Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Did you ever sell a Beach Boys album, then buy it again later

I did it with "Summer in Paradise". Got the US edition when it came out, sold it after a few listens, then bought a second hand UK edition (better mix) years later. I've grown rather fond of the album, but I still think the drums are too harsh. If they recorded better drumming for this one, it would be a decent album. I particularly like the title song, "Summer in Paradise", with guest vocals by Roger McGuinn. Nice video for that one, too.
Another one that I sold, but will probably get again, is the "Trios" album by Rob Wasserman, with one track by Brian and Carnie.

I still hope Brian records that rock'n'roll album he's been talking about for years. I think he has already covered, or will cover, "Proud Mary". I know Brian still has a competitive spirit and wants a chart hit again. Bruce's suggestion is fine, and it will sell, like Rod's albums have, and I would buy Brian's, being a fan, but I didn't bother with Rod's albums. Natalie Cole's album was very successful and I might buy that, mainly for the Nat King Cole connection.

"Cool Head, Warm Heart" is my favorite of the three new songs, and I was thrilled to see my Mike sing it live. There are two earlier recordings of "Spirit of Rock'n'Roll", one with guest vocals by Bob Dylan - that one is better than the re-recording for the Hallmark album. But really, all three are great. First time I heard that song was Brian live on the 25th anniversary TV special, filmed in Hawaii.

This is the Jan and Dean band following the death of Jan Barry. A fascinating story of this band both before and after the death of Jan can be found in Bob Greene's book "When We Get to Surf City". A loving and respectful look at Jan and Dean and the supporting band that included some who graduated to the Beach Boys touring band in subsequent years. The SSAS website is also worth a visit.
Will have to look for that book, thanks for the tip, donald! The CD I mentioned is at least half BB tunes.

I tend to ration the listening to my favorite bands, but I don't think a year passes where I don't play the three B's in music, Beach Boys, Beatles, and Byrds. I'm really afraid that they might grow stale if I overplay them. I never listen to radio, but I sometimes surf the music tv channels for new tunes. Like Katy Perry's no.1 smash, "California Gurls".

I had no idea there were that many covers of "Don't Worry Baby" - perhaps it is the most covered of all Beach Boys songs?
I think "God Only Knows" probably has it beat by a country mile - much more user friendly. Yes, I think "God Only Knows" might have been covered more, it always gets the biggest applause at Brian's concerts in London, I know Claudine Longet covered it.

It's a nice collection with some good and even some very good material from Jan. "How how I love her" is one of the greatest ballads I've heard. "Hot looking lady" is a funky tune that could've been a hit imo (and it features Dean). Unfortunately some other songs are not as good and/or show how the cocaine addiction in the early 80s destroyed Jan's voice, which had impressively recovered before
But don't you think it warrants a CD reissue? Ideal for a label like Iconoclassic. Or Rev-Ola in the UK. I haven't heard it myself.

I bought both Japanese reissues when they were first released and have never seen or heard anything about US reissues until now, but I will get the new reissue of Youngblood for the bonus track single edit. And if they reissue Carl Wilson with bonus track(s), I'll get that as well.

Just discovered this rare 1986 cassette only release by Jan Berry. Now that "Carnival of Sound" has been reissued, it would be great if Rhino Handmade gave this a limited CD release. Another Holy Grail for Jan & Dean fans. from http://jananddean-janberry.com/boards/index.php?topic=50.01986

It's been a challenge and a struggle for me after my accident, to regain self confidence and independence. However, I have come a long way to produce and complete this cassette.
Many special thanks to the following people: My brother, Ken Berry, in assisting me with an office and sound recording equipment. My parents, Bill and Clara Berry for their patience, guidance and support in the musical ambitions that have always been with me throughout my life.
Sincerely, Jan

Gary Usher's 'Add Some Music' on Poptones is a superb Muzak album. It's on Poptones, out of print I believe. But I love it to death. It just has that tiny touch of BWs finest melodies to set it apart... guilty pleasure, but a great pleasure nonetheless.
I agree, lovely album! Poptones did a nice series including Curt Boettcher and Sandy Salisbury.

And yes, I am in a very pissy mood today. I have ample reason.
... and in that case I hope you're mood improves quickly Andrew, I sure prefer the more positive-humoristic AGD on this board. But I do think calling someone an idiot is slightly too overdone in answer to Googamooga's remark. I didn't read it as a sick joke or something. No need to over-analyse this one sentence. I didn't analyse, I reacted to an insensitive quasi-joke. That wasn't my intention.

I wasn't trying to make light of Dennis' tragedy. Just curious why this song of all songs should be his favorite.
You're an idiot. Dennis drowned. The song is called "Every Breath You Take". If you can't do the math, then you're a very dumb person. Or a troll, of which there seems to have been an outbreak lately. And yes, I am in a very pissy mood today. I have ample reason. Sorry about that, I didn't make that connection until after I posted.

You may have mixed it up with "The air that I breath". I have heard Shawn wanted this song to be played at the funeral because it was Dennis' favorite
BTW: Brian and the Beach Boys recorded a version of this song with Julio Iglesias
I see that it's on Julio's album "1100 Bel Air Place", but only background vocals by The Beach Boys.
