Does anyone think Wonderful lead vocals will be flown into the Rock With Me Henry backing track and replace the very rough scratch vocal attempt? I need some water, man.

I don't think the acetate version is on any of the additional discs, I think it's the version on disc 1. I think that for disc 1 they basically did what they had to do to m ake the most complete versions of songs. Like for disc 3 I don't think any of the versions of cabinessence there include vocals, only the version on disc 1 does, taken from 20/20.

"Look how many pages this thread is now!"
In all seriousness, though, now that we have this information I'm hyped again. Now if we can get a collection like this for some 70s outtakes (74 California Feelin' PLEASE)I might die happy.

They mastered a version of "Child" from an acetate
Thank you, thank you, thank you, Peter, for passing along this tidbit.
What am I saying... tidbit? BLOCKBUSTER news.
This just keeps getting better and better. Man, oh man, oh man.
Forgive my ignorance but what does it mean that a version of Child was mastered from an acetate? I mean, i know what it means, but what exactly does that imply? Original Brian mix? Missing vocals? Something else?
Could be anything - that's the exciting part! At the least I'd expect an original Brian mix, and given that the source is an actual acetate (rather than being a re-creation of a found acetate with existing multi-tracks), it would stand to reason that there's something new on there that doesn't exist on the multi-tracks anymore, i.e. vocals we haven't heard.
Damn it's gonna be a rough next couple months!

At minimum, it implies an original Brian mix (even if it was only a rough mix). Also, the fact they're mastering from an acetate mix implies that it contains something that's missing on the tapes. You don't master from an acetate if you've got the same thing on tape.

Disc: 5
1. Good Vibrations: Gold Star 2/18/66 (The Pet Sounds Session)
Shouldn't this be 2/17? We have this I think on PSS and on UM 15
2. Good Vibrations: Gold Star 4/9/66
This session is on UM 15 as well
. Good Vibrations: Western 5/4/66 (First Chorus)
4. Good Vibrations: Western 5/4/66 (Second Chorus & Fade)
On UM 15
5. Good Vibrations: Sunset Sound 5/24/66 (Part 1)
6. Good Vibrations: Sunset Sound 5/24/66 (Parts 2 & 3)
7. Good Vibrations: Sunset Sound 5/24/66 (Part 4)
"part 2" and "part 3" are on UM 15. I wonder if Part 1 and 4 are new?
8. Good Vibrations: Western 5/27/66 (Part C)
9. Good Vibrations: Western 5/27/66 (Chorus)
10. Good Vibrations: Western 5/27/66 (Fade Sequence)
On UM 15
11. Good Vibrations (Inspiration): Western 6/2/66 (Part 1)
12. Good Vibrations (Inspiration): Western 6/2/66 (Part 3)
13. Good Vibrations (Inspiration): Western 6/2/66 (Part 4)
We don't have these I think. There is one rehearsal section from 6/2 on UM 15 but nothing else.
14. Good Vibrations: Western 6/16/66 (Part 1)
15. Good Vibrations: Western 6/16/66 (Part 2 & verse)
16. Good Vibrations: Western 6/16/66 (Part 2 continued)
These are on UM 15 I think.
17. Good Vibrations: Western 6/18/66 (Part 1)
18. Good Vibrations: Western 6/18/66 (Part 2)
On UM 15
19. Good Vibrations (Persuasion): Western 9/1/66
20. Good Vibrations: Western 9/1/66 (new bridge)
We have a bunch of stuff from 9/1/66 on UM 15
21. Good Vibrations: Session Masters
22. Good Vibrations single version stereo track
23. Good Good Good Vibrations (first version with overdubs) 3/66
24. Good Vibrations: Alternate Edit 8/24/66
I don't know about these. Is track 23 the one on the Smiley twofer? Is the "stereo track" the same one from PSS? Is it a complete stereo track or is it just the backing track? Not sure what Session Masters or Alternate Edit are.

Man, come on, don't say that. I keep thinking about this. I'm on edge about it. That is why, even though i told myself i wouldn't hear any leaks, i have now changed my mind and i will, in case, you know, i perish before 11/1.
So....do we think that Brian kept the Wild Honey Surf's Up (wow, it's surreal to even write that) a secret from everyone? Any guesses if it's done live in one pass, or overdubbed (possibly doubled) vocals?
Also, i am thinking now that Child may very well have something previously unheard because as juggler said, if you have the tapes, there's no need to use an acetate. Acetate is a last resort unless it has something unique on it.

My dad and I used to get into really heated debates over Sgt. Pepper vs SMiLE. My dad said Pepper was better. But he only heard Smiley Smile, and he assumed that Smiley Smile was made from the best parts of SMiLE. Not matter how many times I tried to explain that Smiley Smile and SMiLE weren't the same thing, and that SMiLE puts Pepper to shame, he wouldn't budge. I wish he were still here to finally hear proof of what I'd been telling him all along.

OK, if no one else has done this - I know Fishmonk is taking the CD's one by one - here's what I think are the new, unbooted tracks/mixes on the box set:
Disc 1
Heroes and Villains - a new mono mix from acetate? Or Cantina (Pt1) and the new "master take" of Part Two?
Worms - with tape warble corrected
My Only Sunshine - from tape with Dennis's vocal? Hope Barnshine is included in the mix!
Wonderful - with backing vocals flown in - Mojo release
Cabinessence - mono mix with non ADT vocal - Mojo release
Surf's Up - new "Anne Wallace" mix with Brian's vocal flown in to part one
Vegetables - new mix/edit, hopefully with the "Fade to Vegetables"
Smile backing vocals
Surf's Up 1967
Disc 2
Barnyard (master take) - in stereo from tape presumably. It would be nice to get a stereo vocal version (backing vocals) as well, unless this is it.
Mission pak - what the? may be something we have but not under that name.
Part Two master take from 2/27/67 - is this really the fabled part 2 master, or a reconstruction based on acetate?
Disc 4
two Dada takes from 12/66
Cool Cool Water 6/7/67 - I don't believe this is water chant but an earlier attempt at the song
I Don't Know
Teeter totter love
Heroes early version outtakes - likely something new here but we'll have to hear it
Vinyl
stereo mix You're Welcome
stereo mix of Surf's Up - presumably the Brian vocal for Part 1 flown in version in stereo
stereo mix of Vegetables - the new mix from disc 1 in stereo
Misc
Child new mix from acetate - unclear if this is on disc 1 or one of the two versions on disc 3.
Am is missing anything? We're going to have to wait and listen to disc 5 to see if any of the GV sessions are new, but I'm sure there won't be much new since SOT had 3 discs of sessions and this is one disc.

I seem to recall reading that somewhere as well. I seriously think IIGS is the single greatest mystery of Smile. As we know it (and as it ended up appearing on BWPS), it's not even a song. Not even a verse. Just three lines. It seems less significant than He Gives Speeches. Yet it was singled out with its own title on the infamous handwritten list of songs. And we cant go by...
http://smileysmile.net/board/index.php/topic,10643.0.html
That said, I do agree that there must be SOME reason for it having been moved. The only other thing I can think of is to give it context from the period of origin. I said in the other post, Brian used
those
titles to refer to
those
songs, since whoever wrote the tracklisting on his behalf. And now (possibly) having us heard "IIGS" in that context on BWPS, maybe theire going back a little farther in reference to the section with those three lines and showing the fans another of the idea's Brian had planned for it. I don't know. I guess we'll see in November. But the reason "three lines" got a listed on the tracklist when other (cut) songs didn't has been there all along. It's been said since at least 1979 and been there for all to see since 2004.
Again, blame any confusion on the bootleggers.
Oh, and Yay Smile release!

There's just so much incredible info here. I was away on the beach (in Thailand) for a few days then came back to see this storm of posts. I'm really impressed and will get a couple of the box sets. But one thing that bothers me is the use of vinyl for some tracks, e.g. the stereo mix of You're Welcome. If I bought the box set will I have the right to get a digital download copy ? I haven't had a turntable in some 15 years at least.

My Only Sunshine - from tape with Dennis's vocal? Hope Barnshine is included in the mix!
I may be reading too much into what he said, but when Peter Reum posted about two tracks being sourced from acetate - Child and Teeter Totter - I got the impression those were the only two that had come from acetate sources.
From what I remember, the whole "Barnshine" deal was only found on an acetate...is this correct? If that is the case, ***from what we know now***, it would not be on the set unless they found a source tape, but that's not the impression I got reading between the lines.
I hope I'm wrong and I'd love to hear it on this box - it's not a big deal compared to some of the other tracks but it would be cool to hear in high quality. For all we know it could be on the tracklist already but we're not spotting it by the title.

I really hate to say it, but I think a few people are letting their excitement get the best of them. I think the big surprise will be the 1967 version of Surf's Up. Maybe one or two other songs. The way I see it, we'll be lucky if three tracks are totally 100% new. Remember, adamghost said a few months back that we'd probably be getting a few goodies, but a lot of stuff we've already heard. Albeit, in sound quality miles above any bootleg ever released.

The unique part only found on an acetate could be an authentic Brian Wilson mix, edit, and sequence from 66-67. And Brian often added little parts like guitar solos or various sonic icing on the cake during mixdown sessions, and even piecing together the source tapes working from a model wouldn't be the same as an authentic Brian edit/mixdown...only those who have heard it will know for sure until this sucker gets released.

I think the sound quality is indeed the big selling point, especially for things like the Our Prayer, Barnyard, Child, and Surf's Up sessions we've only had in fairly low quality since the 80's.
However as a real diehard Smile fan, I'd say no matter what the musical or artistic quality of the actual recordings may turn out to be, being able to purchase and own tracks like "Teeter Totter Love", and "I Don't Know" after trying to imagine in my head what they sounded like for several decades would be worth a good chunk of the price.
And the booklet...can't wait for the photos.

This. I think there are a few surprises to be had. Going through the tracklist it seems most of the stuff isn't new. I think the stuff on the two version set will be some of the more major stuff. Surf's Up 1967 is huge. I am also leaning towards thinking that a two part version of Heroes was actually discovered and recreated from multitracks. Brian was in the habit of labeling each section a different part, verse was Part 1, chorus was part 2, etc. I think that's pretty standard. But saying that I don't think the part 1, part 2 45 version is supposed to be a complete song. There may be a possibility that Alan and Mark created it themselves, but I don't think that's their mo on this boxset.
All the rest of the stuff on the boxset seems to be an attempt to provide basically ever conceivable part that was recorded, so everyone can make their own ultra deluxe fanmix.

I must admit I'm feeling a bit envious of the novice at this moment who is going to be picking up this set and 99% of it is going to be new to him/her. Imagine possibly only being familiar with SMiLE via the SS/WH two-fer and possibly the GV box set and then WHAM this shows up on your doorstep on 11/1. Treasures untold!
Well, even though I have the Purple Chick SMiLE and a handful of concerts as far as boots go, I would be considered a novice to any SMiLE sessions and almost all of the box will be brand new to me. So, I guess it's not a bad position to be in!
I am going to definitely wait and not pre-order my box. I usually find much better deals locally on things like these, and sometimes places like the aforementioned Best Buy do have those exclusive bonuses. What I would love to see is a bonus CD featuring any tracks not on the box that are on the 2CD set and/or the vinyl. Or possibly even bonus tracks not available on ANY release. That would piss off a lot of people!

Two...Jasper's came from an acetate.
The big picture now becomes even bigger:
A lot of folks have said they wanted a "clean" version of Barnyard after being stuck with a noisy and washy acetate version for years. Same thing with the Our Prayer session, and other odds and ends.
Child is from acetate, Teeter-Totter is from acetate...those are the two.
Pick out the tracks like Barnyard on that tracklist which we've only known as noisy acetates, and I'm even more excited to hear clean versions of some amazing songs which have been buried under layers of noise for years. They must have come from the tape sources for this box set. Yeah, man!
It keeps getting better.
The Dennis song is an acetate too I think, but I'm not sure that can be counted as a SMiLE recording.
Where did you hear that was an acetate? There was a song labeled "I Don't Know" from the 70's that was sourced from an acetate but that is not the same recording from the Smile era which is going on the set.

My main concern is that if disc 1 (in mono) is edited and tweaked versions of the songs then the only alternatives for getting the full historically accurate tracks are to swipe stereo session highlights and fold them down. If disc one is a newly constructed suite I hope the unedited stuffs can be had elsewhere on the box with ease.

I usually find much better deals locally on things like these, and sometimes places like the aforementioned Best Buy do have those exclusive bonuses.
So you'd be on board for a Best Buy-sponsored Smile bobblehead giveaway? It wouldn't have to be Vosse, we could also push for Van Dyke, David Anderle, Danny Hutton, etc.
