Questlove (The Roots are Fallons house band, of course) is going a bit mental on Twitter about tonight.

Questo of The Roots ‏ @questlove
Man. I've been waiting FOREVER for The OG Beach Boys to reunite & Pet Sounds up @LateNightJimmy. Tonight I get my wish. Its the Illest lp!

If The Roots were backing The Beach Boys tonight I might die.  LOL

Fun fact - my 6th grade teacher was Questlove's sister Smiley

That's cool! Are you in the Philly area too?

And remember he was Tweeting about the Smile Sessions box a few months ago, I posted some of those messages in a thread here, somewhere. Obviously he's a big fan - this adds a neat subtext to the appearance tonight. We have to consider how many people who would not normally be buying a Smile Sessions box set went out and bought it after hearing Questlove praise it as a goldmine of samples. Who knows how many producers, DJ's, or beatmakers took that advice and are currently creating a new classic in their studio based on a Beach Boys/Smile sample?

You're in for a treat!

They *nailed* every detail of The Doors on Ed Sullivan, right down to the flowers atop Ray's keyboard setup.

"Reading Rainbow" is one of the best and most dead-on musical satires-impressions I have ever seen. Smiley

Watching it now - only 30 seconds in and already he said HIGH!!!

Holy crap this is genius...

which means he'd be disappointed and not enthusiastic if they weren't playing something from Pet Sounds.

what do you mean, be the case? he already posted. they already rehearsed. he specifically mentioned Pet Sounds. I'm not saying it's definitive, but I'd imagine Questlove knows a little more than we do about this.

If they'll play Pet Sounds material I'd be happy. But still they also oughta do TWGMTR

Fallon likes to make a big fuss over any band coming through of "legendary status"...they'll no doubt play TWGMTR after the short interview and then probably come back at the end of the show and do an oldie (a Pet Sounds cut, as we're led to believe) as the credits roll.

Btw, it's not really shorts weather here in NYC. He's clearly doing it for us Smiley Smilers.

That box set praise was neat but not unexpected because he had been talking PS - I posted this on the same topic but i still can't remember where this first came up on this board to find the Tweets! I guess if someone can wade through thousands of his posts, they'll be archived on his Twitter, if anyone is interested.  Smiley

I have to mention something that *may* be a possibility judging from earlier Fallon shows.

The band rehearses in the afternoon as shown in that Facebook photo. I don't know how often this happened, but once in particular they actually made the rehearsal footage available. Ice Cube was sitting in with The Roots that night, and as a warm-up/fun thing to play, they busted out NWA's "Straight Outta Compton". Roots guitarist Captain Kirk *nailed* the Easy E vocal, and the whole performance was electric. Someone shot a video on their phone (if I remember), Questlove Tweeted a link to the video, it went viral, and eventually they got so many requests that Fallon aired the rehearsal video on his show.

So if...just *if*...they bust out a Pet Sounds or Smile cut off-air, which would be absolutely cool as anything - it could still reach the fans, no matter what they actually do on the show.

Fallon, unlike some other hosts, is a true musician and a music fan who is respectful and knowledgeable about the artists he hosts on his show. I trust there may be a bit more to this than the usual stock appearance where they do one tune and split.

At least I hope there will be more... Cheesy

In that rehersal photo, the BB are right there, front and center; I hope they do an intimate version of TWG, with clearly attributable parts, with camera time for each major part and with the backup band doing only the wordless humm at various ranges.  I don't want any risky falsettos from anyone. This is the way/chance to make this song a hit.

Oh boy. . . . .12 hours away, but I suppose NY will see it 3 hours before.

I am staying off this discussion until I see it for myself at my time.

Maybe Questlove had the good sense to turn off Brian's autotune.

I'm only tuning in if they perform Cabinessence featuring Hologram Carl.

 LOL

...and why not hologram Murry too, behind a faux mixing desk?

Definitely. Complete with a reenactment of the AAF scene where Brian tells Murry the board's fake and fires him.

This is so cool..

Questlove is obviously a huge BB's fan, not just Pet Sound, he was raving about SMiLE when it was released

Fallon is a huge fan too, he was at one of the Brian tribute shows, you can see him in the audience after Surf's up
