I really hate to say it, but I think a few people are letting their excitement get the best of them. I think the big surprise will be the 1967 version of Surf's Up. Maybe one or two other songs. The way I see it, we'll be lucky if three tracks are totally 100% new. Remember, adamghost said a few months back that we'd probably be getting a few goodies, but a lot of stuff we've already heard. Albeit, in sound quality miles above any bootleg ever released.
Surf's Up 1967 is huge.

I don't think we should we get our hopes up too much for this - it's hearsay so far as there's been nothing official, just a remembered description and an AGD endorsement that it was time it was released.

It's legit, and this from sources better than I.

If it were down to me, I'd release it at 11/11/11, 11.11am local time.  Grin
That would be one epic Armistice Day. A saying along the lines of the famous statement of "eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month" should be made for the real day when the box comes out.

You should see what happens in Germany on 11/11 at 11:11 am every year....or maybe you shouldn't.....

Being in the right cities, it would forever change the image you have of Germans... it is the official start of the Karneval season.

And to complete a perfect weekend - Manchester United 8 (EIGHT), Arsenal 2.   Thud

No football in this thread please. Roll Eyes Especially as Hannover dropped from 2 to 4 in the Bundesliga.  Grin

Being a vinyl militant (that's for you, Jeff) I will listen to the LPs first. And I shall buy new boxes to celebrate it all.

I'd have preferred if they had put the sessions in a strict chronological order as opposed to order by songs. But of course I can put them in chronological order myself and burn CDs like that, which I will undoubtedly waste my time with - provided the box isn't sold out before I get it.

I would not do that. In Holland, Germany, and other countries, that is the total apex of the start of the Carnival season. People play heavy-duty jokes on each other then, if you know what I mean and I think you do.

AGD, if you're there, or someone else in the know -

what about the limitedness of the set? Any info? Frankly, I would find it quite awful if a couple of thousands would get lucky (the most well-heeled at that, I think, who already ordered every configuration), and many, many other people would be left behind.

Nothing on Amazon suggests that it's a limited edition, however with the price increases since last week you would think it was a limited edition box set.

Was originally announced as a limited edition box - now you know as much as I do.  The way it flew off the (virtual) shelves over the weekend I'm guessing it might be an edition of something like 50,000... but a guess is all it is.

Certainly not 2,580, which jest was taken entirely seriously by one poor soul.

Oh, like: you open the box carefully and full of expectation, and then a tiny cannon in it spouts your room full with confetti, or shaving foam. And you're supposed to laugh and have a beer on it all.

BTW: I just worked my way through the last 60+ pages and did not know about the actual release and track list until about two hours ago. I don't think I will be able to eat tonight. But hey: that's the first couple of Euros for you-know-what.

That's an impressive difference compared to the $110 a few of us managed to snatch the boxset for. On the first day, for $170, you could have the boxset, the 2-CD set, and TWO 2-LP sets!  Shocked

What happens on 11/11 ?  Andrew's post just reminded me of the "eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month" statement I have heard in a bunch of WW1 movies and documentaries.

To sum it up, they blew it, they blew it consistently, they continue to blow it, it is tragic and this pathological problem caused The Beach Boys' greatest music to be so underrated by the general public.

Isn't it a little weird that when you type in SMiLE sessions on Amazon, it's on the second page?

Come on Amazon, move it up to the first!

Thanks to Fishmonk for doing all that research to try and match up what's on the box etc and what we might already have.

I would only offer a word of caution - whilst we have the session dates and title, we won't know if we have the stuff until we hear it - I don't believe UM etc are complete - there is plenty of stuff I don't believe we have heard and I hop most of it will turn up on the box.

I am sure Mark and Alan know exactly what is available on bootleg and will hopefully try and avoid duplication unless absolutely necessary

Capitol forgot to inform us about an important feature of the new Smile sets:

John Stamos has provided additional vocals to complete a number of songs, in some places he overdubbed himself even. And: numerous tracks have been speeded up and been adorned with that nice modern 'dance' rhythm. To get totally, like, in sync with the vibe of todays kids, man. It's the BPMs that count in these days. Close harmony is on the way out anyway.

Excellent.

..all of the discussion about acetates raises the question in my mind concerning whether or not the legendary Durrie Parks acetates were found and used in this great project--

Secondly, if there is or will be a chronicle available of what the source(s) for each track on the Box is.  That would be fascinating.
