Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Is Bambu all that great??

Big Star's 3rd (Sister Lovers) is basically unfinished and it's rightly hailed as a classic. Hopefully Bambu will be too someday.
I just looked up those three albums you mentioned above, and ater reading about them I'm rather curios. Do you have any more examples of "tortured/wrecked epics"? Chris Bell's "I Am The Cosmos" is a pretty tortured and amazing epic. My favourite Big Star related release. It's more of a compilation rather than an album... but it flows pretty awesomely. The title track is just the best. http://youtu.be/kR594Kkxmzg

Thanks. I have been a big fan of Denny's since I was 6 (about 21 years ago). I am also a fan of "too much reverb" as you will find with my recordings of my own music. I make a lot music for many different band ideas that I have. As a result of my inconsistent musical tastes I have a few projects in various states... some of them are online. The latest band idea de jour is a early 60s garage/surf band. We've had a few jams but nothing online yet.

Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Smile vs Smiley Smile Budget

Good point. Spending so much time and money on recording an album that didn't come out would've surely been a major factor on the budget sound of Smiley Smile. However, I'm glad it worked out like that. I just wish the "big budget" H&V and GV were left off Smiley so it would've been more cohesive as an album. Just needed a few more trippy, laidback organ numbers.

Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Box Set delays in Australia?

I went to Planet in Mount Lawley (over here in Perth) and they had the 2cd set... I read through the liner notes but am waiting til I get the nod to come in and pick up the box set from my mate at JB. I think my housemate downloaded it cos I heard SMiLE coming from his room last night (and he usually listens to Sting or Christopher Cross). BOX SET SOOOOOOON. COME AWNNNN!

Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Box Set delays in Australia?

A mate of mine that works at JB recently said the box set would arrive today or tomorrow (Thursday).... but I called a couple of places here in Perth today and they said the shipment has been delayed til next week (however, the 2cd set will be available on Friday). Not sure if it's just Perth or the whole of Australia. Anyone else heard anything?

so there's no need to go through the trouble of making any new fanmixes unless purple chick releases "the beach boys present brian wilson presents smile 2: higher quality edition" I disagree. I have never made my own fan mix and am waiting for this box to do so. I also expect bucket loads of new fan mixes after the box set! It's a new era of Post TSS fan mixes!

It musta been so much more rewarding to get your hands on this stuff back then. I mean, any music fan can find it on the net almost instantly, which is good for those who want it NOW... but it's almost too easy. Less rewarding to just download a crumby set of mp3s. It would've been quite exciting to get a new SMiLE boot back in the 80s or 90s. I read one of your recent posts AGD about traveling to a mate's place just as a box of SMiLE cassettes arrived. You guys must've shat your pants listening to new stuff coming in dribs and drabs.

Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Upcoming books?

I am dying to read "Recording The Beach Boys" by Mr. Desper. I remember reading the bulk of that Desper Archive somewhere... so informative and so enjoyable to read! A whole book of it would be awesome. I am eagerly awaiting the reissue of The Real Beach Boy and am holding off reading the original pressing until the new one comes out. So i really hope Mr Stebbins and Mr Desper can find the time soon to finish off these books! I hope someone writes a book about Mike Love: The Teal Beach Boy

Having not read either of them, I am eagerly awaiting the new addition of Stebbins' The Real Beach Boy and Desper's book. Is there any news on these books? Are there other books that are in the works that I should be anticipating? Also, I'm about to get a kindle and there seems to be a lack of BB ebooks available.

The casual fan will pick up the two disc set. The hardcore fan will shell out for the box. s and pieces in high sound quality that we can cobble together with bootlegs and whatever else to make our own version of the album. The bottom line is the people who are putting these sets together know what they're doing period.
Besides casual/curious fans and hard core beach boys fans like us... there is also a whole world of general music nerds that will NEED to own the smile box. I have "music nerd" friends (all in their early 20s) that aren't massive Beach Boys fans BUT will be picking up the box set.

Aussie Aussie Aussie OI OI OI So... we may actually get it before some of these Amazon customers. But who knows how much it will be? I've got a guy on the inside at JB HI-FI. He's gonna let me know price etc. as soon as he finds out.

this is a masterpiece, that exceeds Sgt Pepper to offer a simple opinion. and I love my Beatles.
This album is arguably the greatest pop album ever made, it breaks my heart they couldnt finish it. But I am very happy it is finally getting its day.
I agree and I'd like to add something. Now, I love SMiLE a lot more than I do Sgt. Peppers but I just feel that it is not as commercial as Sgt. Peppers. I'm not saying that like its a bad thing. Sgt Peppers, to me, is a lot more straight forward. But SMiLE? SMiLE is just pure ART! I feel the same way about Pet Sounds. This is true pop art. The Beatles were amazing of course... but nothing touches Pet Sounds and SMiLE. Nothing!!!
