Two...Jasper's came from an acetate.
The big picture now becomes even bigger:
A lot of folks have said they wanted a "clean" version of Barnyard after being stuck with a noisy and washy acetate version for years. Same thing with the Our Prayer session, and other odds and ends.
Child is from acetate, Teeter-Totter is from acetate...those are the two.
Pick out the tracks like Barnyard on that tracklist which we've only known as noisy acetates, and I'm even more excited to hear clean versions of some amazing songs which have been buried under layers of noise for years. They must have come from the tape sources for this box set. Yeah, man!
It keeps getting better.
The Dennis song is an acetate too I think, but I'm not sure that can be counted as a SMiLE recording.
Where did you hear that was an acetate? There was a song labeled "I Don't Know" from the 70's that was sourced from an acetate but that is not the same recording from the Smile era which is going on the set.
Somebody on here posted it, 15-20 pages back. Apperently somebody donated the acetate, which happens to be the only existing copy of the song.

I thought that was Jasper Daily's "Teeter Totter Love" which was a one-of-a-kind acetate, I could be wrong though.

I may have been mistaken. Go back to page 194. Slim Shady makes a comment about "I Don't Know". PhilDempsey then makes a comment to Slim, but I'm not sure exactly what he meant by it. Just go back and it'll probably make more sense than I am right now.

Disc: 5
1. Good Vibrations: Gold Star 2/18/66 (The Pet Sounds Session)
Shouldn't this be 2/17? We have this I think on PSS and on UM 15
2. Good Vibrations: Gold Star 4/9/66
This session is on UM 15 as well
. Good Vibrations: Western 5/4/66 (First Chorus)
4. Good Vibrations: Western 5/4/66 (Second Chorus & Fade)
On UM 15
5. Good Vibrations: Sunset Sound 5/24/66 (Part 1)
6. Good Vibrations: Sunset Sound 5/24/66 (Parts 2 & 3)
7. Good Vibrations: Sunset Sound 5/24/66 (Part 4)
"part 2" and "part 3" are on UM 15. I wonder if Part 1 and 4 are new?
8. Good Vibrations: Western 5/27/66 (Part C)
9. Good Vibrations: Western 5/27/66 (Chorus)
10. Good Vibrations: Western 5/27/66 (Fade Sequence)
On UM 15
11. Good Vibrations (Inspiration): Western 6/2/66 (Part 1)
12. Good Vibrations (Inspiration): Western 6/2/66 (Part 3)
13. Good Vibrations (Inspiration): Western 6/2/66 (Part 4)
We don't have these I think. There is one rehearsal section from 6/2 on UM 15 but nothing else.
14. Good Vibrations: Western 6/16/66 (Part 1)
15. Good Vibrations: Western 6/16/66 (Part 2 & verse)
16. Good Vibrations: Western 6/16/66 (Part 2 continued)
These are on UM 15 I think.
17. Good Vibrations: Western 6/18/66 (Part 1)
18. Good Vibrations: Western 6/18/66 (Part 2)
On UM 15
19. Good Vibrations (Persuasion): Western 9/1/66
20. Good Vibrations: Western 9/1/66 (new bridge)
We have a bunch of stuff from 9/1/66 on UM 15
21. Good Vibrations: Session Masters
22. Good Vibrations single version stereo track
23. Good Good Good Vibrations (first version with overdubs) 3/66
24. Good Vibrations: Alternate Edit 8/24/66
I don't know about these. Is track 23 the one on the Smiley twofer? Is the "stereo track" the same one from PSS? Is it a complete stereo track or is it just the backing track? Not sure what Session Masters or Alternate Edit are.
I think 22 would be the stereo backing track as featured on the GV box set. 23 is obviously the version that is on the Smiley Smile two-fer (Tony Asher lyrics) and the overdubs probably are the slight alterations Brian made to the lyrics. I think he dropped in the word "Good" over the word "right" in "I can feel how right she'd be for me" and I believe "She's Already Workin' On My Brain" was overdubbed as well if I'm remembering correctly.

30. Heroes And Villains: Organ Waltz / Intro [Heroes And Villains Session: 3/1/67]
Didn't we go over this already?
I think the track some of us think that might be will turn out to be the track it is. Van Dyke playing organ.

This thing is more than I bargained for.
I just wonder if Brian has heard most (if not all) of this stuff. If he has, I wonder if there's anything he's surprised at hearing and if there's something he hasn't heard since he recorded it.
Where do you think I can find the "Three score and five I'm very much alive" lyrics in Heroes & Villains? Heroes & Villains Part 2 maybe?
The Cantina section. Brian or Mike or both lead versions included in this set?
And a whole disc devoted to Good Vibrations! Outrageous. Can't wait to hear something that hasn't been booted before. Kinda unlikely, huh? How about the vocal sessions. Yeah, right!

30. Heroes And Villains: Organ Waltz / Intro [Heroes And Villains Session: 3/1/67]
Didn't we go over this already?
I think the track some of us think that might be will turn out to be the track it is. Van Dyke playing organ.
Definitely. Though it doesn't sound like a pump organ to me at all. It has a chord organ type of sound but bigger. And it seems to be generating a lot of noise, but not of the kind pumping the foot pedals. Definitely Van Dyke playing though. What's interesting is that in what i've heard of this, it's a very, very brief snippet. He plays a few bars, stops, tries again and messes up, and that's it. Either something more substantial from this session that hasn't ben heard before is what track 30 is, or they really are including EVERYTHING. As someone many pages back said "warts and all." Which the curious completist in me is thrilled about. I never thought an official Smile release would be so exhaustive. But hooray.

Where can I hear this, it's not on Heroes and Villains Sessions or Heroes and Vibrations. Also, as I said before the date doesn't make sense, the session is from March 1967, after Van Dyke left. Gimmie a little more info on this please.

When did VDP leave again? The thing is, the piece that guitarfool and i are referring to is undoubtedly on organ and it's in 3/4, hence: ORGAN WALTZ.

I really hate to say it, but I think a few people are letting their excitement get the best of them. I think the big surprise will be the 1967 version of Surf's Up. Maybe one or two other songs. The way I see it, we'll be lucky if three tracks are totally 100% new. Remember, adamghost said a few months back that we'd probably be getting a few goodies, but a lot of stuff we've already heard. Albeit, in sound quality miles above any bootleg ever released.
This. I think there are a few surprises to be had. Going through the tracklist it seems most of the stuff isn't new. I think the stuff on the two version set will be some of the more major stuff. Surf's Up 1967 is huge. I am also leaning towards thinking that a two part version of Heroes was actually discovered and recreated from multitracks. Brian was in the habit of labeling each section a different part, verse was Part 1, chorus was part 2, etc. I think that's pretty standard. But saying that I don't think the part 1, part 2 45 version is supposed to be a complete song. There may be a possibility that Alan and Mark created it themselves, but I don't think that's their mo on this boxset.
All the rest of the stuff on the boxset seems to be an attempt to provide basically ever conceivable part that was recorded, so everyone can make their own ultra deluxe fanmix.
Which is (at least IMO) enough reason to let the excitement get the best of us. Most of us knew going into this that we were going to have most of this material already. That is why I posted today that for the first time I'm starting to feel a little envious of the SMiLE novice who is going to get washed over with this stuff all at once. Maybe he/she will dig it or maybe they won't but the first time I ever listened to this music certainly changed my understanding and appreciation of music at large and well it's probably the closest I'll ever come to knowing how my parents felt opening a new Beatles or Beach Boys record in the sixties and placing it on the turntable for it's inaugural spin.
That being said 11/1/11 is still going to be a kick in the head though. This set is a SMiLEologist's dream. For the first time we are going to have the luxury of having five discs of nearly every relevant piece of SMiLE music in stellar SQ. For the ambitious fan there is endless possibilities that this set provides in terms of creating new fan mixes or compilations flying stuff in from bootlegs or other source, combining this with that or whatnot. For the less ambitious fan, they now will have five discs of the best of the best of the SMiLE sessions which will no doubt provide a much more pleasant listening experience than any SMiLE bootleg out there.
The unheard stuff is just going to be the laughing gravy on top of everything. As I mentioned months earlier this music/project unfinished as it is deserved to be heard as a cohesive whole presented in the best sound quality available. For years songs like "Cabinessence", "Heroes and Villains", "Surf's Up" and the rest have been spread across many different Beach Boys releases while others have been relegated to two-fers and bootlegs. Now for the first time all of these wonderful songs are going to be presented in their proper context historically speaking on one album available to the consumer to purchase. I hate to wax poetic but the fact that after all these years "SMiLE" is going to be found in cd racks sitting along "Pet Sounds" and the rest where it should have been all along is something in enough of itself to get excited about.

Consider the possibility Van Dyke could have still been playing random sessions and contributing in the studio after he left his original role as a primary writer/collaborator.

You might be right. I am confused though as to the date. What you're saying does seem to make sense, the organ part is followed by the intro but something doesn't add up. The session is from March 1st, I have always been under the impression that Van left in December. AGD's site says that March 1st was a Western session, and another site on the net says that there were 9 musicians present, yet the evening session seems to include vocal work. Something just doesn't add up.

If you'd rather consider another possibility besides Van Dyke working as a musician, look at the dates of some of the photos showing Brian and Van Dyke working on Smile in the studio (usually Western in the more familiar photos). 1967.

This might be going a little off topic, but what is "spooky instrumental"? Is it that weird keyboard/guitar Spanish sounding thing?

Bicycle Rider, the long instrumental one on the H&V Sections.

I was thinking about creating a new topic, but I might as well post it here. The mods can move it if it belongs somewhere else. I was wondering, how many "link tracks" did Darian make to piece together songs on BWPS? The intro to I'm In Great Shape is an obvious one. What about the "woooooowooowoooowwooooooooooooooooo" bit? I'm confused about that one, because I've heard it a SMiLE fan mix. Is it "vintage SMiLE"? The bit I'm talking about is right before you hear "You're under arrest!" on the BWPS disc.
