1  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / "Landlocked" LP wanted - help me complete my collection! on: January 18, 2020, 03:43:42 PM
So, for the past couple months, a local record shop has allowed me to scoop up all of those "collector's album" LP's, where fans had put out hard copies of the unreleased Beach Boys albums.  I now have most of them - both editions of "Smile," both editions of "Adult Child," both editions of "Califo(r)nia Feeling", "The New Album", "Merry Christmas", and the 'random unreleased tracks' comp "Carl And The Passions: Made In USA."

One problem.

No "Landlocked."

I actually asked the store today if they'd seen that come in, and they were fairly certain they had sold it (he asked "that had a tan cover, right?").  I took to eBay, where - for the first time I've seen - they DO have a "Landlocked".... in not great condition, and priced exponentially higher than it should be.  (The other albums in the series have cost me about 25 apiece.  This was well over 100.)

So, being a Beach Boys forum, I want to put feelers out - does ANYONE have a Brother Records "Landlocked" to spare?  Name a price.  If it's under 100 (including shipping), I'll buy it.
2  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: The potential success (or lack therof) of the aborted Lei'd in Hawaii album on: January 18, 2020, 03:31:31 PM
It was pretty common in the ‘60s. The Seeds “Raw and Alive” is a studio album with audience overdubs. The Beach Boys themselves had already done this with “Party” and a couple studio tracks on the ‘64 Concert album too.

EDIT - looks like c-man already mentioned this ha.

Want to hear a truly odd "live" Frankenstein?  The live version of "In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida."

There's a long church-like organ intro clearly tacked on (the audience chatter is looped fairly obviously), then much of the song seems to be legitimately live... complete with a drum solo obviously pasted in from another performance, because the atmosphere and sound quality totally change.  To top it all off, there's a noticeable jump in the song to wipe out the 'Egyptian'-styled section, I'm guessing to keep the song to the 19 minutes it already is.
3  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Feel Flows box set on: November 29, 2019, 10:07:21 AM
The recorded music industry obviously has gone through massive changes over the past 20 years.  The only real market left for physical releases is deluxe packages for super-fans/collectors.  Do places like Target and Barnes & Noble even sell CDs anymore?  I'm not even sure the last time I bought a CD... maybe 2012, 2013.  Vinyl has made a comeback, but it's a niche thing, also aimed at super-fans/collectors.  No one is going into to Target and buying Sgt Pepper on vinyl because they want to listen to the songs.  They've already heard the songs.  They already have the songs on the iphone.  The vinyl package is simply a vanity product-- a decoration to look cool in the owner's home.

Of course, I bought the Smile box in 2011.  How could I not?  It was the dream release of every hardcore BB/BW fan for decades. But I've never played any of the vinyl though it certainly does look cool.  I did read the book, cover to cover.  I ripped the CDs once to my iTunes and returned them to the box never to be taken out again.

I was just at a Barnes and Noble that sold CD's, in fact.  Target, on the other hand, has very few.

Other places like Best Buy carry vinyl exclusively.

It better be called "Remember The Zoo". XD
5  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Anyone have a 'Landlocked' LP to spare? on: November 17, 2019, 09:00:29 AM
And, also, if I may throw it in, I need the 'Making Waves' version of "Adult Child" as well!  (I have the Brother one, with the 'fireman hat' cover.)
6  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Anyone have a 'Landlocked' LP to spare? on: November 17, 2019, 08:59:09 AM
Hello!  I recently made a FANTASTIC record shop find - "The New Album," "Adult Child" and "Califonia Feeling [sic]" in one go.  That NEARLY completed my set, as I already had both Brother "SMILE"s and "Merry Christmas From The Califonia Legends."  One problem, though....

They didn't have "Landlocked."

Would anyone be willing to sell a Brother "Landlocked" LP for NOT a ridiculous price, so I may complete my set? Smiley  Please PM me!
7  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Does anyone have info about this Smile vinyl bootleg? on: October 27, 2017, 05:43:32 AM
Yep, nothing more than disc 1 of the far-more-attractive 2-LP "Capitol Records" boot.
8  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / "Add Some Music" blurb (and cover art!) inside Reprise LP! on: September 15, 2016, 08:52:26 PM
A while back, I bought a rather battered 2-LP set called "The Big Ball," which showcased various Reprise artists circa 1970 - the Beach Boys, Norman Greenbaum, Captain Beefheart, Fleetwood Mac, etcetera.

After months of letting it sit on my shelf, I took it out this evening, and spotted something in the liner notes....

Yep - at this point, their next album was still "Add Some Music," complete with artwork recycled almost entirely for "Sunflower"!  The next column (not shown in this photo) touts the LP as due for release April 1970.

Oh no, I have the MP3's already. Smiley

I just thought I missed out on FLAC links in the YouTube descriptions!
10  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Scott G - fantasy albums? on: August 29, 2016, 08:54:13 AM
Hoping to reach Scott G; I've tried via PM here, with no luck! :-(

Scott - could you give me the FLAC links (privately if need be) for a number of your 'fantasy albums' NOT included on your blog?  I couldn't get them all before the YouTube stuff went down.  Thanks!

* The Fading Rock Group Revival
* Wild Honey (Brother 9003)
* Dumb Angel (1966 Smile)
* Smile 1972
* Sun Flower (First Draft)
* Add Some Music (Second Draft)
* Caribou
* Song Of The Whale

Thanks so much in advance!!!
11  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: 1983 SMiLE bootleg. Anywhere online to hear it?? on: August 21, 2016, 08:27:23 PM
It's quite awful, to be honest.

At least on my copy, the volume fluctuates from WAY too loud to almost inaudible; one song (labeled "Holidays") is a phony, a Miles Davis track intentionally miscredited as a Beach Boys outtake; "Smiley Smile" songs are used in place of "Smile" versions not circulating yet; and again, at least on mine, "Surf's Up" is distorted to the point of being painfully unlistenable.

I understand the historical value it had, but it's EASILY the *worst* Smile bootleg in existence.
12  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / 'Pet Sounds' - the original track list reconstructed on: August 09, 2016, 05:12:35 PM
I haven't done a WHOLE lot of "alternate universe" Beach Boys projects.... but after reading about the originally submitted 'Pet Sounds' track list here, I thought I'd have a shot at putting it together.  Enjoy!! Smiley

14  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / 'Wild Honey' version of "Surf's Up"? on: August 06, 2016, 04:35:05 PM
The last couple days, I've found something (posted twice, by different people) on YouTube that I never heard before.... it appears to be a solo piano performance of "Surf's Up" from the Wild Honey sessions.

I've NEVER heard of this before, though that sort of 'saloon' piano sound definitely points to the Wild Honey era.  Anyone know more information about this?
15  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Best Beach Boys / BW inspired song?? on: February 12, 2016, 03:50:54 PM
"Black Sheep" and "At My Most Beautiful".
16  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: GIOMH-Promotional Copy? on: March 26, 2015, 07:15:32 PM
There are some other valuable promos as well.  Like, the Dixie Chicks' "Fly" (which actually has a song where the final version had a blank track in the middle of the disc - long story) and ICP's "The Amazing Jeckel Brothers" (which has an extra song).

No others I know of.

Wow... I just found this section (I missed the chat), doesn't look like he answered a whole lot.  Especially the SMiLE questions...  Huh

19  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: 1991 Smile 2-LP - I WANT IT. on: November 20, 2014, 11:49:39 AM
None of you people would pay a grand for an album, why should I?

None of you.
20  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: 1991 Smile 2-LP - I WANT IT. on: November 20, 2014, 09:31:50 AM
I don't have a lot of money, and still live at home with my family because I can't afford an apartment.

I am not blowing $1,000 on an album that people have paid FAR, FAR less for.  And that's the last I'm arguing with you.  If you want $1,000 for your copy, whatever, good for you.  But I'm sure someone else will be a little more reasonable and less insulting.
21  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: 1991 Smile 2-LP - I WANT IT. on: November 20, 2014, 08:21:54 AM
....Plus the fact, when's the last time you've seen a bootleg sell for $1,000?

The highest I've ever seen was Vigotone "Smile" for $150-200.  (And I paid a fraction of that.)
22  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: 1991 Smile 2-LP - I WANT IT. on: November 20, 2014, 07:29:01 AM
That's crap.

I know someone who just bought it for $20, and the one I found for auction sold for $15.
23  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: 3 possible releases in the wake of Endless Summer on: November 20, 2014, 07:28:31 AM
You would've waited in line for "Battle Hymn"?

That's sad. :-P
24  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / 1991 Smile 2-LP - I WANT IT. on: November 20, 2014, 05:45:45 AM
This thread might get me banned forever (or at the very least deleted).... I DON'T CARE!

Because the fact is, the only vinyl representation of "Smile" I need is the obscure 1991 2-LP set, and can't find a copy of this *ANYWHERE*.  I'm willing to drop upwards of $100 for it, easy.  No questions asked.

If *anyone* here has a copy they're willing to spare, then for the love of my sanity, MESSAGE ME.

Thank you.  Smiley

Yeah.... when the idea of him getting married was first mentioned in the media a few months back, I sadly knew EXACTLY who it would be.

I seem to remember finding this girl's blog once, and it's all the disturbing stuff you'd expect - "Charlie told me to shave my head and I said yes!  I love you, Charlie!!"
