I think doing a festival like that will be a good way for the BBs to garner some new fans who never paid attention or took them seriously. The experience might also be a good influence on them as they will have the opportunity to see a lot of younger groups doing their thing. This is all very cool.

With them doing some high profile gigs like the Grammys and now these festivals, it's a fantastic way to remind people of their legacy.  Throw in the archive releases, which I hope get the same treatment as the Beatles catalog...this should regain some respect that Beach Boys had lost in the last 20 years.

Ha! Man, I went to this festival last summer for Buffalo Springfield. Hilarious the Beach Boys are playing, one of America's oldest running institutions at what has become one of America's new institutions for festivals. INSANELY hot and dusty @ 'Roo though...  :3d

I hear you. Like Danny Glover's quote... "I'm too old for this sh*t". That is no longer my idea of a fun time. I hope they are coming to Philly. I guess we'll see tomorrow.

I'm from Knoxville, TN, which happens to be the home of the company that books the roo, and I will attest to the fact that TN in June is HOT AS HELL!!!

Even still, I'm strongly considering going to my first Bonnaroo!  There are some good acts playing this year alongside the boys.

A couple of thoughts,

Taping is generally allowed at Bonnaroo (at least the years I went) so tapes from their set should be available after the show.

Several tapers have started using Ustream and live broadcasting the shows, If a link pops up around then , I'll be sure to share it.

The Bonnaroo website has been live streaming select acts the last several years (multiple cameras and a soundboard feed). Who knows, maybe the beach boys will do it, I think it would be great exposure to a younger crowd.

I was talking with a friend today about something similar. We were wondering if any shows would get streamed (like Brian's Stockholm (?) show a few years ago) or made public in some way. Their first performance is at a jazz festival and those things get filmed for TV from time to time. I would love to have some material of the boys at the end of the year

The heat is compounded by being in the sun 12 hours a day and then camping in the heat! And its dusty. And it takes a long time to walk anywhere on site. But! Its a really really really fun time. Last year they had classic artists like Loretta Lynn, Wanda Jackson, Buffalo Springfield and they all went over well. If you are in Knoxville though you could go home at night after the fest.....best of both worlds

Great. Do you know if it will be archived for later listening ? Let's hope they'll play the BBs

EDIT:
Just checked out WWOZ's site. Very nice radio stream right now. Good ol' Jazz and not this modern free jazz (I can't stand the latter very much). Love it !

We currently have not begun working on contract agreements for JF, however we tend to focus on the WWOZ Jazz Tent and the Blues Tent. Thanks for listening!

The Beach Boys Facebook page still lists 6/9 and 6/10 as Bonnaroo performance dates, but the Bonnaroo website only shows the Boys performing on the 10th (3:00 - 4:30 PM). Is Sunday the only day they'll be there?

Most likely yes.

Bands usually make one appearance during a festival weekend.  There are a lot of other bands there to perform.

Bonnaroo 2012: The Right and Wrong of This Year’s Lineup

The Wrong:

The Beach Boys: Sure, we understand that The Beach Boys are (mostly) living legends, but in 2012 there’s just not a lot of liveliness coming from the pride of Hawthorne California. After a disappointing performance at the Grammy Awards one wonders what long-dusty favors were called in for them to claim solid stage time at the Roo. With all due respect to John Stamos’ side gig, we’d have much rather seen this spot filled by Prince, who was heavily rumored to take part in this years’ affair.

I'd like to know what the author thinks after the boys' performance

If they continue the tour in the manner that audiences experienced them these past few weeks - they will be a highlight of Bonnaroo. And they'll be hip.

I think they should change their set list for this Festival. The crowd is young, many hipsters, many hipsters like PS and afterwards, so the setlists should be mostly PS, Smile, Sunflower, Holland and Love You. Ofc there should be a good 10 song selection of earlier songs, but this crowd does not want to hear 6 car songs in a row.

Fingers crossed for a progressive setlist which is more like that of the early-mid 70's!

I guess they haven't rehearsed enough material to produce a significantly more 'artsy' set list for just one festival. They might shorten the set list and drop a few of the surf/car songs, that's the possibility I see. Then there's a high enough density of material which is considered valuable by hipster websites and magazines and they will be successful. Besides, the band rocks anything they play.  :)

That's exactly what I thought when I saw this booking. I highly doubt the hip festival crowd wants to hear "409" or "Little Honda," or "Surfin' USA." Hell, I'm a big Beach Boys fan (why else would I be here?) and even I don't listen to those songs on my own volition. It'd suck if they went out there and proved to be the stereotype of what so many people think they are: a bunch of old fart has-beens who never got beyond the musical candyfloss of their earliest work.

Mike has always said that he gets his pop culture education from his daughter these days--hopefully she tells him how different the Bonaroo crowd can be.  I can't imagine they'll change their set way too much considering all the songs we'd want them to play for this gig aren't in their current set.

Yeah, Mike's daughter ain't hip in that sense. She's way too mainstream.  :hat At least that's what I gather. But no worries, the reunion has been managed splendidly so far, that's why I think they will rock Bonnaroo, FSHO.  :3d

And I think that a good live rendition of "Surfin' U.S.A." would go down well with any crowd.

Well Foster The People isn't exactly mainstream pop and she had dad listening to them a year before they performed together on the Grammys.  Plus they are also playing at Bonnaroo.  The line separating the Grammys crowd and the music festival crowd isn't too far off.  Separated yes, but these days these music festivals are slowly becoming a place to "be seen at", so let's not assume it's overrun by snobby music hipsters that know better.

Can you read? You bolded the least important part of that phrase. Let me correct it for you. I said, "the stereotype of what so many people think they are: a bunch of old fart has-beens who never got beyond the musical candyfloss of their earliest work."

Where does that imply that I, a Beach Boys fan, believe they made jejune music in the early days? It only states what many people, fans and non-fans, know: that a lot of people write the Beach Boys' music off as immature pop songs about surfing, cars, and girls. Do you, in your Beach Boys myopic fandom, really believe that lots of people--especially young people--don't think that way? Especially the hip festival-going types?

Once again, you either accidentally misread that or can't read very well at all.

Can you choke? You said earlier in that worthless screed that "even I don't listen to those songs on my own volition" (should be "OF my own volition", Poindexter), which leads one to think that indeed, you are comparatively dismissive of their early work, which is totally fine, but it is also fine for me to disagree and find that viewpoint surprising. I also don't know what book you took "jejune" from, but that was a laughable attempt at impressing yourself. People who are "hip", I mean truly hip, are highly aware of the greatness of the early Beach Boys hits. At that particular festival, most of the crowd, as with any other mainstream music festival, want to hear music they already know. Same with Coachella, Glastonbury, any of them. They'll love Surfin' USA.

This is my greatest fear. They must never drop Add Some Music, I Just Wasnt Made For These Times and All This Is That, it would be utter disaster.
The way I see them pleasing the crowd with not too far a deviation from current set:

Surfer Girl
All Summer Long

You're So Good To Me

(They could also add something nice like "On My Way To Sunny California" or "Cool Cool Water" or "Darlin"(darian on lead) or another cut from PS or even Wild Honey/Friends/Love You). Dream scenario is "All You Wanna Do".

They should ONLY do Barbara Ann if the crowd is loving the earlier work and if Mike does his Papa Oom Mow Mow part (the songs redeeming line!).

I can't believe things like this are said on a supposed Beach Boys fan board.

Can you read?

I don't even know where to begin detangling that clusterf*ck of logorrhea; wait, should I use a simpler word instead? Apparently when I use adult words like "jejune," it gives you a reason to disparage me, as if learning new words through reading is in some way a reason for attack. How do you learn new words, going to thesaurus.com?

As far as me not liking songs like "409," "Barbara Ann," et. al., so what? Does that mean I think they have no merit, or to quote myself, that they are musical candyfloss? No, it means I don't like them, simple as that. I don't think they are devoid of any redeeming qualities, I just don't like them. Just like I respect Schoenberg's "Pierrot Lunaire," but wouldn't listen to it unless there was a real compelling reason to do so. All I said--and I stand by it still--is that I believe that a crowd of young people who consider themselves musically hip would prefer hearing music from "Pet Sounds" and beyond as opposed to the relatively less adventurous earlier works. You can disagree with that position, but don't twist my words into something I didn't write. If you disagree, and believe the hipsters at Bonnaroo would in fact dig Ba-ba-ba-ba-barbara Ann, so be it; but don't accuse me of saying the early Beach Boys music was facile. I did not say that; I only said that it's my belief that the perception that they are exists. If you don't see that, than you've obviously not spent much time outside of the temples of Beach Boys worship.

For a long time, I didn't care for the pre-Pet Sounds material that much. In fact, in 17 years of being a fan, I've only started to appreciate their earlier work a few years ago.  Now, I like pretty much all of it minus the debut album.  It's your opinion, and you're entitled to it. Hell, everyone loves Don't Hurt My Little Sister, yet I hate that song with a passion. We're not all going to like the same sh*t. Doesn't make you any more or less of a fan.

I love the pre-Pet Sounds material, in fact I think quite a few song such as Please Let Me Wonder, Kiss Me Baby, All Summer Long, Surfer Girl etc are on the same level as Pet Sounds, besides that I never get tired of listening the many albums released in those years. Anyway if the Beach Boys were to perform more of there "hip" material I would love to see a setlist like this. ;)

1. Do It Again
2. Break Away
3. Surfer Girl
4. In My Room
5. She Knows Me Too Well
6. The Warmth Of The Sun
7. Kiss Me Baby
8. Please Let Me Wonder
9. Darlin’
10. Aren’t You Glad
11. Cottonfields
12. Good Timin’
13. Wind Chimes (with extended whispering winds coda)
14. Friends
15. Don't Worry Baby
16. Time To Get Alone
17. Let The Wind Blow
18. Country Air
19. Wonderful
20. Can’t Wait Too Long
21. Vega-Tables (Al singing lead)
22. I Get Around

(Intermission)

23. Add Some Music
24. All This Is That
25. Feel Flows
26. Caroline No
27. I Just Wasn't Made For These Times
28. Marcella
29. Cool Cool Water
30. This Whole World
31. All I Wanna Do
32. Sloop John B
33. Wouldn’t It Be Nice
34. Forever
35. Sail On Sailor
36. California Saga/California
37. Heroes and Villains (including cantina section)
38. Surfs Up
39. Til I Die
40. God Only Knows
41. That's Why God Made the Radio
42. California Girls
43. Help Me Rhonda

(Encore)

44. Good Vibrations
45. Surfin’ USA
46. Fun, Fun Fun

I couldn't quite manage to fit in Johnny Carson for all 12 of us who would get it. ;D

See the thing is they are doing even Barbara Ann properly. It has a sax solo just like The Regents version. Brian plays bass and seems to enjoy it. It's good!

Let me quickly add that hearing the current band play the older songs, and my experience at Brian's 23 Oct 2004 solo show, has made me love most of the early stuff. In fact, my current favorite song right now is 'All Summer Long'.

The early stuff is boss ! Nothing as great as the early Beach Boys with Brian being in full control of his powers and still evolving. It's some of the most creative popmusic ever. Those harmonies, arrangements, productions and compositions...wow. Added to that the joy they bring to the music. Again, there's nothing like the early stuff starting especially with the Surfer Girl album. imo. not to put the later music down. I love that and think it's fantastic but it all builds on the early years and how they learned to make records then

After that Leno apperance, I can see Mike Love put on his Clint Eastwood face and say "I'ma gonna kick Bonnaroo's ass and I want everyone to see it!"   :smokin

I wonder if each band had to pay some kind of fee or amount in order to allow their performance to be broadcast?  Or maybe some kind of term or restriction that the BB didn't agree with or something they didn't wanna pay?  I'm honestly digging for SOMETHING for why they would back out...but coming up empty handed.  Without any good reason we'd have to chalk it up to just the simple: they didn't want any sub-par ill-recieved performance to be broadcast all over the internets.  They were nervous about it so they backed out.

They are gonna release a 'Beach Boys live 50th anniversary tour' on DVD and it will go on the market sometime soon.

If they would allow streaming some people would certainly record it and then it will circulate the internet and damage sales of the live material they are releasing thus compromising profits and also their reputation if Bonnaroo performance is sub-par. they want their best to be out in the open, not something average or below.

This is why they are recording several perfomances, to capture a good one, with good crowd etc.

They might record Bonnaroo and eventually release it, but at some later stage (and if the recording is good enought).

What it really means is they won't release a DVD without re-recording any parts, in a studio, which they don't feel are up to their standards

Hopefully the reason they held back on broadcasting this was because they intend on using the footage for their own DVD release of the Festival.  Ha..yeah right!

I don't think they will, they have the whole schedule of live streams up for the rest of the day. And there's only two channels. No sign of The Beach Boys being broadcasted  :-\

Well, here's the thing.  Look at the schedule.  They're massively behind.  And, the Boys perform right after Gary Clark Jr, on that same stage.  Maybe we'll catch a glimpse?

Seeing the BB bass drum isn't a sign of them reconsidering the broadcast, the crew have just setup their equipment right behind Gary Clark Jr so it'll be a quick change between sets.

Yes, obviously, it was just a joke.  I just thought maybe we'll catch a glimpse of them on stage.

Well, nothing.  No glimpse, though I noticed underneath the video on the feed that a few people wanted to see the Boys. Oh well, let's hope there's some good video.

Good to see a lot of hype on Twitter for the Beach Boys.  Lot of (young) people counting down the minutes till they hit the stage in 40 minutes--which is pretty cool that a lot of people have chosen the BB as part of their last day festivities before heading out of the festival.

Yeah Zach, collecting the setlist info from user PhanArt as the songs are played

Just checked out his tweets, add Barbara Ann, Why Do Fools, Don't Worry Baby, Little Deuce Coupe, and TWGMTR to that setlist.

@awde_one just want you to know that brian wilson literally fell over during the beach boys set today...

 :-\ Hope that's not true

The Beach Boys might be the most well-mixed band I've ever heard live. Also, I'd like to adopt Brian Wilson. #beachboys #Bonnaroo

About 10 people just started streaking during the Beach Boys. Oh my god this festival

I'm going to say no.  No doubt it was a random comment from someone at the show (or maybe not at the show) who didn't know what was being played and/or drunk.  No doubt it was a standard BB show.  Had they covered it...Twitter would've exploded with comments from everyone.  It was just one guy who posted it so...probably didn't happen.

What a freaking amazing show that was. I don't even have words right now, I'm still in awe over it! This whole festival thing is so not my scene, but today the atmosphere at the stage was incredible and I loved every second of it. I also managed to get in the very first row behind the pit, along the rail, probably less than 50 yards from the center of the stage. I hope all of y'all who went had fun!

I was SO paranoid yesterday because the weather forecast said there was a 60% chance of thunderstorms all day. The only time it rained noticeably was during God Only Knows...it seriously lasted pretty much only the duration of that song and then stopped.

Good lord, that was amazing. Can't say it enough!

Ah, see, a *real* hipster would embrace a song like Kokomo ironically, in much the same way that novelty acts like Rolf Harris got a fanbase of indie kids in the 1990s...

Oh gosh, the video I took would probably make you dizzy because of how shaky it is, but I'll see what I can do. No promises, though! :D

By the way, no Arcade Fire cover.

Brian played bass for Barbara Ann and Fun, Fun, Fun which was cool!

And it was Mike who said, "As we used to say in southern California: that was bitchin!" I don't know what prompted whoever it was to say/tweet that Mike was acting like a douche...maybe because he kept talking to the crowd, but he wasn't being douchey. He was awesome, IMO.

When Help Me, Rhonda started I shouted at Al to sing from his heart...I'm just gonna tell myself that he heard me, because he sang the hell out of it ;D

It was also neat to hear everyone acknowledging Brian when he was introduced, whenever he sang solo, or when he got up to play bass.

That's a fantastic picture, and so is the one with Brian and those girls. I wish I had seen their bus! Do they tour with three buses? My aunt said she saw a bright green one, an orange one, and another one being escorted into the back of the festival by police cars and she thinks it may have been them.

Maybe it's because I come from a hardcore background, but these festival performances seem so much more intimate and energetic than the seated solo shows. Having all of my senses assaulted by the amazing music, the smell of perspiration, people moshing to music, it doesn't repulse me, but makes me feel alive  :rock

Thanks for the setlist ! Typical festival-set just like Jazz Fest. I think "Marcella" could've gone over well but who cares after such great reactions.

Al Jardine posted this on facebook:

Looks like some gig!

Is this the largest BB audience in recent years i.e after Live Aid one (Brian's Glastonbury gig was probably more)

It's truly great to see that kind and that size of an audience into the Beach Boys, it's like everything is coming full circle. Then again, with a few tweaks and changes, it's such a testament to the *music itself* and those musicians on stage  that these folks were hanging on every note of songs whose average age was 45+ years old.

In a world where "hit" artists barely last a year before their follow-up radio single drops and flops, that is pretty amazing.

Great stuff. :)

I know the BB's played to some extremely large festival audiences in Europe in the late '90's. I think 1998 or '99 they played to 80,000 plus at a couple of shows, one in Germany was estimated at 120,000. Does anyone have an attendance figure for the Bonnaroo set? Their New Orleans Jazz Fest set on this tour was about 30,000 according to Joe Thomas...this one looks much bigger.

There's something like 80k attendees for this year's fest claimed. Looks like a fucking lot of them are out there.

It truly was an amazing show. Every single person in the crowd that I saw, young and old, sober and wasted, thoroughly enjoyed themselves. Easily the highlight of my Bonnaroo experience.

I'm not surprised that "Sail on Sailor" went over so well, Brian seemed to really get into the vocal on that one.  I sure as hell loved it!

Pitchforks write-up from it's festival coverage.

Quote
It was another reclusive-genius type who provided the weekend with its biggest surprise. The Beach Boys' Sunday afternoon set had all the trappings of sad-making state fair fodder: there's another band serving as a safety net behind the remaining five Boys, and villain/hero Mike Love still has the slight scent of used car salesman on him. The tempos have slowed some, the harmonies certainly don't pop like they used to, and 20 seconds into "Do It Again", it wasn't clear if everybody knew they'd gotten started. A few songs in, though, things got good, and kept getting better.
The cars-and-surfboards songs are all but etched into America's DNA at this point, but no amount of boomer-ish mistiness for some imagined past can dull those melodies. And Mike Love pays just enough lip service to Brian Wilson that you almost forgive him for all those lousy years when John Stamos had him convinced he was Jimmy Buffett. Al Jardine's voice is spot-on, David Marks got off a couple truly ripping solos, and Bruce Johnston's clearly having a ball. Wilson, behind the piano through most of the set, isn't singing much, and when he does, it's a little shaky; he's got both a teleprompter and a guy to help finish his lines when he can't hit the notes. But when he takes the baton-- on "Heroes and Villains", a mini Pet Sounds-suite, and a knockout performance of "Sail On, Sailor"-- that cheaply nostalgic "'member when" feeling all but melts away. The songs from the new That's Why God Made the Radio are awfully schlocky and over-arranged, and nobody really needs to hear "Surfin' USA" and "Surfin' Safari" in a half-hour span. But they sounded better than any band who survived both Uncle Jesse and "Kokomo" ought to, and they absolutely nailed "Wouldn't It Be Nice". That's a good one to nail.

Absolutely enormous. After the Boys were done, most people stayed put for Bon Iver, who played at 5:30. It took me at least 25 minutes to get way over to the side so I could find a spot to sit in the grass...it was very stressful, haha! People really pack together at these shows.

Sounds like a nightmare

This is my favorite pic of Mike Love ever, from Bonnaroo

I saw a pic of just Al and Bruce at a press thing after the show.  Where were Mike and Brian?  Too busy with all those young ladies throwing themselves at them?  Between that gal with Mike and those girls on the bus with Brian, you know their egos were getting really inflated.

This person has uploaded a whole bunch of stuff..full songs..mostly from the second half of the set...great quality, it's like you're there.  Check it out!

Honestly, this is like some of Mike's most inspired performances I've seen in a while.  A few scenes reminded me of Knebworth 1980--I'm not sur if that's good but Mike shed like 30 years in this performance.  Very cool to watch.

He's also done a lot worse. And not everyone has been following this tour, natch. The Beach Boys dropping that song in a major festival set is still a big deal to the casual fan.

Also, in this video of Good Vibrations, Brian clearly isn't feeling it - Jeff keeps pointing to him to sing the second verse, and Brian just, well, ain't. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eXVNsTr9QPY&feature=relmfu (before 'Jeff is Satan', I'm sure he's very much aware no-one wants to hear him sing GV - they want Brian)

Kinda worried about Wembley in this event - the bigger the crowd, the more Brian gets freaked out and so things like this are more likely. Whilst Wembley is going to kick my ass into next week, kinda wish they did the RFH or something instead.

Throw in the archive releases, which I hope get the same treatment as the Beatles catalog...
I would not expect this: The Beach Boys have Mark Linett on their payroll and he's not in the same league as the Abbey Road engineers who worked on The Beatles stuff!

And sadly, Beatles releases--Anthologies aside--have generally never had the bonus unreleased tracks like we've gotten on the two-fers and the 30th box set.

Capitol needs to get their BB and Fab teams together for a powwow, methinks.
