That drawing bears little to no resemblance to Brian Wilson.... I thought it was intended to be someone else entirely until I read the caption.

So, where does countertenor fit into the head voice vs. falsetto discussion?

I don't recall ever hearing a BB sing in countertenor, but Fleet Foxes uses it.

Memphis, about go onstage for their show that night, which was actually scheduled for April 17th at the time of the shooting. According to AGD's site, they were in Nashville instead.

I was living in Memphis at the time. The BBs wound up playing there a week later than originally scheduled, on April 24th.

Just finished Lloyd's book. The only good thing I can say about it is that there are some great, previously unpublished photos of the guys in it.

The rest, well there are lots of self-repetition, at least one factual error (regarding where the BBs were when MLK was shot), and plenty of sleaze that doesn't add anything worthwhile to the story.

2456  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Carl's increasingly amazing vocals on: September 20, 2010, 08:13:18 PM
Carl could (and did) put chills down my spine singing scales for vocal warmups. What a VOICE!  Love

He and Alan both added a deep warmth and richness to the BB's vocal blend.

i'd love if brian did "busy doin nothin" live.

He did it at one of the CWF shows.

2458  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: How well would a Beach Boys album with/by Brian sell? on: September 13, 2010, 10:54:00 AM
compare Oxygen to the Brain and MAD to 'Desert Drive'...which would you prefer?

I'm sure it makes me the exception, but I prefer "Desert Drive" -- really! I'm not a fan of MAD (it's just not my kind of music).

2459  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Bruce Johnston's idea for a new Brian Wilson album... on: September 10, 2010, 11:10:17 AM
If Brian does get round to doing a rock record I hope it is with a producer who hasn't got PS on the brain, if not it will just end up as more of the same.

I agree -- I'd love to see Brian do a new rock album, without any PS-influenced tracks! The PS-esque tracks on his other albums are the ones I play the least.

I'm not a fan of "standards" (especially with orchestral backing) at all.....

2461  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Brian's Autobiography on: September 06, 2010, 12:55:52 PM
I have heard from reliable sources that Carl had Dennis staying over with him in Colorado for a few days in December '83.

Calling WIBN an autobiography is a huge stretch in my opinion. Brian deserves better, and so do his brothers. Carl was slandered libeled in the book, imho.

2462  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: BWRG 2nd week - #53. on: September 05, 2010, 09:20:10 PM
I don't think ever-fluctuating poll ratings of the current (or previous) occupant of the White House has any relation to whether Brian deserves the Gershwin Award or not. Frankly, I was very surprised when McCartney (a non-U.S. citizen) got the GA last year, ahead of Brian. Brian is overdue for that recognition, imho.

Just got an email from Amazon saying the release has been pushed back to November (that will teach me to preorder....).  Sad

Nah, it looks like an acronym to me, like Seven Minutes in Limbo Extended.  LOL

2465  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Beach Boys cult followings on: August 31, 2010, 10:28:15 AM
One thing I do find "cultish" is spelling Smile with all caps except for a lower-case i, in an attempt to ape the logo. As a graphic designer, that bugs me. It's not a secret handshake, rather it's a fannish affectation, imho.

There's spam in at least a couple of the boards.

Quote from: Ron
I doubt Al Jardine has been within 200 miles of Charlotte, NC since he WAS in the Beach Boys.

Al played a private (corporate) show in Charlotte back in 2001. I was there.

On the Knebworth GV, Carl is singing "We love you, we love you, I love you, we love you," etc. at the end of the riff. It's all kinda buried under the other vocals and instruments.

2470  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Latest interview with Mike (some reunion content) on: August 26, 2010, 04:25:30 PM
So seriously, he wasn't born in Peoria? And is the adoption story also made up? And "Benjamin Baldwin"?  That sounds fishy to me.

There was an article last summer in the Lake Oconee Living magazine (forget which month exactly, may have been June) with an interview with one of Bruce's half-sisters here in Georgia. Yes, Bruce was adopted and Baldwin was his original last name. He's apparently related to THE Baldwin family in Georgia (think founding fathers of the USA, not modern actors).

And Bruce was born in the metro Chicago area. You do the math.

2471  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Brian gigging with The Beach Boys 1984-1996 on: August 24, 2010, 10:15:48 AM
I was at the Nashville Fan Fair show. Brian was onstage for the majority of the time.

2472  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Brian gigging with The Beach Boys 1984-1996 on: August 23, 2010, 10:49:35 AM
If it was 1990 -- wasn't Mike in Japan, on his own tour?
2473  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Are There Members Here Who... on: August 23, 2010, 09:17:09 AM
I was in the ballpark agewise. Here's my story:

Yes, I was a Beach Boys fan already, got hooked on "Surfin' U.S.A." and the Surfer Girl album when they were new.

I loved Today but didn't like Pet Sounds (felt PS was music for an older demographic than myself, which means I was too young for it).

The Beach Boys were never only about Brian for me. I loved the whole band and was always interested in hearing what they had to offer, regardless to my reaction to individual tracks.

I loved "Good Vibrations" and "Heroes & Villains." However, I got sick of the media hype surrounding Smile. The hype had reached what I considered to be obnoxious levels, and I didn't trust the hype in the first place. That impacted how I felt on hearing that Smile was canceled and pretty much ended any curiosity I had about the music at the time.

I was puzzled by Smiley Smile and fell head over heels for Wild Honey (which I still consider the best BB album).

After hearing Carl's take on "Surf's Up," I certainly hoped they would succeed in resurrecting Smile, but didn't really put any expectations on it happening.

When the majority of the Smile music finally saw the light of day in the BB's GV box set, I discovered that I really liked the music. I think Brian's 2004 version of Smile sounded best as a live performance. I'd still like to have a Smile sessions CD or box set see official release.

There's definitely some promotion goin' on -- I just heard BWRG thanked as a sponsor on NPR, also saw an ad for BWRG twice during the same program on a cable channel last night.
