have my doubts it's a new mix, 'cause if it was, I'm they'd have come up with a mono doubled lead. I'm standing by what I theorised (until proven wrong) - it's a re-EQ'd left pan of the stereo master. If only because nothing else fits
- June 13, 2011, 06:30:47 AM
I hear better quality mastering, I certainly hear (or deduce) new edits, I'm pretty sure I hear a hard pan to one channel of the stereo version in there somewhere: what I'm not hearing is any new mixing, just some re-EQing. I await knowing exactly what is going on in there

Probably not… it's purely for listening pleasure and my untrained ears probably wouldn't be able to tell a mix-downed EQ'ed hard-panned left solarisation of a folded stereo ADT from a mono cappucino. But I like a good latté from time to time.

Just how involved was Brian with the making of Smiley Smile? I have trouble accepting the fact that it is a "band" production... it seems like Brian's work through and through.
And yes, I am aware that he produced Good Vibrations (which is hardly a Smiley Smile track anyway).
