Wow - some of Domenic's choices are AWFUL.

The 'tape explosion' crashing right into "Do You Like Worms" doesn't work *at all*.  I have a feeling I'll just say 'screw it' and splice on the ending from the Smile Sessions version....
127  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Domenic Priore's \ on: October 03, 2014, 10:28:13 PM
......The ones on Side 4 have no segues.

*slaps forehead*

Well, "Wind Chimes" is a giant snag.....

The only version with all the sections seems to be on "The Smile Sessions" - which has part of 'whispering winds' layered over the intro.  I can't get rid of it.  Figures that this song would be *very* unrepresented on the other discs; I was hoping to find a HQ version of the take used on the GV box, but no dice.
129  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Domenic Priore's "SMiLE"? on: October 02, 2014, 07:01:41 PM
I'm curious..... has anyone ever reconstructed the track list for "Smile" in the Domenic Priore book?  It sounds like it would work quite well (and fit the length of a 1967 LP).  As follows:

SIDE ONE
01) Heroes and Villains - The 'Cantina' version, apparently ending after the 'tape explosion'.  I gotta admit, this seems like the shortest, most awkward configuration of the song ever; it has no resolution!
02) Do You Dig Worms?
03) The Old Master Painter / You Are My Sunshine - With the sliding strings bumping right into....
04) Wonderful
05) Child Is Father To The Man
06) Our Prayer
07) Cabinessence

SIDE TWO
01) Good Vibrations
02) Vega-Tables
03) Wind Chimes
04) Mrs. O'Leary's Cow
05) Cool, Cool Water - He seems to be describing the 'Sunflower' version... not sure why one would include that instead of "I Love To Say Da-Da".
06) Surf's Up

Is it that "Heroes and Villains Long Mix" on YouTube?  (Though I don't think that hits 18 minutes.)

Man, THAT one defines 'random'.... I'm sorry, but it literally is just all over the place.  Using TWO takes of the "Fire" intro is kind of overkill, too.
131  Smiley Smile Stuff / Smile Sessions Box Set (2011) / Re: TSS - All things Look on: September 23, 2014, 10:49:44 AM
I dunno..... the slowed down "Chi-chi-child"s sound very silly to me.
132  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: 17-minute \ on: September 23, 2014, 07:37:27 AM
Well, it does seem that "Worms" was meant to be part of Brian's wacky imagined H&V suite at one point.... and it does work great as a lead in to the Bicycle Rider interlude.

I honestly never found why the sandbox piano was so "crazy" anyway.... when he explained the motive behind it, I liked the idea.

Mono, except the "I'm In Great Shape" demo seems a *teeny bit* pushed to one side.  Not sure why.

Yes, but was your 18:30 version structured?  Or was it just a bundle of every recorded piece?
137  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: 17-minute \ on: September 22, 2014, 11:26:50 AM
I'll probably post it somewhere and link it....
138  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / 17-minute "Heroes and Villains" coming.... on: September 22, 2014, 07:20:34 AM
Yes, that's right!  You heard right!  Seventeen whole minutes of "Heroes and Villains"!

Several years ago, using the structure of the ten-minute 'Heroes and Villains Suite' (from the Odeon Smile) as a base, I began seeing how I could expand that into something even bigger by incorporating songs and sections thought to be slated for inclusion in H&V at some point.  I think my final version at the time was something around twelve minutes.  Well, that's not good enough!

I've been hard at work on crafting "Heroes and Villains" into a side-long suite, currently sitting at a length of 17:05.  Move over, "In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida". :-P

The structure is now something like this...

* Heroes and Villains Part 1 (including Fire intro)
* Do You Like Worms
* Bicycle Rider Theme / Bridge To Indians
* Gee / Heroes and Villains Part 2
* I'm In Great Shape
* Heroes and Villains Part 3
* Barnyard
* The Old Master Painter
* You Are My Sunshine
* Heroes and Villains Part 4
* Heroes and Villains Finale (False Barnyard)

I'd like to include the "Eat A Lot" section, but I dunno.... my brain just keeps going "That belongs in Vegetables."  I don't like wedging it into H&V, even if it's labeled as a H&V section on the boxed set.  It doesn't fit.

DAMN, ARE YOU LUCKY!!

I've ALWAYS wanted these - especially "The New Album"!
140  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Nearly 16 minute edit of Heroes and Villains?!?! on: July 11, 2014, 07:03:42 AM
Rather than a chronological edit, though (since the song just comes off as a medley of completely unrelated fragments with no structure), why not use the common 10-minute configuration of H&V - essentially what's heard on the Odeon 'Smile' - as a base, and try to fit the rest into aurally pleasant spots?
141  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: What are the odds on an official Adult/Child release? on: June 17, 2014, 06:38:09 AM
I found a lousy MP3 rip of the "New Album" vinyl boot at one point... and I do like that album.  "My Diane" is a great opener.

"Marilyn Rovell" is pretty catch as well, but obviously Brian would overlook that song these days.
142  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Amazing SMiLE remix on: June 11, 2014, 07:19:24 PM
So they did a "The Beatles HATE" with it, essentially.  Very similar.
143  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Landlocked on: June 10, 2014, 08:52:59 PM
Yeah, I've seen that Capitol-esque CD... I dunno what album THEY had, but it sure wasn't "Landlocked"!

Several years back, I picked up the Dumb Angel Rarities version in a local record store, and I'm perfectly fine with that one.  (Shame the same label dropped the ball so badly on Adult Child though...)
144  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Favorite/Best Beach Boys-related book? on: May 13, 2014, 03:25:38 PM
I love "Look! Listen! Vibrate! Smile!", which is a great collection of press clippings from before, during, and after the Smile debacle.

Fittingly, the book is rather fragmented and collage-like, much like the album.

You forgot "Marilyn Rovell"!
146  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Adult/Child (Millenium Edition) on: March 10, 2014, 03:05:51 PM
The sad thing is, that stupid mix of the album with the looped sections and added snorts ended up on more high-level boots like the Dumb Angel Rarities series...

I believe the same folks did a "Smile Millennium Edition", which was the most ridiculously bad version of Smile I have ever heard.  Their "Heroes and Villains" had to be heard to be believed.
147  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Landlocked - soniclovenoize reconstruction on: October 16, 2013, 10:23:09 PM
My only request for you, soniclovenoize?  PLEASE redo your uncensored "In It For The Money" at some point! Smiley

Honestly - there's no reason to use ANY of the 1980's remix.  The demo build of the album exists in shining quality (and the correct speed), so you could use that version of "Harry You're A Beast"; not to mention, the second verse of "Mother People" exists on Mothermania, which is now out on CD.
148  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Cindy Oh Cindy on vinyl! on: August 21, 2013, 06:24:33 PM
Ah yes, Doxy - geniuses behind "The Beatles' First Single" (the first major exploitation yet of the two out-of-copyright Beatle tracks) and a remastered "Savage Young Beatles."

Oh yeah, that's a must-have....
149  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / A mix CD of Brian inspired tracks? on: July 16, 2013, 09:39:02 PM
I thought of tossing all the various Brian Wilson pastiches over the years onto one handy disc... any ones you can think of?  I only know a handful:

* "Black Sheep" by Dewey Cox
* "Trigger Happy" by Weird Al Yankovic (spoofs the surf period)
* "Pancreas" by Weird Al Yankovic
* "At My Most Beautiful" by REM
* "Back In The USSR" by The Beatles
* "Shorty Blackwell" by The Monkees - Yes, it's a terrible song; but it seems to be a deliberate cross between Brian's segmented style of the time and the Beatles' "A Day In The Life."

Is it wrong I looked past Brian AND Michael in that photo, and right to Micky Dolenz? :-P
