Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Carl's Guitars

The image above of Carl playing the signature model Rickenbacker is actually a photo illustration/composite. I'm the photographer for the original shot, taken in Valdosta, GA on Halloween 1986. Carl was playing -- ahem -- another company's product in the original shot (let's just say the original ax was blonde). Rickenbacker flew in the new guitar for the ad.
Carl did not live to see the signature guitar when it was released, but he was still here when Rickenbacker approached him about his signature model, so he had input into the design of the final product.

Carl was left handed? Yes, indeed. I'm married to a southpaw, so I'm more likely notice them. (BTW, the younger Carl Wilson is a lefty too.) He played guitar right-handed, which is not very easy to do for a southpaw (having tried my hand playing left handed).
My southpaw hubby says he prefers playing right-handed because he gets to chord with his strong hand. Might have been something similar for Carl. Wonder if David Marks would know?

From footage I've seen, he would kind of hit the left hand with sort of a karate chop action. That would put extra weight on the bottom notes, make them stand out more. In the right hand, he really liked what my old piano teacher called "crushed chords." That is, very cramped tonal clusters, and he also seemed to like to follow certain shapes around. Adam, thanks for your thorough analysis of Carl's piano style. Do you think his being left-handed was a significant factor in his style of playing?

Here's an interesting interview with the director of the TAMI show, Steve Binder, that lends some insight into why the BB's performance went missing for so long: http://www.spinner.com/2010/03/22/the-tami-show-dvd/Steve Binder says: "There was a big legal battle going on as to who owned the television rights, the motion picture rights, international rights. Then it was compounded when [Murry] Wilson, the father of [Beach Boys] Brian and Dennis, demanded that once the film made its initial distribution run, he'd take the Beach Boys segment out. Somehow, Dick Clark got involved, I don't know how or when. I have a suspicion Sargent must have said, 'Hey, I'll give you the television rights.'"

I'm not afraid, Howie's not afraid, AGD's not afraid. No awards necessary. However, at least consider the fact that we're not spewing from the hip with no possibility of accountability. That should be worth something.
It is worth something in these parts. Many thanks to all three of you for your ongoing scholarship, one of the things that makes this board a valuable resource.

Something is irregular with this board.
I'm getting to the board on an average of every other day. It's not resolving with my ISP all the time. When it's down, I can't even get a ping on the domain name. And I haven't been able to get to this site on campus for over a week.

I've been having the same problem with connectivity. Sometimes I can get this site and sometimes I can't, all within the same day. This has been going on since last Thursday.
Is there someone who can please contact the site owner and see what's going on? Thanks!

A very clear assessment of Carl's situation, well done! Carl Wilson was a trooper right until he breathed his last. He was, by far, the most levelheaded man in the group. And he was one of the lucky ones who was around to receive all of this adoration from his fans, rather than receiving it posthumously. The last time I saw Carl, in June 1997, was a profoundly moving experience. He used GOK as a means of reaching out to the audience, to tell us how much he appreciated us, his fans, by locking eyes with individuals in the crowd and singing the verses directly to them. At the end of the song, a group of us stood up and yelled "We love you, Carl!" in unison. He bowed to us. Other fans held up signs of support and he acknowledged each one of them. He was a consummate trouper to the end. God Save Carl Wilson.
Amen, brother, amen!

I think Carl loved performing too, and that was one of his major motivations for staying with the band. I think all Carl's decisions were perfectly understandable and justifiable if you walked in the guy's shoes. Yep, you're right on the money, Adam. I totally agree with that assessment.
