• Discussing anything other than the downside of drug use does not constitute being pro-drugs
• Drug use is not the same as addiction
• SMiLE was written by someone who'd taken LSD, so what would have been written otherwise is impossible to know and irrelevant
• Much of this thread is now noise (including, frankly, this)

I would assume that, if somebody already has some psychological issues (already a nervous breakdown at such a young age), and they do a lot of any type of drug-like hash, pot, uppers-it's going to affect them quite a bit. Brian was already going to have some of the problems that he ended up having. The drugs were just the icing on the cake, so to speak.

All roads lead to Kokomo. Exhaustive research in time travel has conclusively proven that there is no alternate universe WITHOUT Kokomo. It would've happened regardless.

Agreed. Though I wonder, if Al hadn't spilled the beans prematurely, would Capitol have even announced the project by this point?

I was thinking today, while re-discovering the joyous perfection of Pet Sounds, how amazing it would be if we were back in time. Imagine that Pet Sounds was a recent release and that nothing from Smile had been heard before, all we had was Good Vibrations and a promise from Dennis that this next album would make Pet Sounds stink. And then imagine having Smile come out, the euphoria of hearing all this new music! Today, we are all salivating even though most of us have heard much of Smile in bits and pieces over several decades. Imagine getting blasted by this music all at once for the very first time...

Post of the week!
Three weeks without any real news, so the natives are getting restless. We need some scrap, morsel... anything. Heck, even a minor interview with some bit player in all the Smile box drama would give us something more interesting to talk about.

This reminds me of two questions I have:
1. Are there any other audio-interviews out there, with one of the guys talking about Smile and/or SmileySmile from that era?
2. I remember a quote by Dennis saying that he was in the jungle listening to SmileySmile and it sounded great. What did he mean? What jungle?

I find it amusing that Brian told the interviewer that he's glad he (interviewer) liked the album...but I think the interviewer only used the words "different" and "interesting"...not necessarily a positive review...

Sure, if you want to take it negatively, you will. Sounded to me like Jack liked what he heard and that's why he said it was interesting.
Or maybe that's just what the copy said for Jack to say, as printed out by the Capitol promo people.

I always found this interview to be a little strange. It's as if the interviewer was trying to make certain things about the album out to be more profound than they actually were. "It was just an accident and it worked out, so we kept it in", Brian answers (I'm paraphrasing here).
It reminds me of an old Benny Hill skit where Benny is a French movie director being interviewed about his latest release. The interviewer asks him questions like, "What was the meaning behind those poignant black and white scenes?" Benny answers something like, "We ran out of color film!"

I have great saying about this!!! "Everyone is entitled to an opinion, some opinion's are more educated than others. And based on the subject we are discussing and your knowledge and education on said subject I respect do/do not respect your opinion". basically you just select "do" or "do not". So 99% of what AGD says I "do" and 99% of what Fishmonk says I "do not"!!!

I'm glad that I now have a rival here. Also I don't believe AGD can peer into alternate universes and say with certainty what would or would not have happened, so I'm going to chalk up what he said as opinion. Can we please stop this stupid fact vs. opinion thing. When we're talking about purely speculative matters, like I dunno, what would have happened if history changed, just assume that I'm not trying to assert facts.

Or( just perhaps) there was a Capitol timeline in place, that was slightly marred by Al's impromptu statement....

Dear boy, you have this odd inability to comprehend English sometimes. So, again. Slowly.
Someone asked a question about the Capitol timeline for announcing
The Smile Sessions
being affected by Alan's little slip. I gave an answer: not an opinion, an answer. Here's an example:
"Though I wonder, if Al hadn't spilled the beans prematurely, would Capitol have even announced the project by this point?"
1. "Well, I guess maybe they might have brought it forward a bit, but who knows ?" - opinion.
2. "Yes" - answer.
All Alan did was give the Capitol execs a weekend's worth of exercise doing the headless chicken dance before they sorted the situation and carried on with the gameplan they already had in place. This is not speculation on my part.

Somebody's fussy. So you have access to an official timetable that was devised before Al's statement?
Even if you do, it's still impossible for you to say how things might have played out one differently. Can you say with absolute certainty? No. What if that interview had ended a question sooner and Al hung up the phone a few seconds earlier, what if that shifted his whole schedule that day a few seconds and what if he crossed the street and got hit by a car that would have otherwise passed him by, and what if as a result Capital shelved the project?
Improbable? Certainly. The point is I don't believe you're more qualified to look into alternate universes than anybody else so you should really amend your statement.
