126  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / CATP WTF!? on: April 11, 2015, 03:03:37 PM
Was it just me, or did Joe Thomas say that the BW record that NPP most resembled was Carl and the Passions? Is Joe Thomas so completely out of touch with Brian's previous work that he actually thinks they are similar?

This quote was taken from the web
Quote
Thomas says the vibe of the new music is not along the lines of "TWGMTR", but more akin to a "Wild Honey and Carl and the Passions/So Tough" style.

Question: Is there a BW style that resembles NPP any less than Carl and the Passions (okay, apart from BB Love You)?

Lets come up with a list of similarities:
Brian
Al
Blondie
They both have at least 8 songs
CATP was packaged with Pet Sounds, which had Sloop John B, and the SJB reference in Sail Away

Our Special Love sounds like a Backstreet Boys song Sad

The Right Time is growing on me. It should have been the lead track from TWGMTR.
128  Non Smiley Smile Stuff / General Music Discussion / Re: Help! Can anyone identify these two tracks???? on: April 07, 2015, 08:04:59 AM
Eastern European? Country? Are you guys crazy?

It sounds like fairly generic modern American rock. A Smashing Pumpkins influence in the music, but the singer sounds like any kind of female rock singer from the 90s: Lisa Loeb/Alanis Morissette/Evanescence.

I'd guess a woman and three guys in the band, circa 2000. Possibly unsigned.

Is it known why Brian recorded this? Was it a conscious decision to re-record the song? Or was it just for the heck of it? At the very start it almost seems like he was just searching for a song to play, in other words a very impromptu choice/performance. Were there other takes of the song? Or were there other songs played at the same session?

It's not the first time Brian recorded himself demoing an older tune... check out BW's version of Al's Susie Cincinnati from the BBs time in Holland...

I'd like to hear Frank Ocean singing with Brian Wilson, but imo BW's right not to let him rap on a BW track. Regardless of merit, it would stick out like a sore thumb on the album.
131  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Blondie on Wild Honey on: March 23, 2015, 02:54:51 AM
Of course, I've loved Blondie's voice since I first heard it in 1969, so...

1969?  Really?  Before he was a Beach Boy?

Carl produced The Flame before Blondie and Ricky joined the band, and when did The Flame's album come out, about 1970? Carl must've brought some demos or tracks to Brother Records beforehand to get them signed to the label. 1969 seems reasonable considering thsi timeline, no?
132  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Blondie on Wild Honey on: March 21, 2015, 03:26:07 PM
This is amazing. I'm way more excited about and impressed by this performance than anything from the C50 Beach Boys reunion.

Blondie is a great addition to the band Smiley

nope. but look around for the PERRO sessions/outtakes.

Also, you might like parts of Paul Kantner/Jefferson Starship's 'Blows Against the Empire', made with much the same cast of characters.

Here is the interview with McGuinn where those comments are taken from.

http://www.ibiblio.org/jimmy/mcguinn/DeepQuestions.html

To be fair to McGuinn, he used that "unequally yoked" thing as a reason for quitting Hillman/Clark (or just Hillman by that point) in the late 70s. He goes on to say that even if all surviving members of the Byrds were Christians he still wouldn't do the reunion because he's happy where he is.

he has said before he likes the folkie troubadour lifestyle, him and his wife in their touring van.

It's good to see musicians who don't put money first if their heart isn't in it.
135  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Preview No Pier Pressure On Google Play! on: February 19, 2015, 01:56:34 AM
I won't listen to the samples so i can save the album for when it's released in full, but i wouldn't be unhappy if this were Imagination II.

I really like Imagination. It's probably my favourite BW solo album.
136  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: New Brian Wilson song just premiered on radio on: February 18, 2015, 03:55:57 AM
Just curious, trying to start an even-tempered debate... Smiley

What is it that causes the Robo Al effect that i can hear? Ray said it's not Auto-tune, but that's just one brand of pitch correction software. Are you saying, Ray, that there is no pitch correction on the track, or that it's just not the Auto-tune brand?

I can hear something "unnatural" on Al's voice. It's not on every syllable of every word, but there is some vocal effect going on in many places. Whether it's an intentional effect to get it sounding modern and shiny for teh internetz, or whether it's the production team not allowing a single (human) off-key note, IMO, i would prefer to hear Al's voice without this effect. I'm not against pitch correction itself, I actually like Cher's song and Kanye West, but i don't like it with the Beach Boys.

Wow, my plea backfired, eh? Smiley

Let's keep this friendly!
137  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: the 1972 pet sounds, can someone help me.. on: February 17, 2015, 07:14:09 AM
I've never seen that reissue before.

So, in 1972, the BBs issued:

Pet Sounds
CATP & Pet Sounds

but it wasn't possible to buy CATP on its own? And some people think the NPP deluxe edition is bad marketing Smiley

And i too tried singing Lay Down Burden over the track. The intro and the chorus reminded me of LDB especially. The drum fills and guitar licks.

Pleasant and catchy MOR. Like a cross between something from the Imagination album and TWGMTR. Brian sounds good in his places.

BUT Robo Al is in full effect. There are places where it doesn't even sound like Al, the processing is so heavy.

141  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Carl Wilson biography due September 29th on: February 09, 2015, 08:05:14 AM
Carl was so private that this is kind of a Catch-22 situation... if anyone close to Carl spoke to the biographer, they probably wouldn't have given much away. And if no one spoke to the biographer, what's he really gonna tell us that we can't find from using the search function on this board?

Does anyone really think this is going to be a great biography?

Having said that, i don't know much about Carl's life so it'd be interesting to find out even a little more.

TLI isn't a great song or production. Very thin sounding. I can see why no one bought it. Thankfully.
143  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Mike Love: Q&A request on: January 29, 2015, 02:03:00 AM
Someone would need to filter out the aggressive and rude questions. I'd imagine the opportunity for some to heckle would be too great...

If it could be kept civil, i think Mike would be a great Q&A. He's certainly had an exciting life, and he probably remembers a lot of it.

I'd like someone to ask him what he thinks of the movie Norbit.

Paul Simon - Graceland
Peter Gabriel - So
George Harrison - Cloud 9

This were huge albums in my house and car when i was a little boy.

On cassette, of course.
145  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Love and Mercy - News and Reviews on: January 08, 2015, 02:02:12 AM
To those that would know. Any chance that is Brian's hand writing?
Dunno about that, but I do know that it's from the Love and Mercy LP single http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Love_and_Mercy#mediaviewer/File:%22Love_and_Mercy%22_single_cover.jpg

Now that's interesting.  That's a GREAT catch, I definitely forgot about that single sleeve.

I do hope that isn't the finished poster; for some reason I thought they might use Copper Black font.

Unlikely to be Brian's handwriting, because why would the art department bother?

And that artwork is HORRIBLE. It looks like someone wiping their arse.

i recall drooling over some of PongHit's posts a little while back. I'm pretty sure he's heard some stuff that's not out there yet. Didn't he hear it from Alan Boyd?

I'd wager AGD has heard some really rare stuff too… care to expand?Smiley

Let's get this more on topic.... The BBC's coverage of Joe Cocker's death mentions that he had success with covers of a number of songs, including You Are So Beautiful, which specifically mentions Billy Preston AND Dennis Wilson as co-writers.

Does anyone know if the journalist, Ian Youngs, is a BB fan, because i guess he'd have to be with that kind of knowledge.

Is "Bone of Contention" the name of Brian's new album??

 Old Man

It's an outtake from Pleasure Island Smiley

The excellent Teresa Cowles on bass there.

I thought Carol Kaye was playing Carol Kaye in the movie? At least that's what she told me… Smiley

In a bizarre twist, Carol Kaye is playing Teresa Cowles playing Carol Kaye in the movie. Carol also does her own stunts, and is Carol Kaye's body double in the Cool Cool Water scene.

She also played James Jamerson in Standing in the Shadows of Motown.
