I broke down and listened to Look just our of curiosity. I don't really think the new vocals work, but that's just my opinion

Heroes and Villains ending right before the cantina section and going into Look is an unintentionally great transition.

Look with the child vocals is going to take some getting used to. Those are pitch-shifted, right?

I forget - is there a stereo, non-vocals version of "Look" elsewhere on the box? Hope so = \

It'd probably be at the end of the session track?

Carl singing "canvas the town and brush the backdrop" is cool. almost certainly wouldn't've been on '67 Smile, but it sounds really cool, so I'm okay with it.

Of course it's an opinion. I have a feeling "really bad" means "not like the JMZ mix" in your case. I'm not thrilled with them but they're not bad, just there.

The quality of these samples is terrible. There's a weird (intentional?) stereo distortion on all of them. Definitely not the best way to present the new release. If I didn't know better I would think it sounds as bad as the bootlegs.

True of many things here, really. A fair amoint of things here were recorded after 67. So hay.

If anyone's interested, the tracks drag into iTunes as so:

Remember to right click and 'View image'

They also sound better when not on the internet - no distortion

I know it was recorded in like '71 or whatever, but what I mean is that even if Smile had been completed in '67, Surf's Up almost certainly wouldn't have Brian singing the whole lead except for "canvas the town and brush the backdrop", it would likely either be a Brian lead the whole way through or a Carl one. that's why I'm saying.

Cabinessence didn't have a lead vocal recorded 'til 20/20, but that doesn't mean if it had been released in '67 it would have been without a lead.

Couldn't agree more. No-one should be judging the quality of the box on these low res examples. The real deal will, I'm sure sound quite different again.

The real album sounds much better. That's one thing everyone should be prepared for, much better sound quality. Regardless of how people feel about sequencing, various fly-ins, etc., I hope we will all agree on how awesome it sounds.

They are 128 kbps mp3s, but don't even sound that good. I checked them in Audition and there is definitely stereo distortion. Convert to mono and they sound much better.

If anyone wants the mp3s, PM me.

Probably the same way you'd do it on a PC. Smiley

The first trick is to actually be able to download the samples. I used a Firefox add-on called DownloadHelper. Install that, and when whatever you want to download plays, pull down the "Tools" menu, and near the bottom should be an option called "Download Helper," which branches off into a few more options...choose "Download."

Then drag and drop the files into iTunes.

Oh no, Why add Carl's vocals in there, doesn't work

 Undecided

Same here this is disappointing news to say the least.  Never was a fan of the 71' version of this song as I've always considered Brian's 66' demo rendition to be one of his finer vocals (was surprised to read recently that he himself is not a fan).  I understand if it was a question of getting the mix to sound right but it is what it is.

I'm not going to comment on any lag or syncopation until I hear it for myself.  Needless to say if there are issues like this I doubt I'll be the first on here to start throwing things around the barnyard.

I'm inclined to agree with pixel twin, that the perceived lag is deliberate to create syncopation. Surf's Up sounds great to my ears anyway. Can't wait to hear the tag to that one.

I'm surprised how quickly I've got used to the Barnyard fly ins too, and the Look ones also. Maybe I'm just easy to please but I'm excited for this disc 1 Smile. I think you have to take it for what it is. It was inevitable that they pad out all the vocal-less songs a bit more, and after all, if you don't like it, I'm sure some pro tools wizz will knock up a more purist fan mix soon enough.

Without the "bygone, bygone" part included I think it would have been jarring, but it sounds perfectly natural here. I really enjoy it.
