526  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Dennis Wilson's favorite song on: September 03, 2010, 04:27:04 AM
I wasn't trying to make light of Dennis' tragedy. Just curious why this song of all songs should be his favorite.

528  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Dennis Wilson's favorite song on: September 03, 2010, 04:20:29 AM
I read a caption in a mini TV doc that Dennis Wilson's favorite song should be "Every Breath you Take". I presume it's the song by Police, which charted the year Dennis drowned. Can anyone confirm?
529  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Are there enough unreleased songs for a Stars and Stripes vol.2? on: September 01, 2010, 01:57:53 PM
"Wipe out" charted quite high, I think.

#12 US, #2 UK.

That's surprising, as high as #2 in the UK. Would the Brits have remembered the Surfaris version, or maybe it was just the rap novelty. Oh well, The Beach Boys have a large and loyal fan base in the UK.
530  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Which covers of "Don't Worry Baby" do you own? on: September 01, 2010, 01:51:39 PM
Ronnie Spector (Brian was really excited when he found out Ronnie had covered it)
Everly Brothers
Lorrie Morgan (on Stars and Stripes vol.1)

I also know that Keith Moon and Iggy Pop have covered "Don't Worry Baby", my favorite song by The Beach Boys.

I bought Song Cycle on CD about 20 years ago, but traded it in, too quirky, I thought. But now I'm more open-minded.  Smiley

As a bonus track for a Stars and Stripes vol.2 they can add "Fun, Fun, Fun" which they recorded with boogie rockers Status Quo!  Grin

... those well known country and western singers!

And the Fat Boys, did they record anything other than Wipe Out with The Fat Boys? Some single B-sides?

"In My Room" w/Tammy.

Got that one, it's on a Tammy Wynette tribute CD.

That one is a duet with Brian only - the version featuring Brian and the other Beach Boys can be found on the "Nashville Sounds" DVD.

Will look for that one, thanks for the tip!  Smiley

The Wilson brothers should've just fodido off from The Beach Boys in 1978 to do their own thing together.

But would they have sold as many records then? Dennis' and Carl's solo albums weren't big sellers in the day. The Beach Boys are greater than the sum of the parts, that unique vocal mix which no one else has matched, although Assciation and Mamas and the Papas were pretty big, too.

Are there enough unreleased songs for a Stars and Stripes vol.2? I would buy a copy if they ever decide to release such an album. Just to hear the Beach Boys background vocals on a whole album, is worth the price of admission.

Now I want to get both Song Cycle and Discover America. I've already got Orange Crate Art and think it's wonderful.

Just go get 'em and pick up Clang of The Yankee Reaper too. Wonderful stuff. Van Dyke's voice may be an acquired taste to some, me I love it.

I'll get that one, too, thanks for the tip!  Smiley

Alt comics artist Peter Bagge has made a short animated spoof on Murry, it's on youtube.

I would definitely go see this picture, and enjoyed both Summer Dreams and An American Family. I think the actors who played Murry and Mike in the latter were spot on, in fact the thought of a biopic on Murry Wilson could be very interesting.
542  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: How cool is Al Jardine on: September 01, 2010, 08:17:33 AM
I wish Al Jardine great success with the new album, I really enjoy the Live in Las Vegas album, I think PT Cruiser is on there as a bonus track. I wish he would come to Europe, don't know why he canceled the European leg of his tour with Brian, but I guess he was too busy working on the new album. I've seen Al with the Beach Boys twice, in '89 and '92, I think.
543  Non Smiley Smile Stuff / General Music Discussion / Re: Hurricane Katrina and Fats Domino's house on: September 01, 2010, 08:09:30 AM
I remember when all of that went down, his niece or something put out a press release, or got in touch with the news organizations that the legendary Fats Domino was unaccounted for in the flood!

I was the happiest I'd been in months about a day or two later when I saw those awesome photos of him being carried out of his flooded house into a small boat by rescue crews.  HELL YEAH! Long live Fats Domino.

You know why the memorabilia doesn't matter?  ... because he can just make some more.  There's only one Fats Domino, though, the good lord won't make any more of him.  I was thrilled to see him get rescued.

I too was terribly worried about him for a couple of days there, it was a great relief to see that rescue, I think I saw it on the news.
544  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Beach Boys cult followings on: August 31, 2010, 07:34:42 AM
I got into the Beach Boys in '88 when Brian promoted his new solo album. In '85 a friend of mine turned me onto them, but I was still a devout Santana fan. Then in '89 I bought "Ten years of Harmony" and that summer I saw them live at Wembley Arena in London, my first BB concert. My friend was with me, and he had to tell me who was who. He borrowed a concert program and gave me a little history. It was a magical evening, beach balls floating over the audience, and I thought the cheerleaders idea was great!

546  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: VH1 s**ts on The Beach Boys on: August 31, 2010, 07:18:16 AM
In a top 20 it's only fair to have two artists from the '80s at least and two from the '90s. I nominate Michael Jackson and Prince from the '80s and Oasis and Nirvana from the '90s. The '00s I need to assess later.

'50s: Elvis Presley and Fats Domino
'60s: Beach Boys and Phil Spector
'70s: Beach Boys and Curtis Mayfield
'80s: Michael Jackson and Prince
'90s: Oasis and Nirvana

547  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Sean O'Hagan and the BBs on: August 31, 2010, 06:18:35 AM
I remember reading an interview with Bruce Johnston where he expressed an interest in a Beach Boys - High Llamas collaboration. I think it would have been tops! with or without Brian's involvement. But best with Brian on board as well, of course.
548  Non Smiley Smile Stuff / General Music Discussion / Re: Name 3 good things that came from the Yellow Submarine film on: August 31, 2010, 06:14:18 AM
1. Only a Northern Song
2. Hey Bulldog
3. The comic book adaptation
4. The toy submarine (in the original box)
5. Yellow Submarine Songtrack

I have a re-release of the toy of George and comes with the sub, I got it in the early 2000s.....left in the package...not nearly as cool as the original, I'm sure

Well, if it's an exact replica, it doesn't matter. Was it a licensed product or an apple product? Was Corgi the original?
549  Non Smiley Smile Stuff / General Music Discussion / Hurricane Katrina and Fats Domino's house on: August 30, 2010, 10:03:25 AM
Fats Domino has lost most of his memorabilia:

from http://oldies.about.com/od/oldieshistory/a/katrinadamage_2.htm

Fats Domino's house (1208 Caffin Ave.)
Why it's famous: From approximately 1956-1963, only Elvis Presley sold more records than Fats Domino. And unlike his brethren, Fats, a shrewd negotiator, kept most of what he earned.
What it is now: Fats has never made any secret of his whereabouts: his brown-and-yellow Ninth Ward house featured the giant initials F-D on the front, along with a star. It's as immodest as he ever got.
Depth of water: 6.3 ft.
Impact: Miraculously, Fats was able to return and restore his home, though most of his memorabilia is lost.

The $300 nostalgia trip:

from http://www.rarebeatles.com/photopg8/yellowsu.htm

The Beatles Yellow Submarine (movie comic), published by Gold Key / Western Publishing, 1968. Issued with a 12-1/2" x 20" Yellow Submarine pull-out poster (shown below). This is the second rarest Beatles comic value-wise, and very scarce in NM/Mint condition. Two NM+ copies turned up last year and promptly sold for $300.00 each.
