I was thinking about creating a new topic, but I might as well post it here. The mods can move it if it belongs somewhere else. I was wondering, how many "link tracks" did Darian make to piece together songs on BWPS? The intro to I'm In Great Shape is an obvious one. What about the "woooooowooowoooowwooooooooooooooooo" bit? I'm confused about that one, because I've heard it a SMiLE fan mix. Is it "vintage SMiLE"? The bit I'm talking about is right before you hear "You're under arrest!" on the BWPS disc.
That's vintage Heroes and Villains. Going from memory, it's on the first disc of the 3 cd SOT set and the Odeon cd.

Can I call a time out to put this on the table?
Assuming...just assuming...that the organ piece played by Van Dyke Parks is the "organ intro" dated 3/1/67 on the tracklisting, I also see something not quite adding up as it should. Yet.
Immediately after that organ part on the tape, someone is heard playing those chromatic piano runs that are called "H&V Intro" on the 1993 box set and which was grafted onto the beginning of Mrs. O'Leary's Cow when BWPS was released...similar to what a few boots had done previously.
Then, the chromatic piano runs are heard with Van Dyke's organ idea placed neatly on top. It fits, and that weird "beeping" run of organ notes that leads into the crashing sounds of "Fire" on BWPS and the boots seems to be a remnant of this very idea.
Was 3/1/67 - the session dated on the tracklist - a re-record of these previous ideas on the "Intro" theme? Because the ironic thing about this is how much music related to the H&V Intro was recorded and which seems to appear on the same reel of tape from Jan. 3, 1967, or as it would appear numerically: 1/3/67
So is this 3/1/67 track really a "new" track? If so I'd gladly and hopefully stand corrected.
Or is the date 3/1/67 a typo perhaps made decades ago when a date of 1/3/67, a simple reversal of the month and day, would make more logical sense based on what else was recorded 1/3/67, again according to that tracklist.
I defer to those with AFM contracts, tape boxes, and other hard evidence as always - I'm just wondering about the coincidence of 3/1 versus 1/3 and it's bugged me for a long time.

Are you the thread cop or a new admin, Jay? As you can see, I came in very late to the conversation since the track listing of the box set was announced by Amazon. I'm sure by tomorrow someone will answer my question(s). Or not. My "condescending tone" was actually a little jibe, or poke if you will, to get a little attention to my questions. No more or no less than that, Jay. Is that OK, or........did I neglect to meet your expectations? Sorry if I didn't.
P.S. By the way, there's no argument or any disagreement with anyone so why do I need to take anything to PM?

30. Heroes And Villains: Organ Waltz / Intro [Heroes And Villains Session: 3/1/67]
Didn't we go over this already?
I think the track some of us think that might be will turn out to be the track it is. Van Dyke playing organ.
Where can I hear this, it's not on Heroes and Villains Sessions or Heroes and Vibrations. Also, as I said before the date doesn't make sense, the session is from March 1967, after Van Dyke left. Gimmie a little more info on this please.
Consider the possibility Van Dyke could have still been playing random sessions and contributing in the studio after he left his original role as a primary writer/collaborator.
I'm sure the sessionography in the box will answer such questions: c-man's a great researcher.

This might be going a little off topic, but what is "spooky instrumental"? Is it that weird keyboard/guitar Spanish sounding thing?
Again - the "Spanish guitar instrumental;/Doves of Peace/Indian Wisdom" is a

outtake. Established a few years ago. Source: tape box, where it's listed as "New Song" (see note on 10452).

9. Heroes And Villains: Mission Pak [Heroes And Villains Session: 1/3/67]
It does tie in to other Smile themes considering the Mission Pak sales pitch involved 'sending California to the rest of the country'. Or it could tie in that Mission Pak did most of their business at Christmas, with people sending Mission Pak gift boxes of fresh fruit as Christmas gifts. Or maybe the clue is in finding a Mission Pak jingle of some kind, or tying that into the Christmas season somehow.
Probably the most intriguing song title on that list so far...

Hm, the song seems to be from the same Heroes session as the one on "Heroes and Villains Sessions Volume 2" Though all the tracks there seem to be accounted for.

Probably missed someone saying just this, but as the 1/3/67 session is at Columbia, the odds on the tracks being predominantly vocal are pretty good. Mission bells is a good notion, but how about chanted prayers, psalms, stuff like that. Just a thought.

Just seeing stuff from this period always makes me so happy, what a cool time. You can just imagine Brian driving around in his Rolls Royce. Revolver had just come out, The Byrds were at Columbia recording Younger than Yesterday. Love was recording Da Capo somewhere, maybe at Sunset Sounds? The number one hit records included Sunshine Superman, 96 Tears, and I'm a Believer.

I agree - seeing "Columbia" points toward vocals most times.
Growing up on the East Coast I can't vouch for this but I get the impression the "Mission Pak" advertising jingle was ubiquitous in and around Los Angeles, and people listening to the radio or watching TV got bombarded with this ad from just before Thanksgiving to Christmas. Going by the January 3 date, the jingle and name was fresh in the minds of Brian, Van Dyke, etc.
Color me intrigued. And the awesome part is that it won't be long 'til we know for sure what all of that was about. Hopefully...

Getting expensive though I assume it will come down from that. It will be interesting to see what the price ends up being after other sites start listing it for preorder. Does this thing even have a suggested retail price yet?

The photo posted on Amazon - are those the pizza boxes mocked up to look like Smile tapes, from that infamous RoachClips pic?
Well, they've got black printing on yellow box tape... and that's the only similarity. Those are genuine

Any other sale sites people can cite? I missed the 1st 2 price points and am getting concerned as the preorder damage mounts. They know they have a hot item on their hands, perhaps it won't go down again and we'll be scrambling.

I have to admit I'd buy the box if it were $470 even If it meant scrimping and saving for a couple of months. It's just a once In a lifetime must have box set.
Having said that I was more than happy(and lucky) to score it for the $110

This is all so exciting!
A couple of tracks i'm thinking about:
4.
Heroes And Villains: Barnyard (Master Take) [Heroes And Villains Session: 10/20/66]
I've thought for some time that the "Barnyard" lyrics were for the track that closes the "Cantina" version of H&V and NOT the track thats re-recorded on BWPS which features animal sounds. I'm looking forward to finding out!
9.
Heroes And Villains: Mission Pak [Heroes And Villains Session: 1/3/67]
Could this be the vocal track we now know as "Soul Made Beautiful"?
On the Heroes And Villains Sessions Parts 1 & 2 CD, when they are rehearsing this, at about the 4:00 mark, Brian says (I think) "Come on you guys, pull through! Happy Happy Happy
Mission Pak
singing sound!
It's late, and my mind is racing....I LOVE SMILE! (and all you guys too!)

I really hate to say it, but I think a few people are letting their excitement get the best of them. I think the big surprise will be the 1967 version of Surf's Up. Maybe one or two other songs. The way I see it, we'll be lucky if three tracks are totally 100% new. Remember, adamghost said a few months back that we'd probably be getting a few goodies, but a lot of stuff we've already heard. Albeit, in sound quality miles above any bootleg ever released.
Surf's Up 1967 is huge.
I don't think we should we get our hopes up too much for this - it's hearsay so far as there's been nothing official, just a remembered description and an AGD endorsement that it was time it was released.
