476  Non Smiley Smile Stuff / General Music Discussion / The Honeys' rare 1986 album, "It's Like Heaven" on: September 19, 2010, 09:40:35 AM
Here's a record we would like to see on CD:

from http://theblackseasurfer.blogspot.com/2010/03/honeys.html

and for the completist: an album released in 1986 «It's like heaven»
At this point I should warn you ...
Have a look at the sleeve and you know what's awaiting you.

Between the Buttons. I never listen to Between the Buttons--almost never the Stones at all, in fact, though I have been known to spin Exile a few times a year. One of those great albums that fits into the recent thread about whether we listen to the classics much ... and how I don't. (Speaking of frequent listening and not-classics, I've been loving the new Of Montreal, by the way.)

Oh, I like that one, it's got "Yesterday's Papers" on it, right?

MOJO freebie CD: "The Dawning of a new Area" - comp of original ska versions of Specials tracks. Some of those MOJO freebies are really excellent while others are complete throwaways.

Here's an MCA soundtrack for the film "Almost Summer" featuring Brian Wilson and Mike Love, a CD reissue is probably unlikely, but we can dream:

Arctic Monkeys - "Humbug" in digi-sleeve. My fave UK band of the past decade.

Bob Dylan - "Highway 61 Revisited" - stereo remaster. I'm going to buy the mono masters box!

In which case, would Blondie leave the Rolling Stones touring band and join the Beach Boys in a reunion?
Leave a more steady, well-paying gig to be treated more or less as a sideman/third-rate member with a volatile band who can't even agree on whether they want to do anything and is unlikely to do more than a couple of shows, tops, ever again? Why would he? So the half dozen message board enthusiasts around the world will cheer when he makes it more "authentic" (to those few years he had anything to do with this band with a five-decade life)? I think not.

Well, we know that Al would like to do a major tour, but that still leaves out the other guys. Say for instance the Rolling Stones only tour one last time, that's of course two years on the road, but if the Beach Boys do a world tour, that would also be lucrative for Blondie. It depends how he feels about the Beach Boys gig and his role as a one time full member of the band. He's got no history with the Rolling Stones other than the last tour, I don't think.

I read someplace online that the Stones ARE touring next year. But....

I know the Rolling Stones are planning at least one more world tour, but I didn't think they'd be ready by 2011. A Rolling Stones World Tour is a massive undertaking.

To sing the lead on  "Don't Worry Baby" - Adrian Baker.

To sing "God Only Knows" - Bruce or Brian.

Who's got the rights to the second album? If they were the biggest band in South Africa, there must be a market for this stuff. I quite like the Flame CD I've got, but it was a needle drop and rather muddy at that.
488  Non Smiley Smile Stuff / General Music Discussion / Re: What are you listening to? on: September 13, 2010, 02:50:18 PM
Lonnie Johnson - "Steppin' on the Blues" - music for the wee hours...

I'd say the only CD reissue of anything Flame that was a LEGAL CD was the 1994 South African "Best of the Flames".

That might have tracks from the second album. I'll look for it.

Hey Googa, you ever hearda Figueroa? He played percussion and sometimes drums in the 70's when Dennis was too drunk or coked out to play. Kowalski had trouble keeping time - he out-stayed his welcome a few years.

Yes, I've heard of Bobby Figueroa. I'm not that well read on the live history of the band, but I find it odd that Kowalski could serve as long as he did, if, as you say, he wasn't that good a drummer. I just suggested him because I want the reunion to be as historic and authentic as possible.

BTW I haven't been able to find any Ricky Fataar albums on CD, except the Flame album, produced by Carl Wilson. Are there any Ricky Fataar solo albums on CD?

No. Because there are no Ricky Fataar solo albums, period.

Do you know if there are any other Flame albums reissued on CD? I think there was a second Flame album, but whether Carl had any hand in it, I don't know.
492  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Will Blondie Chaplin and Ricky Fataar be part of the reunion? on: September 13, 2010, 02:26:24 PM
If Ricky can't drum, then perhaps Mike Kowalski.

If Ricky can't drum, them please God, ANYBODY but Mike Kowalski. How about the current drummers, John Cowsill... or Mikey D'Amico ?

Yes, John Cowsill is a good choice, because he can also sing. But "Help Me Rhonda" should be sung by Al, of course. Wasn't Mike Kowalski the longest serving BB live drummer?

I've read in the news that the reunion could be at least Brian, Mike, Al, Bruce and David, and that is as good as we can hope for, but if Blondie and Ricky could join as well, it would be perfect. I know Blondie is with the Rolling Stones and Ricky tours with Bonnie Raitt, but as the Rolling Stones are not likely to tour next year, I think the Beach Boys should ask Blondie to join. We need him to sing "Sail on Sailor" on stage, that song is a must. If Ricky can't drum, then perhaps Mike Kowalski.
495  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Brian charts at #55 in UK album Top 100 on: September 13, 2010, 01:42:25 PM
The best way to advertise Brian's new album to the UK public would be to book him on the "Later.... With Jools Holland" show. This is the only really high profile music show on British TV that does not cater strictly to the Lady GaGa type crowd.

Has Brian never been on Jools Holland? I'm surprised, because he's featured such a broad range of artists on that show. I used to watch that show in '95-'96, and I think BBC Entertainment shows it in Europe.
496  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: How well would a Beach Boys album with/by Brian sell? on: September 13, 2010, 01:39:42 PM
Well, the Beach Boys have already made a reunion record with Carl's vocals, "Don't Fight the Sea", and I am sure they will find other vocal takes by Carl that they could use. It doesn't have to be all new songs. Imagine a BB record with contributions by all surviving members and archival takes by Dennis and Carl.

Portishead's third - "Portishead", very dour and spooky. I thinking I'm going off Portishead now.
498  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Brian charts at #55 in UK album Top 100 on: September 13, 2010, 10:10:18 AM
Music press reviews are probably more effective for an artist like Brian than TV advertising anyway.
499  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: How well would a Beach Boys album with/by Brian sell? on: September 13, 2010, 10:07:55 AM
Instead of doing covers, they could use songs by Mike, Bruce, and Al. Make it a collective BB album like Sunflower or Surf's Up.
500  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Did you ever sell a Beach Boys album, then buy it again later on: September 11, 2010, 03:46:07 PM
Not an album but I did sell my New Zealand Pressing of "Sound Of Free" (to one of the regulars here) and it took me several years to find another copy.  I learnt my lesson.

I'm now aware of four copies in captivity.

I don't know that one, is that a BB related album or song?
