Is it known why Brian recorded this? Was it a conscious decision to re-record the song? Or was it just for the heck of it? At the very start it almost seems like he was just searching for a song to play, in other words a very impromptu choice/performance. Were there other takes of the song? Or were there other songs played at the same session?
It's not the first time Brian recorded himself demoing an older tune... check out BW's version of Al's Susie Cincinnati from the BBs time in Holland... *casts line*

Of course, I've loved Blondie's voice since I first heard it in 1969, so... 1969? Really? Before he was a Beach Boy? Carl produced The Flame before Blondie and Ricky joined the band, and when did The Flame's album come out, about 1970? Carl must've brought some demos or tracks to Brother Records beforehand to get them signed to the label. 1969 seems reasonable considering thsi timeline, no?

Here is the interview with McGuinn where those comments are taken from. http://www.ibiblio.org/jimmy/mcguinn/DeepQuestions.htmlTo be fair to McGuinn, he used that "unequally yoked" thing as a reason for quitting Hillman/Clark (or just Hillman by that point) in the late 70s. He goes on to say that even if all surviving members of the Byrds were Christians he still wouldn't do the reunion because he's happy where he is. he has said before he likes the folkie troubadour lifestyle, him and his wife in their touring van. It's good to see musicians who don't put money first if their heart isn't in it.

Just curious, trying to start an even-tempered debate... What is it that causes the Robo Al effect that i can hear? Ray said it's not Auto-tune, but that's just one brand of pitch correction software. Are you saying, Ray, that there is no pitch correction on the track, or that it's just not the Auto-tune brand? I can hear something "unnatural" on Al's voice. It's not on every syllable of every word, but there is some vocal effect going on in many places. Whether it's an intentional effect to get it sounding modern and shiny for teh internetz, or whether it's the production team not allowing a single (human) off-key note, IMO, i would prefer to hear Al's voice without this effect. I'm not against pitch correction itself, I actually like Cher's song and Kanye West, but i don't like it with the Beach Boys. Wow, my plea backfired, eh? Let's keep this friendly!

The intro and the chorus reminded me of LDB especially. The drum fills and guitar licks.

Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Carl Wilson biography due September 29th

Carl was so private that this is kind of a Catch-22 situation... if anyone close to Carl spoke to the biographer, they probably wouldn't have given much away. And if no one spoke to the biographer, what's he really gonna tell us that we can't find from using the search function on this board?
Does anyone really think this is going to be a great biography?
Having said that, i don't know much about Carl's life so it'd be interesting to find out even a little more.

Someone would need to filter out the aggressive and rude questions. I'd imagine the opportunity for some to heckle would be too great...
If it could be kept civil, i think Mike would be a great Q&A. He's certainly had an exciting life, and he probably remembers a lot of it.
I'd like someone to ask him what he thinks of the movie Norbit.

Now that's interesting. That's a GREAT catch, I definitely forgot about that single sleeve. I do hope that isn't the finished poster; for some reason I thought they might use Copper Black font. Unlikely to be Brian's handwriting, because why would the art department bother? And that artwork is HORRIBLE. It looks like someone wiping their arse.

The excellent Teresa Cowles on bass there.
I thought Carol Kaye was playing Carol Kaye in the movie? At least that's what she told me… In a bizarre twist, Carol Kaye is playing Teresa Cowles playing Carol Kaye in the movie. Carol also does her own stunts, and is Carol Kaye's body double in the Cool Cool Water scene. She also played James Jamerson in Standing in the Shadows of Motown.

I've always heard Brian singing that higher part from around 1:44 onwards ("Ooooh, ah ha"). Could be Carl, i guess, but sounds more like Brian to me. Though i have no evidence other than my own ears listening to this track.
Anyone have any proof either way?
