Haha I just assumed the Beach Boys did a crappy cover of Tutti Frutti that I hadn't heard (just like I haven't heard Under the Boardwalk). Like I said, I was just going by what wikipedia had to offer. A more comprehensive listing would probably prove to be a more interesting read. But as it stands it offers a lot of stuff that most greatest hits" releases do but also includes occasionally overlooked tracks like "The Nearest Faraway Place". I've removed Tutti Frutti from the original post.

I was bored and made a playlist of beach boys tracks that reached number 1 or 2 on the charts somewhere in the world. I also included their b-sides. Completely basing this on the discography info on wikipedia, so it may not be 100% accurate but it is an interesting listen. Gets really crap towards the end there haha. 1s 2s As Bs 1 Surfin' Safari 2 409 3 I Get Around 4 Don't Worry Baby 5 Help Me, Rhonda 6 Kiss Me, Baby 7 Barbara Ann 8 Girl Don't Tell Me 9 Sloop John B 10 You're So Good to Me 11 Wouldn't It Be Nice 12 God Only Knows 13 Good Vibrations 14 Let's Go Away for Awhile 15 Do It Again 16 Wake the World 17 Cottonfields 18 The Nearest Faraway Place 19 Getcha Back 20 Male Ego 21 Wipe Out (with The Fat Boys) 22 Kokomo Edit: removed 'Tutti Frutti' because it isn't a crappy beach boys cover like I assumed.

Fun fact: How many people do you know have The Beach Boys sharing a cd shelf with 2pac, Pink Floyd Marilyn Manson, Frank Sinatra, AND Brian Eno? How about Nirvana, The Beach Boys, A Tribe Called Quest, Radiohead and Andy Wiliams? That's a sample of what I have! How about The Beach Boys, Megadeth, Frank Zappa, Immortal, Captain Beefheart, Death, Captain Matchbox Whoopee Band, The Strokes, Yes

I get a real kick out of watching Dennis drum on the Knebworth DVD. Man is he hitting those skins hard or what? The intro to California Girls is priceless... ***BUH BUH BUH BUH BUH*** I really like his drumming style throughout his career but I'm sure there were plenty of concerts where he was too far out of it and played quite sloppy (hence the extra/sober drummer).
Trying not to steer away from the topic at hand... but Ringo was a freaking awesome drummer. I think his playing and influence goes beyond being the "perfect drummer for the band he was in". Not saying that Mike's Beard was leaning towards it, but I've never understood the "Ringo was an amateur drummer" argument.

I can imagine how terrible this song would've sounded in the context of 1979!! But for some reason I have decided that in the context of the music of the last ten years... somehow it almost sounds modern. The music sounds like it wouldn't be out of place on a Daft Punk album (who sample a lot of late 70s/early 80s disco synth funk http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MJPdVVOmbz4). Not that Daft Punk are my kind of music, but they are very popular and well respected in the 18-30 age bracket. In saying that, there are lots of cheesy parts that tear the song straight back to a bad disco track from a band joining the band wagon too late. The sax solo is lame and Carl's vocals immediately make it sound like a band of men approaching middle age. Sampling and remixing of old songs wasn't really happening in 1979... but this track woulda been so much better if they samples the original vocals and um... made it less crap. I started this post thinking the song was actually better than most people think it is. I am listening to the track as I am writing this and I am changing my mind. Whoah, I just hit 8mins30secs and it turned into a disco-polka... genre defying!!

I agree. Though I think the song is great and very, very underrated. I was probably discovering the greater Beach Boys catalogue in the very early 00's whilst still at high school. At the same time I was getting into bands like the Strokes. I had read reviews online that said How She Boogalooed It was utter crap, but I loved it. It seemed to fit in with all the other new music I was getting into.

Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Describing Dennis Wilson's music to a typical music fan

Jesus with a hangover produced by Spector with a heart.
That is freakin' awesome! Haha! My friends and I have a longstanding mantra... WWDWD? or What Would Dennis Wilson Do? I'd say it's a mix of... classic beach boys, drunken outpours and cocaine jams. The beach in winter. What the Beach Boys should've been doing (or at least what some of their music should've sounded like at that point). It sounds authentic. Dennis Wilson acts his age.

Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: 50th anniversary latest

This is what Mike originally said (or what he was quoted as having said, and there's been no claim that he was misrepresented):
"We began in the fall of 1961, and our first tour was in 1962, and it’s been nonstop since then. Now we’re gearing up for the 50th anniversary, and Brian Wilson, who has been working on some unfinished Gershwin music project, will rejoin us. I’m sad that Carl Wilson passed away 11, 12 years ago from the same lung cancer problem that claimed the life of George Harrison. That was not a fun time for us. But I am happy that now my son Christian is in the group. Yes, the lineup has changed over the years, but it’s been pretty consistent the past several years. “
Here is a perfect example of where I struggle to deal with Mike. I truly want to like him. I love the Beach Boys in part because of him and what he contributed. However, this is a perfect example (IMO) of where he uses poor tact. Why does he always have to bring up the Beatles? Whether its pointing out that he was in India (with John, Paul and George) in 68', or writing Back in USSR with the guys (so he claims), or here in this poorest of uses, comparing Carl's cause of death (lung cancer) with George's death. People die of lung cancer all the time, every day, everywhere. Sorry, but I really think Mike tries to include a link to the Beatles to gain public appreciation. You may disagree, but ask yourself, why does he have to mention George's death? Why couldn't he just say that Carl died of lung cancer? Sorry, but I think its poor taste in conversation and its (unfortunately) typical of Mike. Is it just me?
It's not just you. But boy, I'm surprised at how few people pick up on this. Yeah, that is pretty disgusting. Sounds like he is saying saying "We're as good as the beatles, we even die the same way". Let the Beach Boys stand on their own merits, you don't need the Beatles to boost the Beach Boys status. Anyways, back to the reunion... I like the idea of the old boys hangin out and harmonising together on film. Maybe recorded to tape as well. I can picture a CD release even of the boys/men/grandpa's doing a classy set around the piano consisting of beach boys songs, some favourite covers, some four freshman tunes... sung only by the beach boys (no backup musicians/vocalists) and done in a way that suits their current age. If done right, it could be a popular album (for the over 50s market). As long as they try and aim for the oldies market. Don't want to make anyone cringe, but I'm thinking of the success of such hits as the Rod Stewart "great amercian songbook" style (or whatever he did). But somehow the beach boys tend to miss the mark.
