1301  Smiley Smile Stuff / Polls / Re: Beach Boys Survivor #8: Summer Days (And Summer Nights!!) on: October 25, 2013, 11:04:56 AM
Let's be honest here, this album will be hard to dismantle.  Fall Breaks, Disney Boy, doing - what are you doing?  You are going for one of my favorites here.  I posted just the other day on my love of Summer Means New Love on the best inst. thread.  Have to say you got the right, but it is my main reason for not taking part in the earlier albums.  Too hard to pick.
So, don't throw stones...
My honest first pick has to go to...Help Me, Rhonda (single version)
1302  Smiley Smile Stuff / Polls / Re: Beach Boys Survivor #9: Beach Boys' Party! on: October 25, 2013, 10:42:56 AM
I love this record.  This time I'm in from the start...
Nothing they picked as far as covers was bad.  Were they under the sway of The Beatles, or what?  We All were.  But, I was not much of a Dylan fan back then (I sure am now).  And, that's the way I'm gonna do this.  The way I felt when it was just out.  November 1965
My pick is The Times They Are A-Changin'

Klaas,  Let me try that again.  You are on to something here.  The easiest way for the printing plant to change the plate, was to leave off SOS lyrics, and change the song list on the left side.  Notice too, that *side one*is not printed above Steamboat, that was removed as well.  Then remove the WGL lyrics from the second plate, where it would have been in the old running order. simple.
Also note, our UK copies have the p&c1973, while the USA p&c1972.  I have a second USA copy in storage, when I get a chance I'll check to see if it has a corrected lyric sheet that adds SOS.
Hate to see the changing of order on those that added the EP to side two.  Those side a/b opener/closer songs meant a lot to an artist in the vinyl era.  So LTT, now opened side two, right?
peace,  Will

Hi Klaas and bgas,  When Freddie checks back in on this thread, he will surely be super clear where he stands on the lyric sheet deal.  I'm not sure why my UK copy has no lyric sheet or EP art sleeve, I got it sometime in the mid-80's.  I'm happy with my 1st pressing USA copy, even though it doesn't have the SOS lyric.  I know those words by heart anyway.  If I did buy it again, I'd get the Japan MLPS cd, and then have an interpretation of the words, as only those transcribers know how. LOL

I think most releases had the inlay included, whether with or without the SOS lyrics (depending on it being a later issue or not). I'm vry curious if we'll ever find an early testpressing which actually has the We Got Love lyrics included. After all, the empty space between the Saga- and Trader lyrics must have been intended for the WGL lyrics, right?

There are a few foreign pressings that didn't include the EP though: South Africa (even the writer credits on the sleeve at BW's pic are removed!), and I think Israël. The original Spanish release has the EP added to the LP. Same goes for the Epic vinyl reissues (both Dutch and Spanish pressing), with The Trader being shifted to side A.
O, and for later issues, the EP's picture sleeve was often replaced by a Warner of Reprise company sleeve.

Hi John,  Yeah, I do remember you posting somewhere that he was a favorite of yours.  Good on 'Ya.  I'm on his list, guess they did not offer that in America.  But I'll get it.  All the listings here are from UK dealers.  You were a lucky fan to be in the UK, were he did most of his tours.  I only got to see him twice, both times in the early 90's when he was living in Chicago.  Both of my shows at The Great American Music Hall.  He was easy to meet too, as he hung at the bar between sets.  His sets focused on mostly the 70's material, I guess because he toured here less.  Funny story... I discovered him, not from his flawless early albums, but because the band America put Head and Heart on their 2nd long-player, I think it was.  Says to myself, right I'll have some more of that.  Most of his early records were very hard to find here, even though I was living in San Francisco...ah, memories pre-internet.  After it was just CD releases, it took me two years to find On The Cobbles.  Now there are only two I don't have:  And and And...Live.  I did have a sharp eye back when, seeing that plain blank cover  that just said Live at Leeds, not signed but it's one of those first ten thousand.  I should have taken it to one of the concerts, I did get him to sign things, but was worried it would get damaged.  Those were bars he was playing after all.  You keep up the work with your writing and walking.  All the Best, Will

I apologize in advance for sounding like a crank. I fault Capitol / Universal in the small picture and the degradation of quality manufactured goods in the big picture. Specifically for music, many/all (not many left) of the majors release archives as cash grabs. The product is treated with beefed up volume, compression/limiting, NoNoise, etc. and mass produced by low-bid manufacturers that have little quality control. The result is clipped songs, mastering errors, glitches and whatever other issues that degrade the consumption experience (at least for me). The companies do not care because: fans will still buy products, sound quality is a lax issue (thanks to mp3, portable devices, and the decline of interest in home audio systems). The company will get paid and the retail outlets will be left holding the bag for damaged goods (easy for a giant like Amazon, not so for indie outlets).

I avoided MIC specifically because EMI gave me a chincy booklet that was poorly assembled with my Beatles Mono box (not a pirate copy) and TSS was delivered with glitches on three discs thanks to the case the discs are housed in. My point: anyone pissed about this box should take it up with the company who is releasing it. They need to hear how shabby their products are.
Hi,  Wait, what?  The Beatles mono Box was perfect.  I bought two, and it's already worth big bucks (I'm keeping one sealed).  I have a Sgt. Pepper yellow vinyl issue from Holland (the mid-70's IIRC), they put in the insert, but not the swirly inner bag.  The mono box did.  They all had inner bags, of the period.  They are "as released" in the UK -You got the first issue from Japan, right?  My only complaint was no Let It Be, cause then we would have got that booklet.  No, that is perfect, Capitol/EMI has always played favorites with the Beatles.
Sorry about your TSS box.  My CDs were fine, and went right into MLPS plastic inner bags, like the ones they used on the mono box.  In most cases they will fit back in the slots.  I have them on anything that comes in a MLPS cover.  Yes, they are sh*ts for not giving them to us in the first place, but protect the investment man.  I get mine from a place called Dusty Grooves.

If you thought MIC was a tough buy, that's nothing.  I'm trying to fit the new John Martyn Box into my budget. It retails for over $4oo, and best deal I've found so far is $350.  And you are right, for now The Suits got the juice on collectors.  Soon even the collectors will give up.  Not yet for me though, I'll have that box by Christmas...
And thanks guys for helping to keep this bubbling toward the top.

Strangely silent indeed! Literally. I'm gearing up for a show in Houston this week with a live score to my collage flick "Silent Shadow of The Bat-Man" - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j6LtbEWwcfc   -- so a bit distracted, back to normal by Sundayish!

...but I am messing with editing a crazy swirl of Wild Honey right this very second! Along with I Know There's an Answer.
Hi,  Took me awhile to get back from the movie.  Evil Holy Halloween Bat-Man! Nice to see you checking in.  Went to the geniusboy...site, and watched both parts.  I'm Impressed. Hope the mods don't mind if I break into the thread a bit, the Oakland show is probably still going on... so, this is the same movie with a new score?  I'll watch the rest of the hour-long take tomorrow, It's 1:30am over here on the east coast.  Good Luck in Houston.

Winged figure of Vengeance.

I got to get to bed, the reviews will be in soon.  Here's your thread back.

Very positive.  This is different, moving, some of the earlier reviews had more humor, but now that Brian is raising the bar with Pet Sounds, you can feel him hitting a stride, the serious writers are coming out.  ontor has been strangely silent so far after attending this show...I'm sure he's still under the sway.  The magic of sharing a room with Brian and this set must be powerful.  You can almost live the show in this review.  Really Good.  Thanks for posting Ed.

Personally, I'd bump "Do It Again" in favour of "Mona Kanai"

Christ almighty, what's with the consistently disturbing photos of musicians as an avatar? Why this picture of Syd?
Thanks runners,  I noticed Rei had changed his name and avatar, but couldn't figure out Who the hell it was.  I've never seen a late in life photo of syd.  Yikes!

EDIT:  Freddie I left you a note on my original post about the Holland lyric sheet.  back on page 7
I could be mistaken, but I'm fairly certain thatwhat Smile-Holland ( Hi K!) meant, in reference to your edited note, was that his UK LP had the lyric sheet;
NOT that there was ever a lyric sheet for the EP.   (That's something that doesn't exist )

Hey bg! That's correct. I was referring to the lyric sheet for the LP. There was no (separate) lyric sheet for the EP.

Let's Go Away For A While
First off, thanks KK for making that banner.
While I like all those early surf instrumentals, these float easily to the top of my list.
Let's Go Away For Awhile * Not only perfect on Pet Sounds, this is used to great affect on Neil Young's JTTP soundtrack.
Pet Sounds * Edged out, but no less beautiful, it rocks in a gentle way.  As noted, this works great live.  My favorite track on Brian's Live Pet Sounds.  A highlight on the current tour too, whoever is taking the lead guitar.
Summer Means New Love *  And your Dreams Come True should have been the follow.  Who kept picking those joke tunes for seriously dreamscape sides?  By this point Brian had become a master craftsman of orchestral-pop.
Nearest Faraway Place * My thoughts mirror Sheriff's, but I can't put it over the first three.  He may have been going for Brian's style, but came up with one of his own.  Bruce was not the only one using the "music box" idea, John Phillips, and I'm sure others had toyed with it.  It sounds like it was recorded inside a kaleidoscope.  I've never heard it, but have read it was done live - remind me if you know.  I always liked Bruce, right up to when he seemingly gave up on writing.  My 1-2-3, are:  Deirdre (with Brian's help - let's not argue that here), NFP, and At My Window (his most perfect vocal - thanks Al and Brian for sharing)
As for adding one with vocal assist, that would be Passing By.  And the reason Diamond Head is not here on my list, that's because I agree; Brian was most likely just waving his hands and mind in the air...

Thanks for the info and pics, bgas!
Hi metal flake paint and bgas,  I love what you guys have.  Why did they use the same picture over and over so much?  I don't collect music sheets, but a friend let me pick a couple of his.  And what did I choose?  Why Barbara Ann of course (the pale orange one), I do love that 45.  The other is one in bgas' collection - I'm a Big Todd fan, so Good Vibrations it was.  That Todd/Brian sketch is nowhere else I know of.  bgas, I guess you know that's really a Todd sheet LOL And Barry's first three were okay, You got the Vogues one... and they're cool, right?  If I had one to pick from your stuff, it would be that Girl Don't Tell Me with the color pic.  I love that.

A Todd Sheet?  No way!  Brian wrote it, and he's on the front. He simply let Todd have some of his glory for the day....
Cool Guy right...
1320  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Brian with Jeff Beck Fall Tour Dates on: October 21, 2013, 02:33:38 PM
Another thought about Beck is,  if he is on most of the tracks on the new record, how can Brian not have him available to do a promo tour?  Might bode well for those hoping for more of this next year, or getting it to Europe and beyond.  They should start working in more co-BAD/Beck into the final set, and with some lead vocals.  I keep saying it, add Blondie into this more.  Many are saying his all too brief appearance is "the" highlight.  Soulful vocals is what Jeff went for in the early days/JBG.  This pairing is working for me.  Brian could do anything with this, did someone mention Friends - TM would Rock, Brian loves the sax rides, or more from Wild Honey?  Say, How She Boogalooded It or A Thing or Two?  Get deeper in!!  Jeff is fantastic and unique in his style.  Looking at the set lists, maybe a bit too much of his fusion stuff and nothing from the four Jeff Beck Group albums, nearly anything from the third or fourth would work.  Not to say I don't like most of what he is doing.  He is just not following Brian's lead in mixing up the sets more.  There's really no reason these shows couldn't run three or more hours, with Brian getting a little nap in between his part.  The reports show lots of folks are coming to see Beck, with ticket re-sellers pushing it as a Beck head-liner.  He is doing a great service for his career here, as he did with the Clapton Guitar Festivals.  Every one of those has come out on DVD, and sold very well.

Thanks for getting back so quick.  I know you are dealing with the store directly, as well.  I had Amazon put a note on my account.  I'm hoping Mark might read this and get the ball rolling.  Since nobody is posting for two weeks now, maybe we have not waited long enough.  I do hope there are more than just a few of us who care.  I'll post too if I hear anything.

We told Emi about this and they found there was a problem with the manufacturing of disc 3 and are repressing the disc. They will replace the defective discs , and I expect them to announce how to get the replacement soon.

Mark Linett
I want to bring this back up to the top.  I have spoken to Amazon America about this in the last few days.  I want to use mine for comps, and disc 3 does need to be changed.  They tell me I am the only one to mention it.  They were quick to offer replacement, but I told them that won't work for this.  Is this even going to get a second run?  Has anyone been able to get a replacement? anybody know more?

While you were posting, I was adding edits.  I commented on That's not Me - Unless it's used heavy, it doesn't bother me.  If that is auto-tune on the others, I guess I just can't tell.  Where it really bothers me, is when it's set so high that I can no longer tell who's singing what.  You can read page after page of "name that vocal line" threads around here.  And that's not too hard with stuff pre- 2000, and I'm not talking about just TWGMTR, McCartney is drenching his vocals with it on record and live.  Makes me sound like my parents..."it all just sounds the same."  Judy Collins can still sing like a bird, so I know it's not all auto-tune.  I find a lot of my old very favorites, Crosby, Stills, Garfunkel, and many more are really talking their way through tracks, or recording them a word or phrase at a time.  Reminds me of what they did with the old Doors Live record.  Paul Simon is one of the few who can make that work.  But, I don't want to derail the thread going on.  I've stopped buying their records though, and it isn't just auto-tune at the bottom of it, in all cases.  They are old.  I would not trade in the times I got to watch Brian back in the 70/80's, when he wouldn't sing much, but boy did he sound great banging it out on a real grand piano with the Boys.  I do think that this current tour is the most inspired singing he's done in a while.  He is still a great show, for his age.  Whatever he is doing to make the DVDs sound so good vocal-wise - TLOS was a stand-out, hope he keeps putting those out.  This tour should be recorded and filmed.
1325  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Brian with Jeff Beck Fall Tour Dates on: October 21, 2013, 05:58:37 AM
Holy Autotune, Batman!
Justin, see you are up early, working hard getting more clips up, thanks again.  That's Not Me was a little rough, But Caroline, No = Great vocal from both Brian and Jeff.  You Still Believe In Me - great, great, great, nice vocals from everybody.  You, Bubbly, and ontor, are lucky guys.  seltaeb, I was thinking, of all these clips we are seeing from the BAD tour, that they are not using live auto-tune.  You think they are, or that Brian needs that?  Hope I can soon hear the whole Beacon show.  Where did you find the CT show?  I tried to find what KittyKat was talking about, but all that seems to be is a two minute edit mash-up.  If they do record one of these for dvd, I hope they just let it run raw.  It was my biggest complaint about the C50 tour, not to mention the TWGMTR record.  Again, you did a great job Justin, and because you were so close, none of those pesky bathroom breaks folks moving in front of the camera.  I'm sure you all were just focus front, holding the edge of your seats.  Well, except you Justin...since you needed one hand to hold the camera.
