Amazon price just went up to $170.82 Sad Though I would buy it no matter how much it cost!
Also, it is now down to #11 on the amazon charts.

Surf's Up 1967 may very well be the biggest revelation this box has to offer.

Maybe it's the "just me and a piano" track Brian talks about as potentially filling the B-side of his February "Heroes" mix?  He says to the reporter that he "tried it last night."  And a Smiley-type incarnation?  Words don't exist to describe how insanely amazing that would be.  Brian knew how good the song was, so maybe he wanted to have a version just for himself, for posterity.  Why the December piano version wouldn't fit the bill for that, I have no idea, but it isn't too crazy to think that he revisited the song at some point in '67.

I agree though, that is easily the most curious thing to emerge from the track list thus far.

Time for me to chime in...

I have it from a very reliable source (who heard the box set in its near-finished state) that this track is indeed a piano-and-vocal version of "Surf's Up," played on Brian's uniquely tuned piano, that Brian cut during the "Wild Honey" sessions, for reasons unknown.  While this version is identical in basic structure to what we already have, it is said to contain chord changes and key modulations that are not present on ony other recorded version of "Surf's Up," and left my friend "speechless" when he heard it...

HOLY CRAP!!!

Pretty good that these four tracks take up one whole side of vinyl too.

9. Wonderful (Side Two)
10. Look (Song for Children) (Side Two)
11. Child Is Father of the Man (Side Two)
12. Surf's Up (Side Two)

What a side!

What does this mean?

- Stereo mixes and session highlights (not available on CDs)

It means that the second lp has stereo mixes of some tracks and excerpts of studio sessions NOT included on the five CDs in the box!

will these be on the second CD of the 2 CD release?

Looks like I'm going to have to buy a new turntable.

Oh yes. I need a new stylus on my old turntable!

I don't know whether to trust Amazon's delivery date for us over here in Western Australia. My stuff always takes aaaages to arrive... though if I buy from Amazon I will choose whatever the highest priority shipping is. I find it really hard to deal with waiting for an item to arrive when it might already be sitting in the music shop down the road.

Besides that... HOLY CRAP BALLS! This is gonna be AMAZING!
I can't wait to get this thing and listen to it about 3 or 4 million times... and then... make my own SMiLE mix!

105  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: What kind of organs/keys were used on Pet Sounds, Smiley Smile etc. on: August 22, 2011, 04:08:12 PM
There was a completely different organ used by Dennis on "All I Wanna Do".

And I bet it wasn't a Baldwin. (Sonic pun. Sorry.)
the baldwins appear to be larger organs (especially the black ones), and they look more professional. organ maintenance was important to the wood, and his audience. maybe he didn't need to use one, but im sure he tried it out once or twice. wish we had some photos from that session

Oh dear.
106  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / What kind of organs/keys were used on Pet Sounds, Smiley Smile etc. on: August 20, 2011, 11:52:41 PM
I'm trying to produce some music with a slight Pet Sounds vibe to it... but I'm also genuinely interested in the make and model of any organs the Beach Boys used throughout the mid-late 60s. Can anyone shed some light on the kinds of organs used on Pet Sounds (or any other album for that matter)?
107  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Did \ on: July 04, 2011, 06:49:47 PM
I've been meaning to talk about this topic for a some time now. A few months ago I ended up with quite a few recordings of The Beach Boys on their 1972 tour, and many of the shows featured Dennis's unreleased "I've Got A Friend". After listening to the various versions several times, I suddenly realised that "I've Got A Friend" and "Holy Man" sound very similar. At least to me they do. Listen to this version, for example. Especially starting around the 3:54 mark and continuing to the end of the song. http://www.youtube.com/user/1backoffice#p/u/33/n0RuQLN-Z2c

So, what do you guys think? Did "I've Got A Friend" evolve into "Holy Man"? Or is it just a passing coincidence?

Damn!

They would of course have to release it digitally (both mp3 and lossless versions) and on vinyl.  Afro

Uh-oh! Movie of the week time. Ahhh!

http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/river-road-prepping-brian-wilson-205150

River Road said film will take an unconventional look at Wilson's unique musical process as well as his struggles with mental illness, and how he managed to persevere as an artist with the love and support of his wife Melinda.

That sounds GROSS!
110  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Brian Movie Bio Announced. on: June 23, 2011, 10:27:23 PM
I like the idea of focusing on one specific period. There are so many to choose from. I think it would make for a great film. I really enjoyed Nowhere Boy about John Lennon's childhood.
Imagine an entire film based on the period in and around the Holland period. That could be really interesting. I am already picturing scenes with Brian staring blankly at his hotel room wall in Holland. It may sound like watching paint dry to some though.

Thanks a lot dylz.
If I'm not mistaken, you're one of my you tube friends right?

Possibly. Maybe I've commented on one of your videos... but that coulda been on this board somewhere.
112  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Ol' Man River info on: June 21, 2011, 06:29:17 PM
Cool. I haven't heard much about the history of Ol Man River. Did Brian have a similar obsession with this tune as he did with Shortenin' Bread? How many different versions or takes are out there? I've only heard the twofer version and the Hawthorn version.

I've done a cover of The Beach Boys version of Ol Man River.

Dude! Great work... again! I've listened to many tracks on your youtube channel. It's uncanny! You have the most authentic sounding beach boys vocal blend out there in my opinion.
I'm from Perth too.

114  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: So what do we know is in the Smile Box set ?? on: June 06, 2011, 05:24:53 AM
I stopped buying CDs years ago. These days, I only buy vinyl and I choose to do so for all the usual reasons people say they like vinyl. I DO listen to my records regularly and most NEW records I buy come with a free digital download. So I've got my big, beautiful 12" album art and great sounding vinyl as well as my digital music-to-go on my ipod. Vinyl seems to be growing in popularity and most of the new bands I get into have released their music on vinyl. Hooray!

Oh, and I can't wait to get SMiLE on vinyl!

And yet, I'm happy to report I had a really GOOD experience, back on June 17, 2008, when I walked into my local Borders store.  After a couple of minutes looking for the POB/Bambu Legacy Edition, a helpful young stocking girl asked if she could help me.  I told her what I was looking for, and she knew right where it was on her stock cart.  There's someone who knows her business!

When I was about 17 I bought the Live at the Roxy CD. As I handed it over to the even younger girl at the counter, she looked at me weird and said...
"Is this for, um, your dad or something?".
"No... it's for me"
"Oh"
"Yeah"
"Really?"
"Yeah"

Just great!

Interesting. One of my other favourites and another ex-Capitol band, Megadeth has a 5CD 3LP box set coming out on the same day. Maybe that is Capitol's designated deluxe box-set day. For those who share the same polarised taste in music as myself.... here is the amazon pre-order
117  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Deluxe One-Fer reissues... on: April 20, 2011, 06:19:47 PM
...would be pretty sweet! I imagine there is enough "bonus" material out there to release each album seperately with it's own bonus tracks, outtakes, demos, mono/stereo mixes etc. Probably not on the cards at the moment, but it would've been a great 50th project. I feel the Two-Fers force you to group albums together rather than view them isolated in their own context. I want Whistle In to be the end of my Smiley Smile experience, not a sudden jolt into Wild Honey. Ideally the bonus tracks would take up a second disc then too. Imagine a deluxe copy of Sunflower with outtakes.

These are just dreams, but does anyone know if there are any future reissues planned... this decade perhaps?
118  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Any singers you can think of that sound like The Beach Boys? on: April 19, 2011, 07:20:48 AM
Fleet Foxes

Some will differ but that band has almost made a career from rewriting You're Welcome a couple o' dozen times? (I love them by the way...)

Haha! I can see that.
They have a song on their new album that has a real Phil Spector vibe (instrumentally at least) http://youtu.be/Mtx7zLRM8t8

This guy sounds like every one of the Beach Boys at the exact same time:

Wow! This guys is pretty great. His version of Hushabye is pretty special. http://youtu.be/xpgfIwQkw_Y
From my side of the world too. I wonder if he is in any of the local Beach Boys tribute bands.

119  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Any singers you can think of that sound like The Beach Boys? on: April 17, 2011, 11:58:27 PM
As far as singers whose voices sound like members of the Beach Boys (rather than bands that are trying to adopt a similar style)...

I'd have to agree with Don_Zabu. Panda Bear from Animal Collective sounds a lot like a mixture of Brian and Al at the same time. This is best demonstrated in the song Comfy In Nautica http://youtu.be/25_gjUbvqNg

Taylor Hawkins does do a good Dennis too.

The main vocalist from The Besnard Lakes has a decent falsetto that occasionally sounds a little bit Brain (without trying to) http://youtu.be/C5i3z2Wv-Qs

That's all I can think of at the moment.

120  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Denny -- The Group's Strongest Vocalist? on: April 07, 2011, 12:38:15 AM
Dennis beats Brian 1974-current.
121  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: 20/20 Redux! on: April 04, 2011, 07:27:40 AM
I also often disregard 20/20 as just an album of songs slapped together with no context.

But then when I actually listen to the album... it plays like the best beach boys compilation out there. It's almost a summary of their music in the 1960s. You've got the surf music (Do It Again) and the other hits (I Can Hear Music, Bluebirds), which I'd excpect to hear on many 'best ofs'. Then there are all those gems. Tracks that wouldn't been right at home on Friends (I went To Sleep, Time to Get Alone and maybe even Be With Me), one of the beach boys only true rock songs (All I Want To Do) and to finish it off... two amazing SMiLE tracks.

122  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: SMiLE T-Shirt. Nobody here interested in this is there? on: April 02, 2011, 11:10:22 PM

Ummm... I'd rather have some ninja stars.
123  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Nirvana Vs The Beach Boys - Smells Like Sloop John B. on: March 28, 2011, 07:20:25 AM
I actually play in a death metal band and shock people on a weekly basis when they find out that the Beach Boys are my true passion haha.
I have played Farewell My Friend live between some serious heavy metal madness. Great juxtaposition and great (if not confused) response from the crowd.
124  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Interesting home made mixtape: 1s 2s As Bs on: March 28, 2011, 07:18:03 AM
I was bored and made a playlist of beach boys tracks that reached number 1 or 2 on the charts somewhere in the world. I also included their b-sides. Completely basing this on the discography info on wikipedia, so it may not be 100% accurate...

Should be.  Wink

Sorry. Should've said "may not be 100% complete" as they only show the results for five different charts. Is there a resource for global chart positions of beach boys singles and/or albums?
125  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Interesting home made mixtape: 1s 2s As Bs on: March 28, 2011, 03:03:39 AM
If they had covered Tutti Frutti however, I can imagine a Brian Wilson farty synth romp with him on smokey, shouty lead. A sorta Ding Dang / Shortenin' Bread vibe.
