Happy Denny Day to one and all! It's a good day to break out POB and Dennis Wilson Forever.

Nicely done -- and with some stop-motion animation, to boot!

There are several Grammy children's music categories....  Wink

2429  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Favorite song about Brian? on: December 01, 2010, 10:38:54 AM
Carl's "Like a Brother" by Beckley-Lamm-Wilson.

I recently listened to it on a comp someone made called Endless Christmas, (containing BW/BB/ML Christmas tunes with Wendy/Carnie and Jeff Foskett tracks).

Yes indeed, Carnie and Wendy's "Hey Santa," with backing vocals by Uncle Carl, is one of my favorite Christmas tracks.

Another way of looking at the matter is the BBs and Brian have a long history of recording in a diversity of musical styles, some of which may not be to everyone's taste. Just because I'm passionate about Wild Honey doesn't mean that everyone else is.   Grin

Carl Wilson vocals = dark chocolate  Grin

9.  What made Carl return to the band?

Something interesting about Carl stepping away from the band temporarily -- the reports about his departure always made it sound like he always intended to return to the BBs, citing his issues about rehearsing more, not playing so many resort venues, etc. as conditions for his return.

2434  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Carl Wilson's YOUNGBLOOD reissue on: November 01, 2010, 12:43:05 PM
Emdeeh, is that because Brother Records owns the rights to the first solo album?

What I've heard is that reissuing Carl Wilson is more complicated than reissuing Youngblood.

It would not surprise me to find out that there are rights clearances of some sort involved that will take a while to resolve.
2435  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Carl Wilson's YOUNGBLOOD reissue on: November 01, 2010, 10:23:17 AM
The remastering is excellent, there is so much more clarity to this album. I thought the remastering for the tracks used on the Long Promised Road comp was an improvement, but this release is so much more so. Billy's liner notes are well-written and heartfelt. There are a couple of new photos (by Craig Janos) from Carl's '81 solo tour. Caribou artwork and logo are screened on the disc itself.  It's a very nice package, overall.

As for Carl's first solo album, there are no plans to reissue it for now. I agree that "Heaven" deserves to have the same treatment as Youngblood, at the very least a remastered version on a BB's comp.

Are those the generic Rock Band characters in the vid?

Is anyone going to see VDP in Athens, Ga tomorrow?

What, no one accused him of lip-synching again?  Grin

2440  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: No good vibrations for Beach Boys fans..Lip Synch Claim on: October 25, 2010, 02:02:20 PM
Sheesh! Now it's been mentioned on BBC2.

After viewing the YouTube video, I don't see how anyone could think that's lipsynching.

I have the DVD. Carl's there, but he mostly hangs around in the back line. Not much face time.

Jon, was that recorded with the Summertime Blues Band?

I thought Brian on Mt Vernon & Fairway sounds like Cartman.

Also Brian on "Child of Winter."  Smiley

That drawing bears little to no resemblance to Brian Wilson.... I thought it was intended to be someone else entirely until I read the caption.
2446  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Mike's Falsetto? on: October 03, 2010, 09:18:21 PM
So, where does countertenor fit into the head voice vs. falsetto discussion?

I don't recall ever hearing a BB sing in countertenor, but Fleet Foxes uses it.

Memphis, about go onstage for their show that night, which was actually scheduled for April 17th at the time of the shooting. According to AGD's site, they were in Nashville instead.

I was living in Memphis at the time. The BBs wound up playing there a week later than originally scheduled, on April 24th.

Just finished Lloyd's book. The only good thing I can say about it is that there are some great, previously unpublished photos of the guys in it.

The rest, well there are lots of self-repetition, at least one factual error (regarding where the BBs were when MLK was shot), and plenty of sleaze that doesn't add anything worthwhile to the story.

2449  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Carl's increasingly amazing vocals on: September 20, 2010, 08:13:18 PM
Carl could (and did) put chills down my spine singing scales for vocal warmups. What a VOICE!  Love

He and Alan both added a deep warmth and richness to the BB's vocal blend.
