The only parts of the "Smile Sessions" box that I've heard so far are the intentionally leaked "Good Vibrations" & "Heroes & Villains"(I'm not a member of any social networking sites, so I haven't heard "Vegetables"). Anyhow, as we all know there will be some ProTools trickery in the "Disc One" re-creation of the "Smile" album.

I have no doubt that flying in the vocals from the "Surf's Up" piano/vocals demo onto the "Surf's Up Part One" backing track will work fine. It worked fine when "Purple Chick" did it, and Mark Linett has the added advantage of not having to filter out the piano from the piano/vocals demo, since Mark Linett had access to the multitrack of the piano/vocals demo.

As for flying in vocals from primitively recorded piano/vocal performances recorded by an interviewer/D.J. (on a portable tape recorder) onto the backing tracks of "Barnyard" & "I'm in Great Shape".....I'm more skeptical.

But the one area where I'm unquestionably opposed, is flying in any "Smiley Smile" vocals, or taking the first 45 seconds of "Heroes & Villains" from the "Smiley Smile" version. Since the re-creation of the "Smile" album will be presented in mono sound, there was no reason why the first 45 seconds of "Heroes & Villains" couldn't use the vocals from the "Smile" single version. I'm sure that Mark Linett & Brian Wilson would say that the whole reason why Brian,in 1967, re-recorded(at the home studio) the vocals for the first 45 seconds of the song, was because of sound quality reasons(The "Smile" single version shows the original recording of that section to be somewhat distorted, with harsh E.Q.). But having said all that, the original vocals were more energetic. The re-recorded vocals have better sound, but the overall feel is smoother, mellower, different. The whole vibe of any of the "Smiley Smile" vocals is sparser, quieter, with a different "feel" than authentic "Smile" vocals.

Idk, I Feel like they're a bit slow at parts, like they tried to make Brian's vocals fit JUST like Carl's, maybe it's just from being used to the old one...

I can't get over how beautiful "Surf's Up" sounds, that's only the song I sampled on that page.

I know what you mean, it seems to start a tad late (at least later than I'm used to hearing it in a lot of the mixes I've heard). Weird.

I thought it sounded intentionally more syncopated. I definitely liked it.

LOL! I did the same exact thing.  LOL

The two seconds I did hear sounded pretty decent.

Barnyard sounds great for flown in vocals, this box is going to be amazing.

And production aside, I’d so much rather hear a 14 year old David Marks shred some guitar on Chug-a-lug than hear a 51 year old Mike Love sing about bangin some chick in a swimming pool.-rab2591

Oof, I'm convinced by this version of Surf's Up Sad.

As mentioned, the timings seem slightly off, but what really stood out was the weird reverb on the vocals. It might be my speakers, but something doesn't sit right in the mix. Also, Carl singing the first 'canvas the town' is a bit jarring. Again, I want to give it the benefit of the doubt, so it could just be because it's what I'm used to, but the Anne Wallace mix sounds better to my ears.

EDIT: Ah, the reverb's just on 'domino', right? Not so bad then.

I broke down and listened to Look just our of curiosity. I don't really think the new vocals work, but that's just my opinion

Oof, I'm not at all convinced by this version of Surf's Up Sad.

As mentioned, the timings seem slightly off, but what really stood out was the weird reverb on the vocals. It might be my speakers, but something doesn't sit right in the mix. Also, why have Carl sing the first 'canvas the town'?

Probably because it's a different melody. To have that line sung in two different melodies is the right choice imo.

Certainly a valid point, but it just sounds a bit odd to my ears, having a very different-sounding vocal just for those few words.

Am I really the only one who used Carl's "canvass the town" vocal on the first part and as a harmony the 2n time along with the harmonies from the 71 version? I'm further convinced ideas were stolen from mine when they raided YouTube for fan mixes >: (

Anyway, Carl sounded great there on my mix, can't see why it wouldn't sound even better here. Having Brian in the first part sounds weird used twice as a lead like that. Can't listen right now, but yeah.

Thing is, who's to say that Brian WOULDN'T have had Carl sing the "Canvass the town..." part?

After all:
- "I Know There's An Answer" -- Mike sings only the first line of each verse.
- Mike sings only "And sonny, down snuff, I'm all right by the heroes and" in H&V
- Brian only sings the opening couple of lines of "California" along with a few random "On my way-ay"s (on the single version)

Having a sudden single- our double-line vocal in a song would be nothing new.
