the part from the instagram preview sounds great, the part from the other preview sounds a little shouty but i'm sure in the whole it'll be good. I love how Brian is back to singing 'high' and doesn't really give a sh*t if it's perfect or not. I'm not familiar with Wanderlust so I can't compare it to the original...
Yeah, i like hearing Brian sound like Brian. If that's what he sounds like, then that's fine with me. I don't want an overly robotic Brian.

Can Anyone guess what the album cover will be like?
I get a very "surfs up"/blue album cover feel with the name, but the songs that look to be on the album seem very joyful.
A crappy/cheesy cover with a wooden pier and a yellow/orange sunset. Maybe a man/woman silhouette too. I'd expect something similar. Except for BW88 none of his solo records ever had good cover art. Even BWPS looked like they couldn't care less. um Lucky Old Sun had great cover art but yes Key of Disney was ca-ca. Lucky Old Sun had awful cover art, absolutely awful TLOS is nearly as bad as GIOMH. BW solo artwork has got to be some of the worst amateurish photoshop fodaing shite i have ever seen outside of rap/hip-hop album covers (which at least have humour value). p.s. BWPSmile and Gershwin aside, which were quite classy.

I really like Imagination. It was the first BBs release after i became a fan. I remember BBC Radio 2 previewing a different song each day for a week pre-release.
I like the nylon-string guitars and the production as a whole, but I'm not a fan of the soft pad sounding drums.
The Sgt Pepper-ish touches on the tag of Your Imagination are a real highlight. Lay Down Burden and Cry are beautiful. Sherry She Needs Me was handled gently. South American is an insanely catchy pop song.
Probably my favourite BW solo album, along with Gershwin.

I'd rather have the BBs sing the lyrics in a lower key, or slightly off key, rather than the robotic patchwork of autotune and Jeff that we ended up with.
I don't care if a word or a whole line is off, i don't care if the falsetto is shaky. These are 70 year old human beings, not Beyonce. i don't expect a flawless performance, i expect the Beach Boys to SING the majority of their own songs.
TWGMTR is hard to listen to. It's jarring.
That said, i do like Isn't It Time. A funky, percussive pop song.

I bought a vinyl POB in about 1997 from a second hand record shop for Ģ7. It had just come in. It looked (and still does) in amazing condition. I would have guessed it was new. I'm pretty sure it has the grey Caribou logo on the record.
Does anyone know if there were any reissues of POB?
I find it hard to believe (a) that i have an original POB and (b) that it would have been in such good condition.

I'd guess drugs had a lot to do with it. Maybe the post-Landy Brian wanted to stay clean (for a time anyway). And Carl and Dennis had their own substance issues, so maybe the more dynamic and lively Mike n Al faction swayed Brian. Money is never too far from decision making, so maybe also siding with Mike and Al represented the best prospect for bucks. The Mike-favoured retro 15BO made the top 10, whereas the Brian & Carl Love You album made no.56. Carl wasn't writing, Dennis was into his solo thing. And this was only 4 years after Endless Summer.

Anyone else find it strange that Paul Giamatti didn't attend the film festival? Or at least wasn't in any of the group pictures?
The original agreement was for a set number of appearances and interviews, and when things were starting to look good, those involved agreed to a set number of extra promotional appearances. Brian wanted to keep promoting the film after the agreed-upon end date but Paul Giamatti already had other commitments and had to bow out. Brian said it was like being fired from his life.

That being said, I think this film will do much in terms of elevating Brian Wilson's public profile and making people aware of his struggles and plights which can only be a good thing in my opinion for circumstances that extend far beyond Brian. As guitarfool mentioned, Brian Wilson is a survivor and his story should be shared with the general public.
The irony is that the "Brian as a survivor" narrative has been used to sell Brian's work probably starting with 1976 (Brian's Back), but even in the Landy era. I don't think i've read an article on Brian's solo work that hasn't made mention of the backstory, which let's face it, is gold for journalists

From what I've read, she's portrayed as the sole heroine who liberated Brian, and that's simply not the case. The lawsuit that lead directly to Landy's hold over Brian being broken was instigated May 7th 1991 by the family: Carl, Audree, Wendy & Carnie. As far as anyone's aware, Melinda didn't renew contact with Brian until summer 1993. Not denying she gave Brian somewhere where he could feel secure and productive, nor that she was instrumental in instigating the two major moments in his solo career... but the single person who freed Brian from Landy's malign influence, no. Maybe the reviewer has it wrong. We'll see. Have to say, from all the current reviews, the movie looks set to be way better than pretty much any of us here dared hope.
I'd be surprised if the movie wasn't a little loose with the more complicated truth over the conservatorship. Having Melinda act as the driving force streamlines the narrative, reduces the need for more involved secondary characters and increases the reputation of Melinda for the audience. I'm not saying Melinda had any influence in the script being written that way, it's just a standard Hollywood story of the saviour and redemption. But i'm still looking forward to it.

It was crispy, and like eating a cheetoh puff. I'm almost certain it was seaweed, as it was a bit sweet.
I buy sweet seaweed sheets from my chinese supermarket, but i've never seen the puffs before. If i see any, i'll let you know.

Does anybody have any idea exactly what it was that I was eating? It tasted a bit sweet, and I want to say it was made from seaweed (hence, 'Sea Taste') but i do not know for sure.
Was it jelly-like? If so, it might be agar, or mochi.

thanks, ian.
one thing i'm dead keen to know is (since i've only heard the session tapes) the answer to this embarrassingly obvious question: were these tunes ever released?
ps. 'the uncalled for three' is a sublime name. pps. mike love produced the session? am i high?
Never officially released. And have a read of Stephen W. Desper's great posts about the Manson sessions. The BBs would bring in bands for Desper to record a demo for Brother Records. And i imagine a similar thing happened here. So I'd guess Mike didn't sit behind the board, pushing the faders and ordering the boys to syncopate, rather that he'd arranged their studio time with SWD.

Just when you thought you'd heard pretty much everything... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NAGARvThO58Any background info on Daddy Dear would be much appreciated? Is this a widely known song (among hardcore fans) which I've somehow missed? It was a demo made around the time of the Holland album. It's pretty well-known, although it was hard to find for a while. There's a disagreement about who's actually singing/playing. Sounds like Brian to me, but other's (AGD included) say it's Al. There's a thread dedicated to the song around here somewhere. The background: Brian borrowed a tape recorder from someone while in Laren in 1972, and when it was given back, the owner found this at the end of the reel. So, the facts are... 1 - Brian borrowed it. 2 - there are two people on the tape 3 - the songs are "Daddy Dear" and "Susie Cincinnati". After that, it gets confusing. To my ears, no-one, but no-one says "gosh darned" that way except Alan (Brian, frankly, would swear)... I don't really see why Brian would play a song that's not his... Alan on the other hand surely would know such a song as "Daddy Dear"... Alan can sound a helluva lot like Brian. Well, he does swear. He says "sh*t" pretty clearly at 0:13. The way the person hits the notes in his falsetto at around 1:00, the person's lower range vocals, and the speaking voice all sound just like Brian to me, and I've never confused Brian and Al before when paying attention, for whatever that's worth. Also, he says "then it goes" multiple times throughout the tape, which you can also hear Brian saying on the "Fairytale" demo on Get the Boot. Someone, I think hypehat, mentioned to me that he thought it was two different people. So, when you listen to it with that perspective, I think it almost works. What if that second person/whistler is Alan? What if, after Brian finishes his song, Al sits down and records his own song? The "sorry" just before the break in the two recordings sounds like Al to me. I think it sounds like Brian doing both songs. It sounds like Brian is learning/rehearsing SC. Wasn't the original plan in Holland for the BBs to tour Europe to subsidise the expensive move? Would Brian not have been expected to tour? Would Brian have been expected to play piano/keyboard on tour? Wouldn't Brian then need to learn the more recent songs? Wouldn't Susie Cincinnati have been a fun rockier kind of song to play in concert? or maybe he's just playing it for fun.

I like Kanye, he's one of the few people making proper challenging pop music. I'm hoping it's going to be a guest spot like Gold Digger with Jamie Foxx, rather than a joint collaboration. Or maybe Paul's stuff on Michael Jackson's Thriller. A 21st Century The Girl Is Mine style ballad would be awesome. If BW fans are spitting out their breakfast over Frank Ocean, just be grateful it's not 'Ye Actually, Kanye's stuff esp on 808's & Heartbreak is an example of great use of the autotune effect.
